i. and if there was a problem / yo, i'll solve it
âCASTELLAN?â YOU APPROACHED him slowly, tone cautious as if you were speaking to a wounded animal, although in this case, maybe you were, as you reached for his bruised knuckles, remaining persistent, even as he tried to withdraw his hands out of your grasp. âwhyâd you do that?â
âdid i need a reason?â there is a forced jocularity to his words, a well-practiced mask he is never seen without, and you cringe slightly, your gaze catching the grimace that twists his lips. his attempt at a âroguishâ grin falls flat, the expression a discordant note against the backdrop of his injuries. lukeâs already busted lip splits open, a thin line of crimson carving a river down his chin. he moves to wipe it off the back of his arm, but youâve already pulled off the bandana tying up your hair (a birthday present from a half-sibling) and begun rubbing at his face.
lukeâs eyes widened at the gesture.
despite being tentative acquaintances since your arrival, youâre still annoyed that luke castellan continues to underestimate just how much of his heart he wears on his sleeve â or rather, just how well you manage to see past his facade. his blatant lie hangs in the air, unacknowledged. instead, you deliberately shift your gaze to the purples and blacks that mar his knuckles, setting about wrapping them with your bandana, obscuring the damage.
âi couldâve done that myself,â luke says, amused, his words lightly appreciative. still, at your answering glare, he tosses his hands in the air in surrender as âice ice babyâ continues in the background, uninterrupted, âbut thank you, though.â
âiâm no apollo kid, but itâll do,â you shrug instead of accepting the gratitude, tugging him to his feet, ensuring to grab his uninjured hand, and hauling him outside.Â
âyouâre no apollo kid, and you decide to take the injured man away from where the apollo kids are actually gathered,â luke muses, once again entertained with himself (was there any other emotion this boy could experience besides amusement?), once the lights of the apollo cabin are so far behind you, neither of you could fully see each other.
âyouâll live,â you say, scowling at him through the darkness, forgetting he couldnât actually see you.
âand youâre moody for a daughter of aphrodite,â he says, still holding onto your hand as he trails after you.
you stop in your tracks, pinch the bridge of your nose, count to three, and finally turn to luke, who still has his stupidly pleased-with-himself expression on his face. âluke castellan, if you donât end up dying of some tragic fate or the other i will hunt you down myself.â
âduly noted.â
âholy hera, do you even want to know where iâm taking you?â
ânah, i think the mystery really adds some suspense.â
âthatâs it, i give up,â you say, before beginning to drag him back to the apollo cabin, when he plants his feet in the dirt ground firmly, grinning crookedly at you as the moonlight finally shines through the clouds, suddenly bathing him in a luminescent glow.
ânah, câmon, letâs go to your spot.â
you glare at him, watching how his stupid grin only seems to grow in size, an annoyingly endearing trait. with a sigh, you continued to drag him along, scowling each time he tried to make a quip.
âwhat if we get to your spot, and i find out this was all just a ploy to murder me?â luke muses out loud, looking thoughtful for once.
âdo you seriously believe that if i was gonna murder you, i wouldnât have done it by now?â you say, pausing when he shrugged in agreement, âweâre here though, whiney baby.âÂ
lukeâs eyebrows rose as he took in the secluded area near the dunes, finally meeting your gaze again. âaw, i canât believe you just planned out our first date.â
âi seriously donât know what any of my half-siblings see in you.â
âso youâve discussed me then.â
âshut up, i dragged you all the way here, because even though i know you like attention, i donât think you wanted the attention you were getting from punching that poor hephaestus kid in the jaw,â you say shockingly sincerely, startling both yourself and luke.
luke doesnât say anything, letting what seems like a confession hang in the air, instead, sits down near the water, and rubs a hand across his jaw, watching you as you follow suit, sitting next to him.Â
after spending what seems like minutes in silence, watching the waves lap at the shore, luke finally speaks, staring out at the horizon, his tone slightly hollow, and devoid of all things you have come to label as luke castellan, looking eerily similar to the night he had returned from his infamous quest, âheroes arenât meant to be happy.â
you drew your legs to your chest, wrapping your arms around them and resting your head. âi know â achilles, orpheus, theseusâŠâ you trail off.
âand hercules,â luke adds, almost melancholy.Â
âi think iâve pretty much accepted iâll die young,â you say, your words coming out in nothing but a whisper despite the two of you being alone.
luke nods in solidarity, lost in thought. âit shouldnât have to be like this,â he finally says, voice hardening.
ii. talking sweet and looking fine / i get kinda hectic inside
âokay, for this technique, iâll need a partner,â luke says, looking straight at you. âcan you come up here?â
deciding to oblige him, you rolled your eyes good-naturedly, smiling as you joined him in front of the other campers, who had begun whispering when he called out to you. in the crowd, just past your half-siblings looks of shock, you can see the stolls passing around a wad of cash.Â
luke addresses the crowd once more, âi need everyone to be paying close attention here, weâll be demonstrating how to parry, or counterblock for the newcomers.â
as both of you get into position, luke smiles, âdonât forget to go easy on me.â
you laughed, âdonât bet on it, castellan.â
your demonstration ends up feeling like eons, as the two of you continue to dance around each other, parrying and jabbing, and lunging, and striking, and parrying. both of you are panting, your faces flushed as you continue, and just when it seems like you have the upper hand, luke side steps, and easily parries your finishing blow, disarming you in the process.
you laugh as you yield, loving the exhilaration from the fight, but when the two of you face the campers once more, more than half of the crowd is slack-jawed.Â
luke, ever the showman, canât resist a grin, ânot only was that your lesson to not underestimate aphrodite cabin, but also to show you the level weâre trying to get you guys to. now, partner up and spread out.â
before you can turn back to address luke again, drew is suddenly at your side.Â
âwhat the fuck was that?â drew hisses, grasping your elbow and leading you away from the training session in full swing, pulling you into your cabin, where silena sits on your bed (still in her armor), clearly awaiting this impromptu confrontation.
âwhat was what?â you choose to feign innocence, examining your nails before glancing up to see the twin expressions of horror on both silena and drewâs faces.Â
âdo not act dumb,â drew eyes you coolly, âitâs so beneath you.â
âiâm not acting dumb,â you rolled your eyes at the both of them.
âyes you ââ
âyou and castellan,â silena interjects, âwe want details, now.â
âwhat details even are there to give?â
silena grabs drewâs arm, pulling her back from apparently nearly pouncing on you.Â
drew rolls her eyes at the hand on her arm, and then focuses on you, âyouâre literally our next head counselor and you and castellan had never so much looked at each other until this week and now heâs asking you to help demonstrate training techniques, like hello?â
silena snapped her fingers in agreement, âcâmon, you canât deny that something didnât happen.â
ânothing did,â you crossed your arms across your chest.
âyou know what,â drew says, âif you wanna be like this fine. come find me when you finally decide to â i donât know â talk to your sisters?â she storms out of the cabin, leaving you alone with silena, who sighs, gives you an apologetic look and goes after drew.Â
âwell, that was a shit show.â
you whirl around to see your head counselor standing at the entry of the cabin, poised as ever, not a hair out of place as she stood, examining her manicure, looking bored, as usual.Â
âcouldnât agree more,â you sigh, sitting on your bed, head in your hands.Â
your head counselor takes a seat beside you, âlook, i donât care for whatever petty drama just unfolded, youâll get over it, daughters of aphrodite and all,â she waves a hand in the air, ââ but for now, we have more pressing issues. iâm gonna leave for college soon, and the entire cabin knows youâre my successor.â
you nod as she paused, meeting your gaze, and you canât help but examine the perfect shape of her eyeliner, scanning her entire picture-perfect face in an attempt to discern her mood.
âi donât care whatever it is you have going on with castellan, but you need to complete the rite of passage, before you become head counselor.â
âthe rite of passage?â you asked, having only heard the phrase in hushed conversations around camp, the knot in your stomach tightening as she continued.
âno child of aphrodite is a true child of aphrodite without having broken their first loveâs heart,â is all she offers as an explanation, completely straight-faced. âcastellan is perfect for your rite of passage.â
your eyebrows furrow as you consider her words, and with a final nod, and gentle squeeze of your arm, she leaves you with both her legacy and your motherâs legacy in your hands.Â
âoh, and before i forget, whoever doesnât do it always ends up cursed.â
iii. now let me pray to keep you from / the perils that will surely come
lukeâs shoulder brushing against yours has turned out to be extremely distracting, and now you can understand why your cabin is more notorious for breaking hearts, rather than falling in love. you canât seem to focus on anything except how close his hand is to yours, even the golden hue of the fire or the sing-alongs canât divert your attention.Â
the distance between the two of you grows imperceptibly smaller when luke suddenly clears his throat, on the verge of saying something, when a twig snaps behind the two of you, causing you to jump apart and look at the intruder.Â
annabeth is standing behind the two of you, looking faintly apologetic, but also terrified. âsorry if i interrupted you guys,â she offers, rubbing her arm.
you share a glance with luke, nodding at him. âyou werenât â luke can always talk to me later,â you say, offering her your trademark smile.
annabeth nodded, âthank you,â as luke gently squeezed your hand before getting up to comfort her.
