the to-go coffee cup is held frozen at her lips, the sprinkling of pumpkin spice on her tongue held tight as the gaze held on the entrance to diagon alley is abandone and slowly moved to up the stairs where she finds luca. for the past week or so, moira has come through the leaky cauldron at the exact same time every day with a specific coffee cup in hand - the particular scent all too familiar in the autumnal season - and it seems luca has taken notice. swallowing the liquid in her mouth, moira lowers the cup and looks to her old friend with a sheepish smile - she can't lie for pennys, but she will try. "pumpkin spice? you're funny, luca!" swallowing, a nervous chuckle falls from her lips, "why would you think that?" because you're addicted.

＂  better  the  devil  you  know,  i  suppose.  or  whatever  it  is  people  say.  ＂  the  twitch  of  her  lip  manages  to  be  both  amused  and  resigned,  all  at  once.  squalor  is  something  they  both  understand,  but  then,  that’s  not  a  new  revelation.  luca  might  just  be  the  one  person  andie  knows  she  never  really  has  to  pretend  around.  it’s  easy  enough  to  fall  into  bad  habits;  fake  a  smile,  force  a  laugh.  lie  through  her  teeth  whenever  someone  asks  how  things  are.  at  least  she  doesn’t  have  to  do  that  here.  she’d  even  go  so  far  as  to  call  the  other  a  friend,  which  didn’t  happen  often.  young  mom  has  never  been  good  at  grasping  onto  such  things.  hands  place  down  the  empty  plates  collected  off  abandoned  tables  on  her  way  from  entrance  to  bar,  the  service  worker  within  unable  to  stop  herself  from  helping  even  if  it  isn’t  her  place  to.  ＂  you  want  me  to  carry  these  through  to  the  kitchens?  i’ve  got  some  time  to  kill  before  my  shift  starts  at  the  wyvern.  ＂  might  as  well  make  herself  useful.  she  finds  it  helps  these  days.  busy  schedule  is  the  only  thing  that  distracts  a  worrying  mind  from  marco’s  absence  whenever  he  isn’t  close.  

"    i’m  sorry,  darling    …    are  the  bars  i  spend  my  time  in  not  quite  matching  up  to  standards?    "    the  question  is  no  more  than  a  rhetorical  tease;    delivered  with  the  right  amount  of  soft  sarcasm  to  make  that  clear,  though  ezekiel  still  takes  a  pause.  prepares  himself  even,  because  he  knows  luca  well  enough  now    (  or  at  least,  they’ve  spent  a  fair  amount  of  time  together    &    that  experience  provides  a  small  advantage  )    to  know  there’s  bound  to  be  some  little  quip  waiting  on  the  tip  of  her  tongue  in  response.  brawny  frame  lowers,  casually  leaning  body  weight  against  arms  as  they  settle  on  counter  top.  the  position  allows  him  to  dip  closer  to  her  height  with  a  sigh  of  faux  exasperation.    "    it  isn’t  that  bad.    "    oh,  it  is.  the  dark,  dank  dive  bar  she’s  joined  zeke  in  leaves  much  to  be  desired.  the  kind  that  created  an  automatic  unease  upon  entrance  for  most  people,  but  it’s  exactly  the  surroundings  a  man  like  him  feels  most  at  home  in.  it  also  remained  one  of  the  few  establishments  that  still  allowed  him  entrance,  fighting  less  frowned  upon.    ⸻    if  anything,  the  greedy  hands  of  regulars  encourage  the  odd  splash  of  violence.  any  excuse  to  seize  an  opportunity  and  place  cheap  bets.    "    did  you  have  somewhere  better  in  mind?    "    this  time,  he  dares  to  sound  curious  and  the  glint  in  his  eye  when  he  leans  forward  just  slight  edges  more  towards  outright  suggestive.  thumb  taps  thoughtfully  against  worn  -  out  wood  that’s  seen  better  days  once,  twice,  three  times  before  quietly  adding  on:    "    your  place  maybe?    "

