My first piece I did for @witcher-bows-and-arrows. The prompt was song. Eskel wanders into a tavern looking for a drink and is instantly taken with a certain bard
Summary:Â "Well it's coming onto 13 years together, babe
I pray that it's the luck... a lucky, lucky number
And although I know I've brought you joy and happiness, babe
I've also been a fec... a fecund resource for anger
'Cause it's all a part of the game
Yeah, it's all a part of the symphony
And I pray that your face is the last I see
On a peaceful afternoon"
- Peaceful Afternoon - Rufus WainwrightÂ
Also this fic is set in a nebulous future that is about 13 years after my fic The Art Teacher (Never Have I Loved Any Other Man). Geralt and Jaskier are in their early 40s in this fic.
Thank you to the lovely @trickstermoose67 for betaing for me!!!!

Geralt was greeted by the twang of a guitar being played when he came inside through the back door after tending to the garden. It was a common occurrence living with a musician. Jaskierâs newest album had been in the works for months now, which meant that he was working on songs whenever inspiration struck.
Walking further into the kitchen, Geralt placed the small bouquet of flowers he had picked on the table and shucked off his gardening gloves. He then rifled through the cabinets to find a suitable vase to put the flowers in.
Once the flowers were placed in the vase, he went about making tea. He grabbed two mugs, one for him and one for Jaskier. His husband was sure to have let his last mug of tea turn cold while composing.
After the water had boiled and the tea had had some time to steep, Geralt left his own mug to cool on the counter and grabbed Jaskierâs to bring it to the other man. He remembered the flowers, so he grabbed the vase as well.
With a mug in one hand and the vase of flowers in the other, Geralt made his way into the living room. Jaskier had switched from plucking his guitar to playing the piano in the time it took Geralt to make the tea. He was seated on the bench still wearing his silky floral patterned robe as he played a melody on the keys. Geralt wouldnât be surprised if he wasnât wearing anything else under it.
Geralt gracefully made his way around the various papers and notebooks that littered the floor. He placed the mug of hot tea down on the end table that was out of the way of any potential flailing limbs. He then stood behind Jaskier and placed the vase of flowers on top of the piano within his eye line.
Jaskierâs elegant fingers stilled on the keys. âYou picked flowers for me?â Jaskier asked. He tilted his head backwards, leaning it against Geraltâs torso as he looked up at him.
âThe wild roses bloomed,â Geralt said in response.
âThank you, darling. Theyâre lovely, just like you.â
Geralt hummed and leaned closer. He wrapped his arms around Jaskier and slid a hand down the deep V of his tied robe to rub his chest. âOnly for you,â Geralt rumbled.
Jaskier brought his left hand up and placed it on top of Geraltâs. Jaskier then brought Geraltâs hand to his lips and placed a kiss on his knuckles.
âDid you paint anything today?â Jaskier asked.
âNo, just tended to the garden. Maybe Iâll have to paint the wild roses.â
âJust donât actually paint on them, this isnât Alice in Wonderland,â Jaskier joked.
âVery funny,â Geralt huffed. âWild roses arenât even the same as roses.â He kissed Jaskierâs head and stepped back. âWhat are you working on?â
âOh, just your song.â
âMy song?â
âYes, the song about you for this album.â
âNot every album needs to have a song about me, Jask.â
âYes it does. You made that request over ten years agoââ
âI was just teasing you,â Geralt interrupted, âYou know I donât need songs to know you love me.â
âAnd that is exactly why you deserve songs written about you, even if it is just one per album.â
âOne per album is quite a lot with how many albums youâve made,â Geralt said bashfully.
âAnd again, you deserve them all. And itâs only fair, if you paint paintings for me, I can write songs for you,â Jaskier said as he turned around on the piano bench so he was facing Geralt.
âHmm. Howâs this one coming?â Geralt asked.
âI canât decide if it should be for piano or guitar. Iâm leaning towards guitar. There is already a lot of piano in the other songs and the guitar feels a bit more lively which feels fitting.â
âI didnât know I gave off lively vibes,â Geralt said as he backed away and took a seat on the nearby sofa.
âOf course you do, you are alive arenât you?â Jaskier asked.
âAnd youâre just being semantic.â
âWell words are my liveliâheh, heh, my livelihood. The same way paints and colors are yours. Anyway we both know I am a fecund resource for angerâoh that is a good lyric, I have to write that one down,â Jaskier said as he scrambled for a pen to write it down on one of his numerous pieces of scrap paper. Geralt didnât know how he kept track of  them, then again he did once write an entire song on paper napkins. âAnyway,â Jaskier said once he wrote down the lyric so he wouldnât forget it, âHopefully we donât need to add my semanticsm to the list.â
âWhat does fecund even mean?â Geralt asked.
âOh you know,â Jaskier waved a hand around, â....fecund?â
Geralt laughed. âYou canât define a word with itself.â
âUgh, fine, whereâd my phone run off to?â Jaskier asked rhetorically  as he shifted papers around and bent over to peer under the piano bench. Geralt watched in amusement. There was an âahahâ when he pulled his phone out from under a stack of papers that were under the piano bench.
âFecund: âproducing or capable of producing an abundance of offspring or new growth,â eh, I guess maybe not the most appropriate of words for the situation.â
âI mean, you are good at inciting anger when you want to. Or when you forget to do the dishes.â
âExcuse you, I have gotten a lot better at not forgetting and oh, oh new lyric,â Jaskier said as he grabbed his guitar from its stand within armâs reach of the piano bench. He shifted so he was straddling the bench, Geralt was surprised he didnât flash him, not that Geralt would have complained if he did.
Jaskier played a melody and jauntily sang, âBut between sex and death and tryinâ to keep the kitchen clean, remember wild roses bloom best in ruins forever after, something something, I havenât thought of the other lyrics yet.â Jaksier winked at Geralt as he set the guitar to the side again.
Geralt huffed a laugh and rolled his eyes. âHow you can think of things like that on the spot Iâll never understand.â
âAww, youâre impressed with me. Say more things like that with that look of wonder on your face and youâll surely make me blush.â
âMaybe even enough that the blush will reach that deep V of your robe, hm?â
âAre you flirting with me Geralt Rivia?â
âNever,â Geralt teased. He leaned back against the couch cushions and just kept looking at Jaskier. He wanted to look at his face all the time.
Jaskier finally stood up from the piano bench then. His knees popped and he stretched out his back before walking towards Geralt on the sofa. Geralt watched him, admired him.
Jaskier sauntered over, Geralt wasnât sure if he was trying to be seductive or if his leg fell asleep. Either way, it was endearing.
Geralt sat up a little bit as Jaskier got closer and grabbed his hand. He pulled Jaskier down to straddle his lap. The robe stretched out over his knees and the belt threatened to come undone. Geralt rested his  hands on Jaskierâs silk-covered thighs while Jaskier cradled Geraltâs face in his hands.
Geralt looked up and Jaskier traced his cheekbones with his thumbs.
âI hope your face is the last thing I see,â Jaskier said to Geralt, looking directly into his eyes, blue meeting amber. It was as if Jaskier had read his mind.
âWhen?â Geralt breathed out.
âEver. I hope itâs the last thing I ever see.â
Summary: From the beginning, Jaskier always knew his love language was a bit⊠different. His friends would hug or say nice things about each other, his sisters would gift flowers, his father would pat his shoulder with an approving look. In books and stories, there were always grand gestures and fancy words, speeches and longing looks. Words like âI love youâ and âI love you, too.â
But the first time Jaskier wants to convey just how much he loves someone, it doesnât come out with those three easy words. Instead, as little Julian, he claps his hands together and sing-songs about how pretty his mommaâs eyes are.