âdonât thank me, sweetheart.â
youâre at your usual spot when luke rejoins you, running a hand through his curls. âsorry,â he says, âsomeone left a spider in athena cabin, and no one could kill it.â
you chuckled, âif it wasnât a total accident, iâd bet money it was travis and connor.â
the corner of his mouth quirks up at the mention of his siblings, âi think youâre spending too much time around them to pick up on their habits.â
âor maybe, iâm spending too much time around you,â you offer, smirking at him, trying to ignore the funny feeling in your chest as he smiles genuinely at you.
âi like to say iâm an acquired taste,â luke shrugs, sneaking a glance at you as you laugh at him.Â
âi think iâve acquired that taste,â you say, without thinking, before realizing how phenomenally stupid that sounded.
luke smiled widely, âyâknow, if you werenât a daughter of aphrodite, i wouldâve told you how corny that was ââ you shoved him here, ââ ow, let me finish, but i actually am really glad to hear that.â
âno wonder,â you smirked, âi can practically hear your heart beating out of your chest.â
âokay, look whoâs confident all of a sudden.â
you shut him up with a soft kiss that has him seeing stars.Â
iv. i know whatâs weighing on your mind / you can be sure i know my part
âagain, what the hell is going on with you and castellan?â silena asks one early morning before breakfast, birds chirping as sheâs lining her eyes with kajal, glancing at the mirror in her hand as she sits at the top of her bed.
ânothing.â
âi literally saw you guys making out and had to scrub my eyes out with soap,â drew adds, looking extremely disgusted at the thought of relieving that experience, as she paints a fresh coat of nail polish.Â
âfine, youâre right,â you concede, curling your eyelashes.Â
âdonât you have to do the rite of passage, though?â drew asks, pausing to look up at you.
âiâm not doing the rite of passage,â you say slowly, setting the eyelash curler down on the vanity.
âexcuse me?â your head counselor has her hands on her hips, the annoyed expression on her face marring her perfect features, towering over you as she stands in front of your bed.
âi said, iâm not doing the rite of passage,â you enunciate, looking up at her, maintaining eye contact.
the temperature of the cabin seemed to drop ten degrees, and for a minute or so, your stare remained unbroken until she shrugged. âyour decision... but donât say i didnât warn you,â before dramatically whirling around and heading to the pavilion.
silena gave you a look as drew arched her brow, and you simply shrugged in response.

It's four am. Y/N walked outside of her shared house, shivering as the cool wind hit her. A light drizzle came down off the porch's roof, and the sound of a few early morning birds chirped about. Y/N gently closed the front door and saw her wife, Julien, sitting down and smoking a cigarette.
"Oh, hey," She exhaled, looking up at Y/N through the thick cloud of smoke. Her big, brown eyes glistening in the moonlight. "Whatcha doin' up?"
Y/N sleepily shook her head. "Couldn't sleep." She sat down beside Julien with a shiver, "God, it's cold out here."
Hearing what she said, Julien quickly took off her coat and tossed it onto her wife with a smirk. "Better?"
"Yeah," Y/N nodded, leaning onto Julien's shoulder. She sighed, watching the air leave her lips due to how cold it was. Nothing was more crisp and cool than December air.
Julien took another puff, then wrapped her arm around Y/N's shoulder. Y/N took her hand, playing with the abundance of rings that Julien always wore. They had almost always been on her fingers, during tours, rehearsals, every smoke break. Y/N loved playing with them. Julien leaned closer to plant a gentle kiss on her head, inhaling Y/N's coconut shampoo.
"So perfect," Julien whispered, closing her eyes. Her breath tickled against Y/N's neck as she rubbed soft circles against her upper back. Both of their breathing in sync.
"C'mon, lets head inside." Julien sighed, her voice filled with warmth.
Y/N sighed as she was about to get up, when suddenly Julien grasped onto her waist and threw her over shoulder. Y/N's eyes flutter in surprise, letting out a squeal.
âJules!â Y/N wiggled in her grasp, "Let me down!"
âNot a chance, princess.â She replied cheerfully, a huge grin on her face.
She carried her inside the house as Y/N kicked her feet trying to get away. Julien span her around in the hallway until they both ended up getting dizzy, and finally plopped Y/N down on the bed. As they both struggled to catch their breath from laughing so hard, she plopped down on the bed next to her, giggling.
Y/N brushed a strand of hair out of Julien's face and sighed, âYouâre so cute, even when youâre trying to kill me.â

contains: percy jackson x daughter of minor god! reader. post tlo (alt universe - everyone lives). book percy descriptions. apollo (derogatory).

SUMMER BURNS. at camp half-blood, the scorching heat has dwindled to soft caresses, from the heat of the fire during sing-alongs where your cabin joins hands and toasts marshmallows to the cool breeze balming the sunâs glare at its zenith in the sprawling strawberry fields. at home, the scorching heat leaves marks â the biker with flames for pupils who clutched an openly bleeding wound as he thrust a first-aid kit at you, and the girl not much older than yourself with tears marring her face as she handed you a pregnancy test to ring up, avoiding your curious (sympathetic) gaze.
however, despite it all â you stand infallible, much like your grandfatherâs part convenience store and part pharmacy, a poor manâs family heirloom.
you stand idly, flipping through an edition of seventeen when the rusty door swings open to admit a familiar face â with unruly black hair and an equally reckless grin (you know exactly who it is from the ba-dum of your heartbeat), the infamous son of poseidon (with the same smile as shawn hunter from boy meets world) is easily recognizable.
you glance at the crimson blooming around the crevices of his knuckles, tightly gripping a faded and worn-out skateboard, his scruffy converse squeaking across the tiled floor, raising an eyebrow as you coolly say, âband-aids are in the back, on the right.â
jackson laughs, an all-consuming sound (the wind-blown half-blood hill where apollo seemed to smile down at you, the laughter, like the memory, evanescent), âthanks, doc.â
you discreetly watch him perusing the aisles, before stopping in front of the ancient fridge â your grandfatherâs store was something of an 80s pompeii with the peeling posters of back to the future and motley crue and the antiquated maroon and cream color scheme â and pulling out an arizona green tea.
when he finally goes to look for band-aids, you attempt to fix your attention back on the magazine in your hands, but like a moth driven to a flame, percy jackson was unbelievably hard to look away from (a magnet among mortals and immortals alike).Â
jacksonâs hands are on his hips, his tupac t-shirt creasing, thick brows furrowed as he decides between different types of candy with the same intensity as a single mother with two children and a nine-to-five (even in the mortal world, there is something else entirely about him, something that made it so that you could never truly write him off).
when he approaches the register again, itâs hard not to look up and watch his ascent. when he finally does come to a stop in front of you, he looks the same as he did the last summer, though the tiny silver trident earring is new, the camp beads resting peacefully atop his collarbones arenât.
you ring up his items: a box of band-aids, the arizona green tea, and a pack of blue gummy sharks, looking away from him all the while.
âgood to see ya, doc,â jackson says, a wry grin on his face, and his eyes are so green â as green as they were at twelve.
âitâs never good to see you, jackson,â you snark back, reciting his total, âfour ninety-five, by the way.â
he laughs again (your heart goes ba-dum again), and hands you a five dollar bill, shoving his things into the seemingly bottomless pockets of his baggy jeans, with a salute on his way out (his turning back was a sight far more innocuous than the last time).
the next time jackson breaks whatever tacit agreement lies between the two of you, your hands are similarly stained. reds and purples line your palms, much like the burgundy seemingly permanently staining your grandmotherâs fingertips; the culprit (the bowl of pomegranate seeds) sits innocently beside you.Â
âback again?â you say, glancing at the familiar scarlet stains adorning jacksonâs hands (a familiar blue friendship bracelet sits on his wrist, edges frayed with five years of wear, and thereâs a lump in your throat).Â
âwhy, did you miss me?â jackson asks, again with that wry grin of his, skateboard in hand.Â
âyouâre the one who came back,â you say, crossing your arms across your chest, willing the constricting feeling to disappear.
âdoc, iâm sorry to have to be the one that has to break this to you,â he sighs sympathetically, putting a bleeding hand over his heart, âbut the sun doesnât revolve around you.â
âactually, jackson, the sun kind of does revolve around me, âcause yâknow apollo, the sun god apollo? my grandpa apollo? my grandpa, the sun god, apollo?âÂ
âgoing by your logic, that would mean time revolves around me, âcause yâknow kronos, the time titan kronos? my grandpa kronos? my grandpa, the time titan, kronos?â jackson says, a shit-eating grin on his face as he sets down another band-aid box, an arizona green tea, and a pack of blue gummy sharks on the counter.
âyâknow, if you cared this much, you mightâve passed greek,â you say, referring to the progress report cards you were handed at the end of summer.
he shrugged, handing you another five dollar bill, and proceeding to shove everything into his black holes of jean pockets, âyeah, well â wait, are those pomegranates?â
âyeah,â you say, âi peeled them myself â do you want some?âÂ
(your father liked these, your grandmother had said earlier this afternoon, your mother liked to peel them for him, as i peeled them for her, and your grandfather.)
jackson suddenly looked bashful, fidgeting with the hem of his a tribe called quest t-shirt, âiâve never had pomegranates before,â he confessed.
you blinked, taken aback, âyouâre seventeen years old and youâve never eaten a pomegranate before?â you pushed the china bowl toward him, ânow you have to eat it.â
âmy mom liked telling me the myths when i was younger,â he begins, setting down his skateboard, and reaching for the spoon before halting, like he was shocked, âshe told me about persephone ââ
âjackson,â you say, sardonically, leaning over the register to look him in the eye (there was always a storm brewing in his eyes), âi promise you, hades wonât come out of the ground and drag you to the underworld if you eat the pomegranate seeds i peeled.â
âi know what my next sleep paralysis demon is gonna be â thanks to you,â jackson says, looking down at the bowl and its floral blue pattern around the edges, playing with the spoon, and shifting the seeds from side to side.
