"Keep your eyes on me, Val," he had shouted out from the tower he stood on. It was a trick, he said; he had been practicing, he said. Even when she had outed her possible worry, he had waved it off dismissively, and she trusted his confidence as he stood on the rooftop's edge, dressed only in a pair of sweatpants. She stood, many feet below him, arms crossed as she watched him teeter along the edge, her worries cast aside.

Until she saw him falling. A panic set in when he initially fell. It wasn't intentional; he had lost his footing and whatever trick he had planned did not seem to be turning out as planned. He was falling too fast, and she was frozen. Don't worry, Val, I've practiced this a million times. Lyle. I'll be fine, don't worry. Lyle. Don't worry.

"Lyle!" 

How she was in the air, and so suddenly at that, she was unsure, but he wasn't falling. He was in her arms, safe, and never had she felt such relief. Never had she been so grateful to see that cheeky smile. "Looks like you do care about me," he attempted to joke once their feet had met the ground once again. She released him, steadying herself, and only then did she notice the quick pace of her heartbeat, which quickened even more when he turned around to face her. 

Tossing her arms around his neck, she pulled him close to her, hugging him tightly. "You're right, I do care about you--I... I love you, Lyle." Because in that moment she had seen him fall, the thought of him not being with her was more unbearable than she could have ever thought. Wordlessly, he moved his arms around her, resting his chin on his shoulder as he held her. "I lov..." He soon stopped, blinking.

"Since when did you get wings?"
