W.I.P. Week — Day 4 (February 27): Your Most Popular WIP

Considering I don’t actually post W.I.P.s very often or show them to anyone, I don’t really have a lot of options for this one to choose from, and of the few I do have that I’ve shown to other people, I’ve already uploaded two as previous entries in this event, so that leaves me with only three others.

Of the three I had left that I’d shared publicly before, I’m going to say it’s probably this one, which is just a simple colored sketch of Yashiro Tsurugi from Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE that I made well over a year ago now and never got around to turning into a proper drawing. 

The only other contender for this category is obviously my The Legend of Zelda: Within Shadows anime, which I can’t really submit here as I don’t have anything truly W.I.P. week-worthy of it at the moment that I would be comfortable posting.

Honestly, I don’t even have more than two completed fics uploaded anywhere yet, and only one yet untitled W.I.P. that I’ve posted an excerpt of for yesterday’s entry, so that’s going to be a bit hard to name, but I do have some personal fics I have at home that I’ve shown to my family, so I guess I can count those, as well.

This method, though I believe it has existed for quite a while, hasn’t ever gotten an official name. The method is actually pretty simple to understand and it’s pretty easy to explain as well, but at the same time, it’s a complex method of how to tell stories at the same time.

You see, the Tree method of storytelling, in simple terms is an expanding form of storytelling that allows writers to constantly expand on the world they’re writing in. It’s been used many times in many ways. With the Star Wars Expanded Universe that is now no longer canon as well as DC and Marvel. Though they don’t use it on the scale that I do.

How it works is simple: You start with just a single story, in my case, I start with the story Within Shadows. And from that story, you glance through it and look for events that you either unintentionally or intentionally set up, one way or the other...to be continued and expanded upon. Even if you have to write shorter pieces for it in return. You take either one event or one particular character in the story and you expand from there. You focus on this event and what it’ll lead to if it seems particularly interesting and elaborate further to help build the world. In Within Shadows, I had two people that worked for an organization that helps protect the world. They’re a complicated organization and a form of World Government. They act similar to our world’s version of the UN, but more neutral. They help act as peacekeepers and mediators for the other nation and they try to enforce magical laws as well. But they also simultaneously keep themselves as secretive as possible. Protecting the world’s secrets at the same time.

But I don’t elaborate on that on a great deal. Which is why I expand on it in The Archmage. I follow up from Within Shadows and go into The Archmage with the two people that were working for this organization and I even introduce the person in charge of said organization, while introducing a plotline for him and several other situations too. From The Archmage, I was able to set up around six stories all in just a five chapter Novella. (Note, it will be divided into it’s own series. A three to four part series in it of itself that happens alongside one of the stories that I set up.)

That’s how the Tree Method of writing works. You plant a single seed once it’s ready and let it take root. From there, you let it expand and grow on it’s own and it helps create the world as a whole. All my stories are connected. That is how I write. Feel free to use my method how you please. Though it’s difficult to track this method. That’s why you keep a list of them.