âpercy jackson, i swear to asclepius, youâre missing out on pomegranates,â you say, coming out from behind the register, and looking percy in the eye again, and there is something so earnest, so raw about your next sentence that his breath catches, âand, i swear on the styx, if hades does somehow come out of the ground to drag you down to the underworld, iâll come down myself to drag you out, even if itâs tartarus.â
a rumble of thunder can be heard overhead despite the clear sky and scalding sun; percy blinks, before breaking out into a slow grin (your stomach seems to grow wings of its own, on the verge of flight.)
âinvoking your dad, huh, doc? these pomegranates must be serious,â percy says, finally taking a bite â stepping around the bomb you just dropped.
you watch him intently, studying him as you studied tennyson and homer, âthey are that serious.â there is something innocent about the way he eats, starved like every other teenage boy with black holes for stomachs.Â
âyâknow, i can put that into a tupperware container and you can take it with you, right?â you offer.Â
âreally?â percy asks through a mouthful of seeds, looking up from the bowl at you, âwonât you think iâll steal it or something?â
ânot really,â you shrugged, âi trust ms. jackson.â
percy nods solemnly â sally jackson is sally jackson after all, a queen among women, and an achilles of sorts, with her soft smile and steely eyes.Â
steeling your nerves, this is already the longest conversation youâve had (ignoring the forever-ago late-night debriefs under a firmament of stars), you step up to the plate and take a swing, âhow is she, by the way, havenât seen her in a while.â
percy swallowed, eyebrows furrowing, âgreat â oh, wait, did i tell you she was seeing someone new now?â
âno way, really? good for her, honestly. i know, poseidonâs a god and all, but like, sheâs always deserved just, so much more.â (you manage to make contact with the change-up thrown your way.)
there is something so sincere about your words, that percy canât help but grin back, finally reaching the depths of his sea-green eyes, and there is something still so boyish about him, that you can hardly believe any time has passed at all, and that somewhere within this demigod who successfully defeated kronos, while saving luke, there is still a semblance of your percy.Â
âyeah, the guy, paul blofis, heâs an english teacher â absolutely worships the ground she walks on.â
âsounds perfect for her.â
âyou should come over some time â see her, meet paul, yâknow,â percy offers, still funneling spoonfuls of pomegranates, meeting your gaze head-on (this is the home run you were waiting on).
you grinned, a slow smile overtaking your face, pushing your hands in the pockets of your jeans, âmight just take you up on that, before you change your mind.â (youâre leaving the ball in his hands now; itâs up to him to tag you out or let you reach home base safely.)
ânah, i wonât change my mind, unlike someone else i know.â
you ignore the jab (a smaller, suppressed part of you itches to shoot a reply back), instead choosing to focus on the hesitant hand of friendship being offered â as your father liked to say, keep moving forward.
you shrugged, and you swear, for a second you think the intensity of his gaze has lessened, almost as if disappointed. almost as if mentally shaking it off, percy hands you the china bowl back, empty, running a hand through his shaggy hair with a sheepish grin.
you smiled wryly, glancing down at the bowl and back to his face. âfatass,â you say, affectionately, and then almost freezing, wondering if you somehow overstepped the invisible lines constricting you.Â
percy laughs â a green light.Â
âlucky for you, though,â you say, disappearing behind the register for a moment before reappearing with a tupperware container filled with peeled pomegranates, âi peeled more.â
you hold it out to him, and he glances down at your outstretched hand, then at your face, before seemingly making up his mind, and accepting the olive branch, âyouâre really committed to seeing my mom, huh?â
âwell, obviously â the other alternative would be seeing you, wouldnât it?â
âaw, câmon, doc, i know you missed me,â percy says, a bit smug, picking up his skateboard, the tupperware container in his other hand (the one he still wears your bracelet on).
âin your dreams, jackson.â there is a peal of odd laughter in your voice as if you were unused to this kind of jocularity when fumbling over his name.
âin my dreams, we do more than just argue,â percy says, with one last smug smile and salute, before walking out the door, leaving you behind in the worst state of confusion youâve possibly suffered (percy jackson: 1, you: 0).
(your grandmother admonishes you later that evening as you stand beside her stooped figure at your kitchen counter, peeling pomegranates, you gave the rest of it to that boy, didnât you? her voice is not scolding, but you feel like a kid caught with their hand in the cookie jar once more. your immortal grandfather, the nuisance that he is, stands in the doorway, hands in an 80s leather jacket and matching sunglasses, waiting to be welcomed in. in contrast, his son â your father â brushes past him, grumbling, and takes on your grandmotherâs burden.)
the analog clock reads ten fifty-five as you start mopping the floor, yawning when the front door swings open with a jingling bell, and a sharp metallic smell wafts into the store.
you whirl around, gripping the mop in your hand as a baseball bat, immediately alert as your demigod reflexes come into play. you physically relax at the sight of percy clutching his side, crimson pooling on the edges of his white t-shirt.Â
âof course you would attack a man when heâs injured,â percy says with a grin, blood dripping from a gash over his eye (luke had returned to camp some years ago, with a similar scar), and a split lip, collecting like rust on his t-shirt collar.Â
you scowled, dropping the mop and immediately rushing toward him, your healing instincts kicking in. lifting one of his arms and letting it curl around you, you shouldered him to the register, cringing with every audible wince percy let out.
âwhat the fuck is wrong with you?â you asked, as you sat him on your stool, reaching for the ambrosia and nectar you kept hidden under the counter for emergencies (one could never be too careful).
percy grinned â it came out more of a grimace, âwhat isnât wrong with me â thatâs the question you should be asking, doc.â he nodded to himself, and then immediately cringed at the action.
you glared at him, shoving an ambrosia square in his mouth, before turning away from him to put antiseptic on cotton pads. âdoes ms. jackson know youâre here?â
âno?â percy says. you walk over to the fridge, grab a water bottle, unscrew the cap, and drench the part of his t-shirt covered in blood.
âow? in case you forgot, iâm still injured here, doc?â percy clutches at his side.
âyou dumbfuck, your mom is probably worried out of her mind right now,â you say, scowling, stepping closer to percy (he still towers over you, even when sitting down).
âi iris messaged her,â he shrugs, looking at you as you shift even closer to him, cotton pad in your hand, âshe just knows iâm with you â pretty relieved at that, dunno why.â
reaching out to grasp his jaw in your hand, you begin dabbing at the bruises on his cheekbones, his eyes fluttering shut as you try to ignore the way his hot breath is fanning across your face right now. âyou didnât tell her what happened?â
percy opened his eyes, staring at you. âno, how could i?â he says, slowly, âyou were her favorite â still are, by the way.â
you donât say anything for a moment â after all, how could you? (sally jacksonâs homemade cookies drift to the front of your treacherous mind â the sunny afternoons with her kind voice, and percyâs loutish laughter.)
âyou didnât come to see her,â percy says, the statement not accusatory, his eyes fluttering shut again (you try not to let the way his eyelashes sit so prettily distract you) as you dab at the gash over his eye.
âi didnât think i was welcome,â you say gruffly, turning away to grab bandages. âafter everything.â
while the deeper wounds have eased into far easier, superficial ones, you still make sure to wrap and bandage everything â percy had a penchant for getting into trouble (one that you knew all too well), so it was the least you could do.
âi just told you that you were welcome, last time i was here, didnât i?â percy says, an accusation.
âyeah, well, it was hardly an invitation was it?â you say, turning away from him, packing your supplies up.Â
âdoc, you didnât even come to take your tupperware back.â
you ignore him, moving to walk away when his hand is enclosed around your wrist (the hand that wears your blue friendship bracelet), tugging you around to face him.Â
percyâs standing up now, his green eyes looking more like a swirling storm with each passing second â he still hasnât let your wrist go.
âwhat do you want from me?â you ask, trying to snatch your hand back from him, to no avail â his grip is ironclad.
âi canât let you walk away with your back turned to me again,â he says (the dim, lantern-lit night comes back into focus, and you wonder if you were too consumed by your own pride, if you had just turned around, if you had just stayed).
you realize too late that tears are pricking in the corners of your eyes, and you manage to successfully wrench your hand out of his grasp, a watery, sarcastic laugh escaping, âyouâre a couple years too late, asshole.â
âi know that,â percy says, earnest, reaching out to cup your cheek, and wipe a stray tear (the action stuns you into paralysis), âbut i miss you, and my mom misses you, and she hasnât gotten off my case about you, yet.â
the thought of tender-hearted sally jackson scolding percy is an amusing one, and draws a laugh out of you against your will (percyâs smile grows a little brighter, and asclepius knows youâve never been able to resist that smile of his), âiâll come over for ms. jackson, not you.â
percyâs smile is even wider now (his hand is still ghosting your cheek), âsame thing.â
âshut up,â you say swatting at his shoulder, trying to duck out from under his arms.Â
percy avoids your attempts to escape him, instead latching onto your hand, and pulling you out of the store. âcâmon, sheâs expecting us for dinner.â
you let out an incredulous laugh, and let yourself be dragged out anyway (you would follow this boy anywhere, even to the depths of tartarus).Â
(your grandmother watches from the apartment window above the store, a soft smile gracing her lined features.)
âhis band is playing tonight, at seven,â annabeth reminds you, with the knowing air of someone far wiser, and far older, âyou should go.â (1.7k)
contains: loser older brother luke castellan x fem! reader. mortal au. pt 2 of parent trap but can be read standalone ish. guest appearances! rock / metal music references.
kashafâs note: i think i can call myself a melomaniac now
LUKE CASTELLAN HAS always occupied that in-between space, the no-manâs-land between something and nothing â his indecipherable gaze as his cold, black, and blued knuckles grazed your cheek when he tucked a lock of your hair behind your ear swims around your mind endlessly. despite how each thought, each expression, each breath is as familiar to you as your own, you have never quite known where you stand with him, regardless of how quickly he seemed to inhabit a piece of your soul.
the familiar weight of the mixtape that luke made you feels unusually burdensome in your hands, mirroring the heft of the songs on it that you have painstakingly committed to memory, each sleepless nightâs offerings of tossing and turning becoming a reoccurring ritual.Â
you had popped the tape in your walkman immediately after luke had handed it to you, incognizant of the way his eyes softened as you concentrated on the music, trying to identify the first song.Â
âthis is that band you like â l.a. guns, right?â
âyouâre a regular sherlock,â luke had said, smiling and sarcastic, twisting his silver rings.
âshut up, no i know this song,â you say, tilting your head and snapping your fingers. âits â um â i wanna be yours? nono, donât make that face at me, asshole, hold on⊠i wanna be your man?â
hues of pink crept up his cheeks, and you basked in the warmth of his answering crooked grin, the feeling wrapping around you like the caress of a summer night.Â
you uselessly stirred the spoon in your now stone-cold cup of chai, leaning across the kitchen table with your head propped up in your other hand. the phone taunts you from its corner on the counter, sitting just by the clear jar of blue cookies, its black hue a beacon among the sea of greens (the cabinets, the tiles â you liked to tell sally that she should try her hand at interior design one of these days) â as of late, the jacksonsâ kitchen has become somewhat of a refuge for you.Â
you set a steaming china cup down in front of him, listening to the sounds of percy, annabeth, and grover in the living room, pulling out the chair in front of him with a slight creak on the slightly worn wooden floors, and watching him as he taps his fingers along to bob marleyâs soft crooning, âlittle darlinâ, stir it upâ, lost in his own world. Â
âluke,â you say, breaking him out of his revelry.
luke sits up straight, meeting your amused gaze, âyeah?â he asks, reaching for his chai, and mumbling a quiet thanks as he sips it.
âyou look kinda stupid when you think,â you say, watching him blink before taking the bait, and hiding your smile of satisfaction behind your cup.
âyâknow, this is why you have a black hole for a heart,â he says, grinning crookedly, filling you with an indescribable longing to reach out and trace his grin.Â
âwhat?â you laugh, âwhat does that even mean?â
âjust that youâre mean,â luke says, and the afternoon sun chooses that specific moment to encompass him in its glow, like a kiss from apollo. âand that youâre emo.â
âyou literally say this every time, oh my god, iâm not mean or emo.â
âbecause iâm literally right?â
âyou like him,â annabeth says, sympathetically, standing in the doorway, arms folded across her chest, her braids resting across her shoulders, glancing from your untouched cup to your face, an expression of pity gracing her features. her presence caught you so off guard that you donât even question where percy ran off to, who was usually attached to annabeth like a conjoined twin.Â
âi know,â you say, shivering slightly, the revelation feeling strangely empty, although you suppose the same part of your soul that recognized him had always known, a small inkling reappearing with every argument, and every nudge.Â
âhe likes you,â annabeth adds matter-of-factly, interrupting your stream of consciousness.Â
âi know,â you repeat, picking at the lint on your sweater, and while this revelation is supposed to be shocking, it is also hollow, as you suppose your soul also knew this with every hushed conversation in the dead of night, and the slips of silence that only spoke volumes around him.
âhis band is playing tonight, at seven,â annabeth reminds you, with the knowing air of someone far wiser, and far older, âyou should go.â she turned and stalked back toward the living room.
you sat still for a minute or so, before sighing and putting lukeâs mixtape (even in your misery, he is somehow always there) in your walkman, putting your headphones on as axl rose trilled, âi said, baby you been lookin' real goodâ in his voice that took a while to get used to â something luke gave you a heads up on.
you sighed, conceding to annabethâs attempts to rewrite whatever fate had pushed the two of you apart, from the hours-long phone calls that dwindled into short, clipped conversations, you canât necessarily blame annabeth for trying to fashion a phoenix from the ashes of your friendship.Â
you stood up, grabbed your jacket off the back of the chair you were sitting upon, and walked into the living room, pausing for a few minutes to watch the scooby doo episode on the screen along with percy, grover, and annabeth, who were currently sprawled across the softly carpeted floor, arguing over monopoly.
âyouâre literally cheating,â percy was saying.
âiâm the banker, iâm supposed to be innocent,â annabeth argued back.
âpercy, i saw you steal a couple dollars behind annabethâs back,â grover added, rolling the dice.
âguys,â you said, interrupting their three-way argument, âput on your jackets and shoes, weâre going to the fair in five minutes.â
you ignored the way the troublesome trio exchanged glances, walking through the hallway covered in framed photos of percy and sally, going to wait by the door for them.
âso,â percy says, all-too-innocently, âwhy the sudden change of plans?â once the four of you are a couple of blocks away from his apartment.
âno reason, just wanted to see what was so hot about the fair,â you say, digging your hands in the pockets of your jacket. once more, you ignore the glances the trio exchange.Â
âso it doesnât have anything to do with a certain curly-haired individual that weâre currently seeing less and less of?â
you keep walking, trying to feign ignorance, although the question was so pointed even you were concerned with percyâs audacity, âwhatâre you talking about?â
âoh, nothing,â percy smiles. âjust the way ââ
ââ the two of you ââ
ââ were inseparable ââ
ââ for a disgustingly long time ââ
ââ and now youâre not ââ
ââ but weâre going to the fair because ââ
ââ his band is playing ââ
ââ and youâre going to try and fix ââ
ââ your troubles in paradise.â
you blinked slowly, as the three of them did jazz hands, matching shit-eating grins on all of their faces, âhow long did it take for you guys to rehearse that?â
âa week, give or take,â grover says, and annabeth shoots him a glare.
ânot the point, the point is, we support you.â
âgee, thanks, all i really needed was the support of three twelve-year-olds.â
âthree twelve-year-olds that know youâre stupidly in love with luke castellan,â percy points out.
âokay, yâknow whatâŠâ you trail off, frowning.
annabeth nudged percy, ânot the point here, again.â
âfine, fine, fine,â you huff, as the four of you approach the brightly illuminated fair, looking for the ticket-selling booth, âiâll buy you guys tickets so you can go hang out on the rides and iâll go to the concert.â
the three of them nodded happily, making a beeline for the cotton candy stand a few feet away. you shook your head before pushing through the bustling crowd to look for the concert stage. when you finally do find it, after three excuse meâs and four sorryâs, the concert is already in full swing, with what looks like a mini moshpit already forming somewhere near the center.
once youâve pushed your way to the absolute front, the darkening night sky serving as a backdrop, the harsh lights illuminate all five individuals on the stage, with a gorgeous girl with shaggily-cut hair and a raspy voice singing as lead (thalia? you think you remember luke telling you on the phone late at night once). however, your gaze almost immediately fixed on luke, who was playing a riff on his electric guitar, looking as hot as ever, his crooked grin on full display.
the band is covering l.a. gunsâ âi wanna be your manâ at the moment, and youâre suddenly very grateful to annabeth for her unsubtle nudges, because you wouldâve missed out on this sight of luke castellan, the view of his muscled arms bulging out of his band tee is permanently seared into your memory.
youâre almost sad when the show is over though, finally realizing why luke liked concerts so much, from the crowd surfing to the drumstick tricks during solos (beckendorf, you think the drummerâs name was â luke had mentioned him before) to the leadâs insane vocals, to the girl with long curly hair that stood next to you for most of the concert (probably the bandâs most enthusiastic fan), you savored every minute of it. however, youâre glad for the chance to corner luke afterwards, climbing onto the stage as the crowd begins to disperse in waves, and realizing the curly-haired girl was already among the band members packing up their instruments, helping the curly-haired bassist pack his things.Â
luke barely looks up at your sudden arrival. âwhatâre you doing here?â he asks, packing away his guitar.
âiâm here to see you,â you say, trying to drive the hint home.
âi told you that you didnât have to come see the band if you were busy,â luke says, uncomprehendingly, making eye-contact with you.Â
âi like you,â you say insistently.
âcâmon, letâs not kid ourselves right now, you said weâre friends so you donât have to try to make me feel better,â luke says, shrugging and looking away from your face, rubbing the back of his neck.
âi listen to your dumb mixtape every night, luke castellan. does a person whoâs not into you do that?â
there is something so raw about the way he looks right now, with his expression stilling as his cheeks are colored in swathes of red.Â
smiling at his dumbstruck expression, you surged forward to kiss him, ignoring all the wolf whistles and âget some, castellanâ enveloping the two of you, tangling your fingers into his hair, his hands coming to rest upon your hips.

