This is a defensive maneuver - lock everything in place & be ready to pinch someone with your mandibles. This beetle is commonly called a big-headed ground beetle but its scientific name is scarites subterraneus which sounds way more badass: 

We picked up some new half barrels to replace our two oldest ones. Fun fact: When the insides of the barrels get wet & the sun warms them, you can smell the whiskey: 

Old one number one. For those who might be wondering, these barrels last about three seasons here in the Mid-South but they may last a little longer somewhere with less heat & humidity:
