Happy Birthday @wolfiejimi. Wrote you a little something :)
...
Bunny sat at the breakfast table, stirring his coffee continuously, in a daze and not reacting to anything around him. Suddenly Raffles appeared behind him where he leaned down and hovered by Bunny’s ear.
“Careful, you’ll make a hole in the bottom of that cup.” He grinned and sat down opposite him. “Why so glum?”
“It’s my birthday, A.J.”
“Is it by Jove?” Raffles took a deep dramatic breath. “I wondered what that piece of card was with letters on it that said ‘Many Happy Returns’.”
“Don’t jest, A.J. I’m another year older!”
“As are we all and I might add I have no sympathy when I’m a good few years older than you are and I don’t look half so young either.”
Bunny sighed. “Be that as it may, don’t you ever feel blue when your birthday comes around again?”
“Of course, Bunny, but shouldn’t you be happy it has? And besides, I’m going to spoil you rotten today. I’ve made you coffee, I’m taking you to an excellent supper later. What else would you like?”
“To be a year younger.”
“Ah so you wish to age in reverse? Sorry, haven’t quite mastered that skill just yet, Bunny.”
Bunny let out a little giggle. “I’m sorry, I’m being silly. I’m grateful you’re here and spoiling me. So you don’t think I have aged then?”
Raffles rolled his eyes upwards and grabbed a pocket mirror, thrusting it into Bunny’s hands. “Look at that. Not a line on your face, my dear fellow. There’s not a single grey hair or mark of age. You are still like an angel and innocence itself. A cherub in a finest painting.” He smirked. “Besides you shall be of no use to me once those innocent looks fade.”
“A.J! What a thing to say to a chap on his birthday!”
“Don’t take it so seriously, my Rabbit. This is a celebration of your life, not a day of mourning of a year passed. This is the day Harry Manders came into existence. This is the most important day of the year.”
“You really think so?”
“A world where you were never born doesn’t bear thinking about.”
Bunny smiled shyly. “In that case, I’d love a bit of bacon and eggs.”
“It’s your birthday, Bunny, not your coronation, don’t push your luck.”
Bunny’s finger caressed the handle of his coffee cup as he coyly waited for Raffles to get up and surprise him with a gift. “So, anything else happening today?”
Raffles glanced at the newspaper. “Yes, did you know Lord Helmsworth’s house went up in flames last night? We were only there two days ago.”
Bunny nearly choked on his coffee. “Good god! I hope we had nothing to do with it.”
“Yes, of course, Bunny, we set the fuse and lit it to go off a full twenty-four hours later.”
“There’s no need to be facetious. What a bad stroke of luck. But anything else happening today, any good things?”
“Hmm?” He glanced from his paper. “Good things? Such as?”
Suddenly, without warning, Bunny’s fist made contact with the table. “Have you got me a present or not?”
“My, you are an impatient little cuss, perhaps I shan’t give you a gift at all now.”
“Oh, I’m sorry, A.J, it’s just I saw you ordering something the other day and I’ve been eager to know what it is since.” Bunny nuzzled his head under Raffles’ chin. “Well? May I know?”
“Well, seeing as you’ll apparently explode if I don’t, I suppose I have no choice or we’ll both go up in flames like poor Helmsworth’s place.”
He reached into the bureau and pulled out a wrapped box. Bunny opened it excitedly. “A leather-bound journal, thank you, A.J, it’s wonderful.”
“It’s the first of many gifts, Bunny, but if you want your others then you have to be a good birthday Bunny.”
“I’ll be your obedient Bunny slave.” Bunny lifted his hands into a Bunny pose.
“Happy Birthday you silly Rabbit.” He planted a kiss on his cheek. “And to many more Bunny birthdays.”