i. remember the time - michael jackson
PERCY HAS ALWAYS liked afternoons: sitting on the green couch in his apartment, the smell of his favorite blue cookies wafting through the air, and the constantly running episodes of gilmore girls on the tv â that you had convinced him to give a try â and sometimes the addition of grover, who was prone to start passionate tirades on climate change.
though after summer camp, his relatively quiet afternoons now included at least two mentions of âseaweed brainâ and two of âwise girlâ.Â
percyâs trying to stay focused on rory freaking out over thanking dean for something (annabeth is almost laser-focused), but the doorbell rang a while ago, and you still havenât returned.Â
âannabeth,â he whispered, to no avail â he guessed dean really had that effect on people. he tried again, waving a hand in front of her face. she blinked twice before being lifted from the spell of gilmore girls.Â
âwhat?â annabeth asked.
âwhoâs at the door?âÂ
annabethâs eyebrows rose. she turned around, looking past where you were still holding the door open, one hand animatedly gesticulating, the other still on the doorknob.Â
âthatâs my brother,â annabeth said, turning back to look at percy.Â
but percy isnât paying attention to her right now, instead, heâs focusing on the bits of conversation audible between you and this stranger, whoâs smiling very peculiarly down at you.
ââ no way, me too,â the stranger is saying, grinning.
youâre saying, âdeadass? prove it ââÂ
ââ are you always so skeptical ââÂ
percy gets up off the couch, annabeth beside him, striding over to you and the stranger, who, for a reason he canât quite put a finger on, seems weird.Â
âhi,â percy says, looking at you, pointedly ignoring the stranger. you and the stranger seem to freeze, your hand halting mid-tuck of your hair behind your ear, something percy has only seen you do around one of your ex-boyfriends.Â
âhi,â annabeth says, looking at the stranger, who smiles in response. again, weird.
âready to go?â the stranger asks, âor are you going to take over their spare bedroom?â
âluke, youâre not funny,â annabeth grumbles, but she doesnât look that put out by lukeâs teasing percy notes.Â
youâre smiling, but youâre not looking at annabeth. youâre looking at luke, your one hand still on the doorknob. interesting.Â
âyouâve got your yankees cap?â you confirm as annabeth laces up her converse, as you and luke are engaged in a tiny conversation of your own. percy wordlessly hands the worn-out cap to annabeth once sheâs finished, saying his goodbye.
once annabeth and her brother are long gone and youâre no longer leaning against the door, youâre still smiling widely, and percy wonders why.
ii. shoop - salt n pepa Â
gilmore girls is on again, and luke is here to pick up annabeth. again. but for whatever reason, annabeth still hasnât left, and you and luke are sitting in the kitchen, alone, conversing loudly.Â
annabeth isnât as hyper-focused on dean and roryâs argument as percy had thought she would be a week ago â he assumed that deanâs appeal died the minute he got mad in that banged-up car. annabeth is saying something about architecture, eyes shining, though heâs not sure which one sheâs talking about, hagia sophia or st. basilâs cathedral. your loud laugh seems to ring from the kitchen every minute or so, and well since youâve begun babysitting him, he canât say the sound is unfamiliar, but the frequency is suspicious. he doesnât trust luke.Â
âannabeth,â he says, when sheâs stopped talking.
âpercy,â she responds in the same tone, her smile bright.
âhow long has your brother been in the kitchen for?â he says, trying to sound nonchalant, but missing the mark horrifically.
annabeth looks at the watch on her wrist, âwoah ââ
âwhat does woah mean?â percy knows heâs being impolite, and his mom taught him to never interrupt people, but he canât help it at this moment.Â
âi was just getting to that, seaweed brain,â annabeth rolled her eyes good-naturedly, âwe were supposed to leave an hour and half ago.â
this was bizarre. âno offense, but what does my babysitter and your brother even have in common to be talking nonstop for an hour and half?â
âno idea,â annabeth says, thoughtfully. âis she in a band? lukeâs in a band.â
âno,â percy says, but he thinks he remembers your last boyfriend being in a band. âis your brother a senior?â
âyeah â does she do boxing? luke does.â
âi actually donât know,â percy pauses, âi think we should see for ourselves,â he stands up.Â
âwait,â annabeth says, âthey might go quiet if they see weâre around. letâs just turn off the tv and eavesdrop.â
percy grins, annabeth was such a genius, âyou got it, wise girl.âÂ
theyâre both so silent, he wonders if youâll notice, but with the way youâre laughing again, borderline giggling, actually â which is odd â as you say, âshut up, you know what i meant,â he doesnât think youâll realize.Â
âerm, actually i donât,â luke says, nasally (in what percy hopes is mockery).Â
percy looks at annabeth, who rolls her eyes at him and mouths, âheâs being ironicâ. percy stares at the patterns in the carpet, and annabeth stares at the picture of percy and his mom hung on the wall, as they continue to strain their ears â which isnât hard because of how noisy you and luke are together.
âyouâre so insufferable.â
âand youâre the one who invited me in, so.â
âi was being nice,â you sound like youâre protesting, but percy and annabeth note the amusement in your voice with another shared glance.
âyou? nice? letâs be forreal.â
âiâm literally not even mean.â
âyou literally are.â
annabeth peeks at him, and percy thinks heâs had enough of listening to this conversation, which is quickly becoming weird. and mushy. he can practically see how youâre looking at luke, and how heâs looking at you, which is not at all something he wants to imagine.
he nods at annabeth, and they both try to make their footsteps as loud as possible when they start approaching the kitchen, just in case.Â
heâs grateful to every higher being out there when he and annabeth find you and luke in the kitchen simply sitting next to each other, no funny business involved.Â
iii. doo wop (that thing) - ms. lauryn hill
youâre on the phone, giggling. annabeth is over again, and thereâs no luke in sight, but percy suspects heâs on the other end of the line.Â
percy sighs and turns to annabeth, who always seems to know what to do because this little situation has gotten unbelievably out of hand.Â
âis that your brother on the phone?â
annabethâs concentration on the teetering jenga tower on the coffee table lingers, doo wop (that thing) playing on the tv in the background, âyeah, i think so.â
âhow do you know?â percy asks, watching annabeth carefully choose a jenga block to remove.
âthey like each other,â annabeth says, looking at him, as if itâs as obvious as grass being green.
âno, they donât,â percy pauses for a minute when annabeth raises her eyebrows at him. âhow do you know?âÂ
âlukeâs always calling her at home,â annabeth said, âand he made her a mixtape.â
âthat doesnât mean they like each other, that just means he likes her,â percy points out, crossing his arms.Â
they hear you giggle in the kitchen again. annabeth looks at him as if that proves her point.
annabeth blinks, her face lighting up, âoh my god, percy, we should set them up.âÂ
percy stares at her. he canât deny that for as long as heâs known annabeth, sheâs seldom been wrong, but he doesnât think this is the best idea. but, percy trusts annabeth, so he agrees.
iv. this is how we do it - montell jordan
percyâs spying on you. well, he doesnât consider it to be spying exactly, heâs just making sure nothing happens to you because despite annabethâs constant defense of her brother, percy still doesnât trust luke. percyâs always thought of you more than just his babysitter, after all the attempts at making blue hot chocolate and the comforting after nightmares, youâve turned into his sister.Â
heâs at annabethâs place now, and both of them decided to put their â what annabeth swears is fool-proof â plan into action. step number one: getting luke to invite you inside when you come to pick him up (which was so unbelievably easy, considering how luke has perpetual heart eyes when youâre around).
currently, youâre in the kitchen with luke (the two of you are always congregating in kitchens for some reason), and annabeth decided that she and percy absolutely had to keep an eye on the two of you.
youâre gasping, âluke castellan, you are such a liar.â
luke is laughing, âno iâm not.â his cheeks are red.
youâve seemed to notice this, and percy can see your gaze soften as you look at luke, but that doesnât stop you from making your point, âno, oh my god, you call me the mean one but here you are, talking shit about your rivals, just because theyâre better?â
percy has seen you argue with your ex-boyfriends, but not like this â not bright-eyed, and smiling, and none of them have been able to just flow the way you seem to with luke. this is it, he thinks, annabeth was completely and utterly right (as she is 90% of the time).Â
âyou take that back right now, those motley crue knockoffs arenât better than us,â luke says, sounding kind of angry, but percy can see his smile.
âyouâre totally bugging,â you say, âwhatâs wrong with motley crue?â
luke looks scandalized, and almost as if heâs pleading, he says, âplease tell me youâve at least listened to guns n roses,â pushing his hands together in a namaste position.
âi donât live under a rock, castellan,â you rolled your eyes at him, pushing his hands down. annabeth shares a look with percy.
âi mean, you never know,â he says, and you scoff, shoving him.
percy raises his eyebrows at annabeth, and she seems to know exactly what heâs thinking â time to put step two into action: set up a going-out idea.
percy and annabeth pretend to walk closer to the kitchen, to give the two of you time to spring apart, because you and luke werenât a very pg distance right now â maybe pg-thirteen, but percy wasnât supposed to be watching those, so.
annabeth jerks a finger at percy, as you and luke looked up at their arrival, addressing luke, âpercy doesnât believe that your band actually plays in public.â
percyâs head whips toward annabeth, trying not to glare at her, because the look on lukeâs face right now was not at all amusing, but at least you were smiling, so youâd definitely stop luke from killing him.
âyeah, luke,â you say, smirking, âwhere do you guys even play?â
luke frowns, âthe usual but weâre playing at the fair next week if youâre so interested.â the last part is aimed at percy, but their plan is going well so far, so percy doesnât think heâll have to sleep with one eye open tonight.
