Part 1: Denial
Quinn was doing pretty well. Spectacularly well, actually, for someone who had just lost her mate for an indefinite amount of time. She hated having lost him to everything she had been trying to avoid; Expectations, distance, being different, authority. She had never hated something so much in her life. Desperately, she tried to remember what her life was like before Sam. She couldn't. Her life had begun that night on the church balcony, with clouds swelling and thunder rumbling, Puck watching them in the distance, watching them as she let him kiss her. Quinn had her running shoes on once more, remembering how it was what she did when she tried to push thoughts out of her head. She had run and avoided and pretended, had become a pro at it, and she could do it now.
So she ran, ran fast enough that if someone had been watching her long enough, they'd know that she was no mere human. She ran hard enough, fast enough to where her lungs could explode, to where her thoughts could dissolve into nothing. To where her head only echoed with the thumping of her heart, the pumping of her blood and the air struggling to climb into her chest. Finally, at some point, she had found her way home, her body spent. As soon as she hit her bedroom doorway, her mother was there with her wide curious eyes, wanting to know where Quinn had been, why she had been gone long, how she was feeling, what she was thinking. Quinn answered like she had learned to over the years, trying to mask just how much she was forcing down. "Quinn, sweetie, you're so distant lately. And I know you've been spending a lot of your time away, but you seem like you've changed." Her mother's voice cut into her fog of thoughts as Quinn was in the bathroom, starting the shower, feeling the hot water begin to thaw her out. A lump formed in her throat and she bit her lip hard, shaking her head even though her mother couldn't see her. "I'm the same, Mom." She called out. "Nothing's changed."