＂    not  the  first  time  i’ve  got  that  reaction.    ＂      though  arguably,  previous  times  have  been  for  reasons  vastly  different  than  the  simple  fact  he  didn’t  knock  loud  enough  for  arrival  to  be  anticipated,  knuckles  barely  grazing  the  door  he’s  now  casually  leaning  large  build  against.  for  a  moment,  that’s  all  the  response  she  gets.  ezekiel  has  never  been  a  man  of  many  words,  not  even  in  the  presence  of  someone  he’s  grown  relatively  comfortable  around.  they’ve  usually  found  far  more  effective  ways  to  break  the  silence  after  all,  but  this  is  a  social  visit  as  opposed  to  anything  more,  made  clear  when  hand  lifts  to  reveal  a  single  hoop  earring  dangling  from  forefinger.      ＂    this  was  left  in  the  hotel  room.    ＂      head  tilts  to  one  side,  hint  of  smirk      (    amusement  brought  on  in  response  to  initial  reaction    )      still  visible  as  he  tosses  the  jewellery  in  luca’s  direction,  hopeful  she’ll  catch.      ＂    i  was  passing  through.  figured  you  might  want  it  back.    ＂      the  age  old  i  was  in  the  neighbourhood  reasoning  works  well  when  her  apartment  is  just  above  place  of  work.      ＂    …    unless  it’s  not  yours  and  someone  else  left  it  there.  in  which  case,  consider  it  a  late  christmas  present.  you’re  welcome.    ＂

"    we  have  met  before,  right?    "      it’s  delivered  as  a  joke,  though  the  strained  smile  that  follows  doesn’t  reach  her  eyes.  doesn’t  last  long  either,  disappearing  almost  as  quickly  as  it  arrived.  andie  had  always  been  a  sensitive  soul;    broken  bird,  taking  everything  to  heart.  walden  used  to  hate  that  about  her.  sometimes  she  hates  that  about  her  too.  insecurities  have  only  dug  even  deeper  since  becoming  a  parent.  letting  herself  down  was  one  thing,  but  marco?      ⸻      he  depended  on  her.      "    i  don’t  know  what  i  would’ve  done  if  something  had  happened  to  him.    "      hands  nervously  smooth  out  st  mungo’s  blanket  covering  her  lap,  easing  away  creases  as  a  brief  distraction.  something  else  to  focus  on  other  than  the  self  -  doubt  and  mild  pain  emitting  from  injury.  it  doesn’t  help.  long  sigh  soon  escapes,  sounding  almost  defeated.      "    i  couldn’t  get  him  out  of  there.  i  couldn’t  protect  him.  i’m  his  mom,  i’m  supposed  to  keep  him  safe.    "      by  any  means  necessary.  bite  exists  as  proof  of  efforts,  but  is  it  enough?  their  future  has  been  changed  forever.      "    i  can’t  shake  this  feeling  that  i  keep  screwing  up.    "

hum  of  agreement  comes  almost  instantly,  eyes  that  are  admittedly  more  envious  than  judgemental  lingering  on  the  extravagant  tent  they’ve  walked  by.      ＂    it’s    …    obscene.    ＂      but  merlrin,  does  a  part  of  her  wish  she  could  see  the  inside;    just  to  catch  a  quick  glimpse  at  how  the  other  half  live.      —      call  it  glutton  for  punishment.  hands  stay  resting  on  marco’s  shoulders,  keeping  him  close  in  front  of  her  to  stop  little  boy  from  running  towards  something  she  absolutely  could  not  afford  to  compensate  if  curious  hands  broke.      ＂    do  you  ever  wonder  what  kinda  problems  rich  people  have?    ＂      it’s  a  whole  other  world  to  her.  the  macnairs  had  never  been  well  -  off  as  much  as  well  -  looked  after.  until  they  weren’t.      ＂    or  do  they  pay  people  to  worry  for  them  too?    ＂

＂    i  let  myself  go  as  much  as  i  need  to.  anything  more  than  that,  and  people  might  get  hurt.    ＂      it’s  all  a  matter  of  discipline,  or  at  least  that’s  what  he  tells  himself    &    other  people.  the  real  truth  is  ezekiel’s  manner  has  become  so  deeply  ingrained  in  him  that  he  doesn’t  know  how  to  be  anything  or  anyone  else.  can’t  teach  an  old  dog  new  tricks.      —      isn’t  that  the  popular  assumption?  actions  speak  louder  than  old  -  fashioned  theories  though  and  there  certainly  seems  to  be  a  softer  approach  in  tonight’s  attitude  as  hands  pull  hotel  room  duvet  up  to  cover  luca  further,  a  hint  of  concern  for  another  person’s  well  -  being  seeping  through  an  otherwise  usually  cold  demeanour.  it  isn’t  the  night  he  envisioned  for  himself,  but  if  anyone  was  going  to  interrupt  plans,  there’s  relief  to  be  found  in  the  fact  it’s  someone  zeke  doesn’t  find  completely  intolerable.      ＂      besides,  you’re  clearly  more  than  capable  of  having  enough  fun  for  the  BOTH  of  us.    ＂      own  body  drops  down  into  nearby  armchair  with  a  hefty  sigh,  reaching  to  untie  boot  laces.      ＂    do  i  even  want  to  know  what  you  did  to  end  up  in  that  tent?    ＂