âwhen?â you ask, interested.
percy watches luke turn to you, surprised. âsaturday â why, you wanna come?â
âyeah,â you admit easily.
percy looks at annabeth, whoâs smiling and percy canât help but feel proud of their idea.
âreally? we donât go on until like seven though.â
âyeah, someone has to be there to cheer for you so you donât feel too bad when no one else does,â you grin.
luke turns to you, masking his smile with a fake air of irritation, âgee, thanks.â
âwhat are friends for?â
percy shares a disappointed glance with annabeth who begins to shake her head, as lukeâs smile freezes in place, and you suddenly look extremely remorseful.

percy jackson is a nuisance. a nuisance you have always been fond of, some way, somehow. (5.6k)
contains: percy jackson x daughter of aphrodite! reader. post tlo (spoilers). kind of melancholy but it gets better (kind of). book percy.
kashafâs note: guess whos alive!
TO QUESTION, to ponder, to seek out the gods is sacrilegious. the gods preferred their divinity to be kept strictly within the confines of worship â whether by completing their âmenialâ tasks or by committing sacrifices, they, in their infinite wisdom, are not allowed to be objected to.Â
âso, my momâs a god? of love?âÂ
you sighed, pinching the bridge of your nose, and mentally counted to three. opening your eyes, you make eye contact with the newest addition to camp, and your newest responsibility. bruised and scuffed, the poor kid blinks back at you confusedly as you mull your options. âyes, and no,â you decide.
âour momâs a goddess, and love is just the most common of her jurisdictions.âÂ
the new camper looks around the cabin, taking it in, you follow their gaze, lingering on the painted swans on the wall behind you, and bouncing to the pearls adorning the vanity, littered with various seashell trays holding gold jewelry (the first time you had entered these very walls, your throat had tightened at the pure ostentatiousness of it all).
they glance back at you, confused. you sighed again, âyes, our mom is the goddess of love.â
âoh.â
the candles residing in conches flicker as if waiting to pass judgment, and silence blankets you and the new camper once more (this is potentially your fiftieth time attempting to explain the same concept, yet youâre no better at it than when you first started â shaking and solemn).Â
needless to say, itâs more than just difficult to explain this tacit rule to new campers â after whatever tragic event transpired for them to realize that the greek gods of myth and legend indeed exist, they simply donât have the mental capacity to learn the unspoken rules of the whole being a demigod thing.
you could be warmer, somehow, you suppose, with your mother being the goddess of love and all â in all honesty, youâre still not sure how you became the aphrodite cabin counselor, over selina (the entirety of camp half-bloodâs favorite daughter of aphrodite) but the counselorship would have ended up in your hands anyway, after everything (the sight of her once-beautiful face as she coughed up blood in clarisseâs lap swims across your memories).Â
you pinched the bridge of your nose again, sighing as the candles snuffed out all at once of their own accord (judgment has been passed), âtake the empty bed in the corner, we get up at like the ass crack of dawn so you might wanna catch up on your sleep.â
you watched the kid sit on the bed (looking every bit out of place as you did when you first arrived amidst the sheer indulgence the cabin is), and you canât help but feel a pang in your chest as the child (the entire camp is full of children, but the vast majority of you have never gotten the chance to be the children that you are) stared wide-eyed at posters of movie stars, like tristan mclean, adorning the walls.
with one last glance and forlorn smile at the kid, you walked out of your cabin, your expression hardening at the sight of other campers. the walk to the arena is a short yet bleak one, in the silence you can hear drewâs screaming ringing in your ear (drew is preferable to hearing your other half-siblings, ethan, or even luke; drew is alive).
in the middle of the sword-fighting lesson being taught, you slipped into the arena, undetected for the most part except for the pair of sea-green eyes trained on your figure as you came and stood next to him, clearly hanging back.
âthis is usually your shit, jackson,â you say, ignoring how pitiful your racing heart is, and watching clarisse at the helm, steam blowing out of her ears as new campers fell over themselves trying to parry and block with wooden swords.
percy turns to look at you, and from the corner of your eye, you can sense the storm brewing across his face. âmaybe iâm not the attention whore you think i am,â he snorts, and there is a small trace of bile in his voice, but you donât focus on that.
instead, your face burns at the memory of your last argument after you dove in front of ethanâs knife (you still wince when you remember the way his visible eye widened when he realized it was you who caught the blow), and percyâs bitterness as will patched you up, what the fuck is wrong with you, you couldâve gotten yourself killed.
and your weak but indignant reply, i literally saved your life, asshole. are you that much of an attention-whore that you need to be the one on their deathbed right now?
âiâd say you kind of are,â you say, turning to meet his gaze (for a brief, stupid, second you wonder if somehow he was a son of zeus because of how the air suddenly became charged with electricity), arms folding across your chest. âthe whole making the gods pay child support is a bit attention-whore-esque.â
percy laughed, a sound you and the other campers havenât heard in a while (itâs different from before but it is still a sound that in your weaker moments, you admit to craving to hear). âsomeone had to do it,â he says, sobering up immediately.
âluke tried,â you whispered (the name is still taboo around camp), shivering as you felt percy stiffen beside you. a beat passes and the resulting silence is suffocating.
percy offers you a sad, tight smile before walking out of the arena. you watch him go with a strange pain in your chest and a longing for the before, the laughter leaping across the sun-drenched strawberry fields, the joking i told you soâs during meals, and the softness of the campfire sing-a-longs.
itâs hard not to blame the gods, for that is blasphemy, but on most nights, you find yourself uttering your motherâs name with a tangible acidity, and you find that youâre not alone in this sentiment. the once-reverent echoes of aphrodite, promise me true love, promise me victory, promise me beauty, have now faded to lifeless whispers â formalities instead of prayers.Â
even your own prayers are different now, you pray for the sea â if your mother is allowed to be ambiguous with her gifts (curses) then she must expect the same ambiguity in your prayers in return. when youâre done half-heartedly muttering your prayers and sacrificing your food, your gaze meets a familiar pair of sea-green eyes across the campfire, glowing like a beacon in the dark.Â
standing up, you find drew, looking every bit as perfect as ever. you lean down to whisper, âlights out at eleven, iâll be back.âÂ
drew nods, squeezing your hand before she begins herding the rest of your half-siblings back to your cabin, solemn and toneless (an empty shell compared to the once vibrant and snarky drew from before).
the walk to the beach is silent, although you know that youâre being followed â you didnât survive the war being complacent. when you finally do arrive, the mysterious figure reveals himself in the moonlight (again, youâd be a fool to not recognize the son of poseidonâs careful footsteps).
percy looks every bit of a character straight out of a tragic romance novel that your mother probably inspired, and again your heart squeezes painfully at the sight of him â under the scars and the jaded attitude, he is still the same percy jackson with stars in his eyes when he first introduced you to his mother.Â
âwhy do the naiads call you that?â percy asks abruptly, tilting his head to the side as if studying you as he approaches.
barely audible accusations of apatuâria bubble at the surface of the lake like seafoam; the whispers have followed you since you arrived at camp, and you have never known why.
âcall me what?â you ask, feigning ignorance as iterations of deceitful replay across your mind.
percy blinks, confused, âisnât your mother related to the sea somehow? donât you know they call you apatuâria?â
you fiddle with the gold bracelet on your wrist (a gift from selina), percyâs gaze follows the movement as you hesitate. âwell, yeah, like i know what it means but i donât know why they call me that.â
percy shrugged, shoving his hands into the pocket of his jeans. âthey call me âprosklystiosâ a lot,â he said (in the way that he knows you, better than you know yourself). Â
âso what, weâre just reduced to epithets of our parents? what an honor,â you mumbled sarcastically, staring out at the lake, watching its surface ripple as the accusations grew more fervent. you paid it no mind however, the burden of being a daughter of aphrodite had already claimed its weight on your shoulders.Â
âcareful,â percy sighed, his gaze focusing on you instead of the water, âmightâve just won a war but that wonât stop either of us from being smited if big guy in the sky thinks weâre being impertinent.â
distant thunder rumbled overhead as if proving his point.
âspeak for yourself, pretty boy,â you say, eyes looking toward the firmament littered with stars, incognizant of your admission, âif i got the gods to basically pay child support without being sent to tartarus, i would do whatever the fuck i wanted.â
percy being percy, of course, did not register that last bit of your sentence, a shit-eating grin forming across his face, a slight red hue tinging his cheeks, âyou think iâm pretty.â
you turn to look at him, ignoring how your heart hammers at the way heâs smiling down at you, you roll your eyes. âpercy,â you say slowly. âmy mom is the goddess of love, everyoneâs gorgeous in her eyes.â
âyeah, but not everyoneâs gorgeous in your eyes.âÂ
gods, he was so aggravating but the way his eyes twinkled and the genuine elation on his face almost made you admit defeat.Â
you crossed your arms over your chest, narrowing your eyes at him, âthis is why i never compliment you, you always let it go to your head.â
âaw, câmon, you love me for it though,â percy says, still grinning widely, his unruly black hair falling into place perfectly.
âyouâre an actual attention-whore,â you say, spinning around on your heels and trekking across the sand, leaving percy alone to stare out at the water. you walk back to camp, ignoring percyâs calls of wait punctuated by his laughter as he jogs up behind you.Â
âi hope mr. d catches you out past curfew and the harpies eat you,â you say deadpan, once percy has caught up to you.Â
âyouâd miss me too much and would come to be my hero, again,â percy smirks at you, following along as you head toward aphrodite cabin (youâre secretly very glad for his presence, you hate walking around camp when itâs this deserted â the memories that you tried so desperately to bury try to claw their way to the surface).
