Andy listened, a sympathetic look on her face. There was a long silence after Amy speaking, a silence in which Andy simply watched her. When that silence began to border on uncomfortable, she leaned forward. Hands slid across the table toward Amy’s.
“Can I let you in on a little secret?” She didn’t wait for an answer. “Everyone is afraid. If they say they’re not, then they’re liars. Everyone’s afraid for different reasons. And do you know what I’m afraid of? Losing you. Not in the sense of you getting hurt or dying necessarily, but this--” she gestured with one hand to Amy, then at herself “--whatever this is. With us. Whatever it could be. That’s what scares me.”
Andy mustered a smile. “So don’t close yourself off, okay? Not to me.”
