i’m a little more doubtful of it honestly

from what i’ve read about it what i’m seeing is another series about an autistic person that falls into the genius autistic stereotype and it’s only because of that that the allistic characters in the story even consider him for the position

this is troubling because although savant syndrome is fairly common (seen in as many as 1 / 10 autistic people and in other people with developmental disorders) it paints the picture of you can only keep a job / get a major position if you’re some kinda super genius and that’s just not the reality for so many autistic people

savant syndrome is absolutely amazing (have you heard of kim peek? he was the inspiration for the movie the rain man; i haven’t seen the movie but his actual life and ability was amazing and i’d recommend reading about it) but there’s the issue that nearly every autistic character on tv is depicted to have savant syndrome and while that would be fine if there was an equal number of depictions of autistic people without savant syndrome there... just isn’t

the creator behind the good doctor has said that his character does not mean to represent all autistic people and while that’s objectively true, the autistic characters we do get do become representations of us.

allistics already have a black and white opinion of us (think “high functioning” + savant syndrome vs “low functioning” + needs daily support) where “gifted autistic people” are the preferred and the good doctor only feeds into those bigoted stereotypes and views 

this doesn’t get into the fact that again, like atypical, the actor playing the main character is allistic and so is the creator. i’m unsure if there are any autistic crewmembers or actors in the show since the pilot is set to come out next month but this is disheartening at best and repulsive at worst