âjust because i caught a knife for you, once, does not mean that iâll ever do it again,â you say, folding your arms across your chest as you stand outside the door of your cabin. âgetting stabbed is not a ten out of ten experience.â
percy softens, his impish grin still there, but the intensity of his gaze is enough to make you melt, âgood, canât have you dying on me.â
you snorted, âeven if i did die, iâd tell nico to raise my ghost so i could haunt you forever.â
percyâs still smiling, his eyes are still soft, and heâs so close to you right now. âgo out with me,â he says, suddenly, earnestly.
blood rushes to your ears. âwhat?â you blinked, staring at him as if heâd grown another head.
percy shrugged, leaning forward to press a feather-light kiss to the crown of your head. you barely registered the action in your mind, trying to regain your ability to form coherent sentences as you watched him. percy looked away from your questioning gaze. âbetter go before the harpies eat me,â he said before jogging in the direction of his cabin.Â
he leaves you standing in front of your cabin door, frozen in shock for another five minutes, before you shake it off, and head inside, convincing yourself that you had imagined the entire encounter. the familiar scent of jasmine envelops you as you linger in the doorway. drew is still awake on her bed, her back pressed against the wall and her head in her arms. she doesnât bother to look up at your entry until youâre sat next to her, curling an arm around her bony shoulders and pulling her into an embrace.Â
the two of you sit in silence as drew attempts to calm her heartbeats to sync with yours, her head resting on your shoulder as you rub soothing circles into the planes of her shoulder. you fall asleep in a tangled mess of limbs, a desperate attempt to close the gaping hole selina left in her wake. this is sisterhood, you think when you wake up and drewâs head weighs like lead on your shoulder.
the bright morning does little to assuage your burdens â you know itâs going to be a long day as soon as you hear campers giggling. rule number one of being a camp counselor: no matter how benign, giggling is the number one sign of trouble.
you took a deep breath and exhaled slowly before turning to the younger half of your half-siblings currently in the process of attempting arts and crafts. âwhat the fuck do you guys keep giggling about?â
your half-siblings only giggle harder.Â
after what seemed like eons, the new camper finally comes up to you â a kid no older than eight, who motions for you to bend down before they begin stage-whispering in your ear, âis percy jackson your boyfriend?â
you immediately feel scandalized, jerking away like youâve been burned, âno, who said that?â
(when youâre being lulled to sleep by the sound of drewâs imperceptible snoring in your ear, your subconscious spends its time lingering, dwelling on couldâve beenâs, and shouldâve beenâs, the obsession as stubborn as when you refused to believe that percy had actually died on mount st helens.)
the kid continues to smile âinnocentlyâ, âeveryone says that you guys hold hands at campfires.â
sudden flashes of percyâs unyielding grip on your hand and his broad smile, as he forced you into a sing-a-long with him, rise to the forefront of your mind, but that was before â when annabeth still had a steely look in her eyes, when travis and connorâs antics still garnered laughs from everyone (and a rare amused glance from mr. d). now (the after), there is no such jocularity, and percy is kept at armâs length, reduced to offering you sad smiles across the campfire.
âwe do not hold hands at campfires,â you say, struggling to keep the disdain out of your voice.
âbut thereâs a âweâ,â the kid says, scrutinizing you up and down.
you have to mentally count to three so that you donât end up arguing with a literal child (itâs not a great way to prove that your sanctity is still intact). âthereâs no we.â
the kid shrugs in an if you say so gesture, giving you one last weirdly knowing look before turning back to their arts and crafts. a weighty silence settles, punctuated only by the sounds of scissors and rustling papers.Â
stares and loud whispers follow you around camp, more so than usual for an aphrodite kid â clarisse finds you in the midst of it all, lost in thought when her cabin is supposed to be pulverizing apollo cabin at volleyball, a sharp glint in her eye.Â
âyouâd tell if me you were dating prissy, right?â she says, her hand faintly closing around your elbow, pulling you out of your reverie.Â
âwhat are you talking about?â you say, eyebrows raising in shock. this wasnât your first rodeo â just before the war this summer, camp gossip had credited you to be going out with connor stoll, but this was different. clarisse was the fifth person today who had asked you if you were dating percy.Â
âso you are dating him?â clarisse looks offended, or well, as offended as clarisse can be, âand you didnât tell me.â
you can feel eyes on you, watching your every move as other campers subtly pause their activities to listen in.Â
âclarisse,â you say slowly, reaching out to hold her forearms and looking her in the eye, âiâm not dating percy.â when she opens her mouth to interrupt, you add, âand i would definitely tell you if i was.â
clarisse exhales, shooting you a disbelieving look, but mercifully leaving you alone with a quiet, âokay.â
you know what sheâs thinking, so you offer her a taut smile, patting her on her shoulder as you brush past her. you headed toward the lake, with a feeling that youâd find the answers you were searching for.
the lake is empty except for one solitary figure on the sand, facing the horizon with his hands in his pockets. you hang back for a minute or two, taking in the sight of percy with his eyes closed, and the peaceful look on his face.Â
a grin settled across his face as he addressed you, his eyes still closed, âi know you think iâm pretty, you donât have to stare to prove it.â
you ignored his words, and he opened his eyes to watch you angrily march across the sand to stand face to face with him.Â
âare you the reason why everyone thinks weâre seeing each other?â
âyeah, why?â
to say that youâre taken aback is an understatement â you had anticipated some more denial but this was unexpected. and sudden. Â
you jab a finger at his chest, âeveryoneâs getting the wrong idea, so you need to stop whatever it is youâre doing like right now.â
âbut they could have the right idea,â percy says, looking amused.
your heart scrapes painfully against your chest, âwhat the fuck are you talking about?â
âwe could be dating, for real,â percy says, excruciatingly slow, elongating each word.Â
the earth stops spinning on its axis for a minute, and time seems to freeze â for a split second you worry kronos has risen again before you calm your racing heartbeat and exhale slowly.
âi need you to be so for real right now,â you say, your eyebrows furrowing.
âiâm being so deadass right now.âÂ
âno, youâre not,â you say, turning and walking away. your heart squeezes pitifully in your chest, as you call out, âfind me when you stop joking,â before leaving him alone on the shore.
when percy approaches you again, you think heâs finally come back to his senses, though a weaker, more primitive urge inside you hopes that he hasnât (itâs for the better, you try and fail to convince yourself).
he interrupts your conversation with drew (though the two of you werenât doing much talking), smiling charmingly at her before asking if he could steal you away for a minute during breakfast. drew shot you a concerned look, waiting for your reassuring smile before assenting.
âyouâve come to your senses?â you ask after percy leads you away from the mess hall.
âiâve always had my senses, thank you very much,â percy grins.
you roll your eyes, trying not to smile, âoh yeah, i could totally tell when you played rock, paper, scissors with a hundred-handed one last summer.â
âhey,â percy says, throwing his hands up in the air defensively, âi won that one.â
âon a gamble,â you countered, smiling (you missed this, missed him, and the feeling that everything will be alright enduring).
ânot the point.â
âthen what is?â
âgo out with me,â he repeats, sudden, and earnest.
your heart stuttered pitifully. ânot this again,â you sighed.
âwhy not?âÂ
âwhy?â
âyou know why,â percy tries to make eye contact with you. still, you avoid his gaze, watching the other campers heading into the mess hall give the two of you weird looks.Â
âno, i donât,â you say firmly, before walking away, ignoring his protests, leaving behind a group of onlookers that you could care less about, and percy, who was staring at the spot you had just been standing in.
you returned to your cabin, to the familiar jasmine scent and pearl adornments, and promptly collapsed on your bed. more than anything, you just wanted your mother. you wanted your mother to smooth out your hair as you cried, offer you advice, and get rid of the stupid curse.
the door opens quietly and you immediately sit up, dabbing at your face and hoping that your eyes havenât turned red and swollen already. drew shut the door gently behind her, her expression softening the slightest fraction at the sight of you.
âdo i look that bad?â you ask, trying not to sniffle (and failing miserably).
a whirlwind of emotions cross drewâs face and you manage a watery grin. âokay, yâknow what, donât tell me then.â
drew sits next to you on the bed, handing you a box of tissues, âwasnât planning to.âÂ
the two of you sit shoulder to shoulder as she lets you have a minute to clean up before going straight for the jugular. âi heard what happened.â
you laughed, a choking noise that dissolved into weak coughing. drew patted your back. âso, the entire camp knows now?â
âno,â she says, before changing her mind, âwell, yeah.âÂ
âgreat,â you groaned, âmy life is so over.â
drew tensed, tearing her gaze from the posters of hot people on the wall, to look at you, her brown eyes ablaze with fury and her silver earrings (also a gift from silena) jangle, âshut up, youâre the senior counselor of aphrodite cabin, and theyâre all losers unworthy of your time. your life so isnât over.â
(this is the drew from before, the drew that comes and goes in flashes so sudden that you try to piece her together like a puzzle that never seems to connect.)
