Today was an emotional rollercoaster. I was trying to cook bacon in the broiler to reduce the grease on top of my my stove and in the air of my apartment. I flipped the strips and everything was fine, but when I went back 5 minutes later to turn the oven off, there was thick, black smoke engulfing my kitchen. I turned the broiler off and realized this was a serious situation. I called 911 for help and unlike I usually am with an emergency call, I was so frantic and panicked, I couldn't keep my mind straight. In minutes, I was met by not one, but two fire trucks, two police cars, and an ambulance. Luckily I got to the oven and turned it off before anything caught fire. I was so scared, I couldn't think straight. I'd never experienced any sort of out of control situation with fire, so I had no idea what to do. I knew enough to keep the oven doors closed and to get out, but I felt utterly helpless as my neighbor was telling other residents to evacuate. It was like the films they showed us in elementary school. The smoke was filling my apartment, and it was so thick it was hard to see, but there was a clear layer on the ground and I remember being told to crouch low. I still can't believe how much smoke there was and how dark and thick it was. I cried, I apologized to everyone, I hyperventilated, and then I cried and apologized and hyperventilated when the police and firemen left. I couldn't go into my apartment for a few hours because the burnt smell and sight of my black stove kept making me panic and cry. After I finally calmed down and was comforted by another neighbor, I went back in and cleaned everything up, determined not to let my fear get the best of me. My cabinets next to the stove are a little charred, there's ash all over my kitchen, bathroom, and main room, and the smell of smoke and burning plastic is still lingering. I can't believe I was so lucky. I can't believe how much smoke there was in what felt like seconds. I can't believe I managed to get a bra on while I was on the phone with the 911 operator (whew, that was a miracle. I hate being seen without a bra). Nothing was ruined, I'm okay, and nothing or no one outside of my apartment was harmed. I'm not sure when I'll be brave enough to turn my oven on to see if it still works, or to use it to cook, but until then, there's an Applebee's right down the street. I'm so grateful and happy to be alive.
