Vogelinsel Wittringen

Die Anlage von Schloss Wittringen befindet sich auf einer Insel und ist somit vollständig von Wasser umgeben. An die „Schlossinsel“ ist im Westen die kleinere, sogenannte „Vogelinsel“ angebunden.

Auf der Vogelinsel stand früher vermutlich eine befestigte Motte, die als Vorgängeranlage des heutigen Schlosses gesehen werden kann.

Vom Innenhof des Wasserschlosses Wittringen erreichen man über eine Holzbrücke die Vogelinsel. Auf ca. 840 m² Grundfläche haben zahlreiche Vögel in den Sommermonaten hier ihr Zuhause. Entlang eines Rundweges befinden sich jeweils zum Uferrand elf Volieren mit exotischen Vögeln, die mit ihrer bunten Vielfalt zahlreiche Besucher anlocken.

Aras, Kakadus und andere Papageienvögel bilden den Hauptbestand, hinzu kommen weitere ´Exoten´ wie Turakos und Fasane, Beos und Flamingos.

Die meisten der Tiere stammen aus privater Haltung. Teilweise sind es Abgabetiere, die man nicht mehr haben wollte, teilweise Beschlagnahmungen oder auch Übernahmen aus Tierheimen.

Viele der Vögel haben eine traurige Vergangenheit und fanden hier eine neues Zuhause unter fachkundiger Betreuung.

Wittringen Bird Island

The Wittringen Castle complex is located on an island and is thus completely surrounded by water. The smaller, so-called "Bird Island" is connected to the west of the "Castle Island."

A fortified motte and bailey castle presumably once stood on the Bird Island, which can be considered the predecessor of the present-day castle.

A wooden bridge leads from the inner courtyard of Wittringen Castle to the Bird Island. Numerous birds make their home here during the summer months on an area of approximately 840 m². Along a circular path, eleven aviaries with exotic birds are located along the shore, attracting numerous visitors with their colorful diversity.

Macaws, cockatoos, and other parrots form the main population, along with other "exotic" species such as turacos, pheasants, beos, and flamingos.

Most of the animals come from private owners. Some are surrendered animals that were no longer wanted, others were confiscated, or even acquired from animal shelters.

Many of the birds have a sad past and have found a new home here under expert care.
