yah i feel that there was stuff in the avengers that just made me go :L :L but the god lines didn't so I was wondering if people had an actual characterization issue or was just anti-religous superheroes or smth.
✹ circus themed! (JUST BECAUSE)
the circus in winter by cathy day (the ending was a bit lacklustre and the whole book turned out to be autobiographical/about her own family, which made it lose some of its magic to me, but it's still really interesting! the stories about all the performers and the early beginnings of the wallace porter circus are amazing)
the night circus (idec man, i liked it a lot)
not sure if i want to rec water for elephants (girl did her research, so much information about the early days of the american circus!) or the first couple of darren shan books (i ate those up when i was six or seven and i still liked them when i reread a few of them a couple of years back. evra was my baby)
oh man, this is hard. obviously there's the stars and stripes forever, which would be played as a mayday call when something bad was happening.

the obvious answer would be water for elephants, which I actually did like a lot. there's also a 1932 horror film called freaks about side-show performers (where the cast is mainly made up out of real side-show performers instead of costumed actors!!!) which i've been meaning to check out. also, not a film but just a brilliant brilliant brilliant show: carnivale. do yourself a favour and watch carnivale.