âthe curse,â you say, your throat tight.Â
drewâs eyes widen imperceptibly, her blue eyeshadow sparkling in the candlelit cabin, before her expression settles into a scowl. âwhat about the gift?â her voice sharpens as she stresses the last word, sparing the smallest glance toward the roof of the cabin.
you canât continue, and you donât have to â she knows what it is that youâre thinking of (she always has, from the minute you met her, two cold and shaking children alone in the dark).
she shakes her head emphatically. âsilena,â her voice chokes, before dropping to a whisper, âsilena left us â you canât leave us too.â
âi know,â you whisper back, your eyes filling with tears. âi know.â
âoh, honey,â drew says sympathetically, drawing you into her arms, and smoothing your hair away from your face as you let out a sob against her shoulder. âbreak his heart,â she says.Â
âi canât,â you mumble.
âyou have to. heâll die if you donât, and a broken heart is better than dying.â
âi canât do that to him, heâs so unbelievably good, drew, he deserves everything and more.â
âignoring how ridiculously sappy that sounded, look at what happened to beckendorf,â you pretend not to notice how drew stumbles through his name (he looked at silena as if she had personally hung the stars in the night sky), âmaybe he wouldnât have gotten over it, but he wouldâve been alive.â
you remember how silena had proudly said she was going to put an end to the archaic rite of passage your cabin was infamous for around camp; beautiful, idealistic silena with stars in her eyes (who liked beckendorf to the point sheâd blush profusely at the mention of his name), who had no idea that this would all come crashing down around her some short months later.Â
at your silence, drew continues, still stroking your hair, âlook, not to make this harder, but even iâll admit jacksonâs one of those guys you meet once in a lifetimeââ
âthanks, drew, that was really helpful,â you interrupt, chuckling dryly.
âoh, shut up, i had a point,â drew says, swatting your shoulder playfully.
you sigh, letting her continue.
âso, like i was saying before i was so rudely interrupted, because jacksonâs one of those once-in-a-lifetime type of guysââ here, you coughed pointedly, making drew glare at you before continuing, ââyou should be like more willing to see him happy and like living a long ass life because youâre so in love with him.â
âso what, either i reject him and ruin our friendship irreversibly or we date and i break his heart and ruin our friendship irreversibly, or we date and i donât break his heart and he dies tragically and thereâs a possibility that i die tragically too?â
drew shrugged, making a tiny braid in your hair, âpretty much.â
you turned your head in her lap to look her in the eye, âhow are you so apathetic about this?â
âsomeone has to be because youâre not thinking this through rationally.â
you groaned, âaphrodite has to hate us.â (you havenât called her âmomâ genuinely except to her face during the winter solstices.)
âno, she lives for this kind of thing,â drew rolled her eyes, braiding another piece of your hair, âshe definitely thinks sheâs doing us a favor.â
you groaned again, âwhat if i just avoid him until summer ends and he goes back to school and forgets this happened.â
âi didnât think love made you this stupid,â drew says, amused.
âshut up, i canât wait until you have the same dilemma, and youâre the one asking for advice.â
âdoubt it,â drew says, wryly.
you rolled your eyes, âokay, but what if i tell him about the âgiftâ,â you make air-quotes, âand let him decide?â
âyeah, but what if that just makes it backfire and makes you die tragically either way.â
âwell, at least heâll know about the possibility? itâs better than just being like âoh i canât date you even though iâve liked you since i was twelveâ with like zero explanation whatsoever.â
you hear muffled footsteps coming from outside of the cabin, and the door swings open loudly to admit lacy, who looks flustered and out of breath. you and drew quickly sprang up off your bed at her arrival.
âyour boyfriendâs asking for you,â she says, looking at you.
drew raises her eyebrows at you, an unspoken are you going to see him? behind it.Â
you furrowed your eyebrows back at her, conveying no, shut up.
drew shrugged at you as if saying if you say so.
lacy looks between the two of you, confusion apparent before cautiously interrupting, âheâs waiting outside, by the way.â
you panicked at the thought of possibly confronting percy, âlacy, whatever you do, donât tell him iâm in here.â you paused, âwait, tell him iâm taking a nap or something, please.â
more shuffling noises can be heard from outside, and drew groans, smacking her forehead with her palm, âwhat is wrong with you?â
you ignored her, focusing on lacy, whose confusion intensified as she looked between the two of you. âtell him iâm sleeping and he should try coming back later.â
she nodded, before opening the door and stepping outside.
drew stared at you, âyâknow, i thought people were exaggerating when they said love makes you stupid but after looking at you, they were so right.â
you scowled at drew. she raised her arms in surrender, âjust calling it like i see it.â
lacy returned a second later, âum, he wasnât outside when i went to tell him.â
that was decidedly odd, but you chalked it up to him being busy or something, and shrugged, âiâll see him later, itâs fine.â
it was actually not fine, because you didnât see him later. or the next day. or the day after. well, you saw him but you didnât see him. percy had somehow uncovered a hidden talent for making himself appear everywhere and nowhere all at once. he was there at meals, laughing with tyson or grover, he was at sword fighting practices, leading the class or giving clarisse a partner, he was at campfires, sitting next to annabeth and connor. yet, the minute you tried to approach him, it was almost as if heâd vanish, like an immortal was running interference.
youâve taken to wandering by the lake on most nights â your only company the voices of silena (go talk to him, her urging is as present as if she was really there, memories of the time the two of you hadnât been talking for a week resurging) and luke (whatâre you doing out this late, kid? a phantom hand reaching out to ruffle your hair, and the feeling of ice being poured down your back envelops you).Â
as the sun sets, the tall and lanky figure â a figure you could recognize on the darkest nights â stands overlooking the lake in true jay gatsby fashion, his hands dug deep into the pockets of his baggy jeans. you stop and stare for a second (maybe a minute, an hour, time has truly escaped you), and suddenly youâre small and shivering in the dark again.Â
percy doesnât look at you when you approach, though he fidgets with his camp necklace.Â
âhi,â you say, unsure of where to begin.Â
percy sighs, âlook, if youâre here to ask for space, i get it, i didnât mean to make you uncomfortable the other day.â he doesnât turn to look at you or even glance at you through the corner of his eye once.Â
âwhat?â you ask. âwhat are you talking about?â
âtrust me, i get it, you donât have to try to spare my feelings,â percy says. you want to will him to spare you just a glance. still, he avoids your gaze, focused on the horizon before you. âweâve been friends for so long, i thought you could be honest with me.â
his words, though not said harshly (percy isnât capable of being harsh, not to you at least) cut through you like a knife.Â
âyou heard me when i was talking to lacy, then,â you say, with horror as the realization dawns on you slowly.
percy finally looks at you, and the sheer hurt in his iridescent eyes makes you inhale sharply. a lump forms in your throat.
âi did,â he confirms quietly. âwhy didnât you say something earlier?â
fighting in a war hadnât prepared you for manâs greatest folly, something that you, arguably, shouldâve been good at. the lump in your throat is difficult to dislodge, yet percy is patient as you swallow uncomfortably.
âi never meant it like that.â
percyâs eyes flash, and you feel sick to your stomach. âhave you ever wondered why so many of the other cabins hate us?â
his previously pained expression morphed into a look of confusion. you continued, âin aphrodite cabin, our rite of passage is to break your first loveâs heart. silenaââ your voice breaks. ââsilena tried to put an end to it, and then both she and beckendorfââ you choke up again, and percyâs expression becomes solemn, âdied tragically. we didnât know the consequences of not doing it were real until then, and we realized it was a curse.â
you watch percy seemingly wrestle with his thoughts, taking a step toward you.Â
âwhy didnât you tell me this earlier?â there is no judgment in his voice, yet you still feel embarrassment pooling in your stomach.
âcan you honestly tell me that youâre okay with this? with the gods dictating another aspect of your life?â (somewhere in the back of your mind, you can hear lukeâs voice repeating the same sentence.)
âyou didnât ask for this either.â
âitâs not our job to question them,â you say, trying not to let a tear slip.
âmaybe we should,â percy says, still looking straight at you.Â
âcareful,â you say, as thunder rumbled distantly overhead, âthis is what luke was saying.â
âi donât care,â percy says, âif you or i die a tragic death, weâll just have to go through tartarus.â
he said it so simply, so matter-of-factly that your breath catches in your throat.
âso, youâre okay with this?â you ask, trying to suppress the tinge of hopefulness in your voice.
percy looked at you in disbelief, his face was so earnest, âwhy wouldnât i be?â
you laughed, more out of shock than anything else. percy continued, âi think your mother would think weâd make a cute couple, so maybe she wonât curse us with a tragic end.â
youâre grinning now, tears forgotten, âmore like sheâll give us a tragic end because she likes us.â
percy shrugged, âi think weâll be fine as long as weâre together.â
he kissed you, finally, which was long over-due, and you felt like everything was finally falling into place.Â
âtook you guys long enough.âÂ
you turned around to find the source of the interruption, making eye-contact with clarisse, her arms folded and a smug expression on her face. beside her stands most of your friends, all adorning matching wicked expressions. your heart stops beating for a second before your cheeks flush with embarrassment.
âhow much of that did you guys hear?â percy asked, suddenly looking bashful.
âmost of it,â drew replied with a smirk.
percy looked at you, a mixture of embarrassment and amusement on his face as your friends surrounded the both of you, hoisting you on their shoulders.
âmaybe the two of you need to cool off,â annabeth said with a laugh.
connor grinned at her, before calling out, âdump them in the lake!â
you groaned, begging, âannabeth, please.â
âthis is payback for all the pining i had to witness over the years,â she said with another bright laugh.
percy shrugged at you, a grin on his face as if saying accept your fate. you gave in, shaking your head as you laughed at their antics.