Jaskier's love language is song-writing. It takes a while for anyone to understand.

From the beginning, Jaskier always knew his love language was a bit⊠different. His friends would hug or say nice things about each other, his sisters would gift flowers, and his father would pat his shoulder with an approving look. In books and stories, there were always grand gestures and fancy words, speeches and longing looks. Words like âI love youâ and âI love you, too.â
But the first time Jaskier wants to communicate just how much he loves someone, it doesnât come out with those three easy words. Instead, as little Julian, he claps his hands together and sing-songs about how pretty his mommaâs eyes are.
As a toddler, heâs no great singerâ his voice wobbles and mispronounces every other wordâ but his mommaâs smiling when he rhymes sea-blue with see you , so he must be doing something right. He laughs when heâs done, crawling into her lap.
âSuch a pretty song, Julian,â she says, petting his hair. âWhatâs it about?â
His voice squeaks when he tosses his arms around her neck.
âNothing,â he saysâ too young to know why heâs embarrassed, too immature to do anything other than hide from the blush singeing his cheeks.
His momma doesnât ask again, and she doesnât mention the song, either. Itâs not the first song Jaskierâs made up, after allâ his first song was a ten-second ditty about a frog heâd found in the gardensâ but it still feels different to him.
At dinner, his momma gushes over the bows Jaskierâs sisters made for her hair.
âIâm so lucky to have such loving girls,â she saysâ and Jaskier wonders why his song couldnât say the same things those bows can.
<><><> <><><> <><><>
Itâs not that Jaskier doesnât know how to say he loves peopleâ in fact, heâs far more comfortable with it than he probably should be. His friends and family grow accustomed to the casual way he tosses the words around, as simple as saying hello or goodbye. It doesnât mean he means it any less.
But, then, sometimes, heâll meet someone for whom those words feel too little, too small. Too ordinary. And he doesnât think about it as melodies twist through his head at the sight of their smile or the sound of their voiceâ his thoughts become lyrics, and his confessions become verse.
By the time he arrives at Oxenfurt, he already knows heâs stitched together by song notes and music. He has talent and passionâ and a muse in every person heâs ever loved.
Like the blonde girl in his class with the sharpest smile. Priscilla .
He falls in love with her on the first day of classesâ how could he not? She dominates the class discussion about the merits of classical compositions versus contemporary, and she references old poets Jaskier only read because he wanted to seem smart and pretentious. Other languages flow from her tongue like she was born brilliant, and Jaskier taps a new tune against his desk as he watches her leave. Then, he catches up to her in the courtyard and introduces himself as her new favorite person. She laughs but she doesnât say no when he asks to buy her a drink.
They donât put a name on what they are, but the smile Priscilla reserves for when theyâre alone says it all.
It takes a month before Jaskier plays a song for her, though.
He knows she wonât judge him for itâ heâs taken Priscilla to enough professional performances to know she likes the romance of serenades, despite her scoffing tone at the word. But thereâs a difference between sitting beside her while she watches someone else sing, and standing before her while he does the singing himself-- not to mention the content of his song.
Still, he takes Priscilla to a place by Oxenfurtâs coast and tunes his lute. As a first-year student, Jaskierâs never performed in front of anyone outside his family; and he hasnât performed a song written specifically for someone since the failed piece about his motherâs eyes.
Priscillaâs gaze warms him, though, and he lets that guide his hands. He doesnât look at her as he sings; if he does, heâs afraid heâll expose too much of how he feels. His heart keeps pace with the melody, his breaths catching unprofessionally when he reaches the part about how her smile fits against his own. He sings metaphors about her beauty, similes about her talent and wit. Gods, heâs so obvious in his love for herâ
But, when heâs done, she sighs dreamily and asks if he writes such lovely things for all the girls.
Jaskier blinks and wonders where he went wrong with the wordsâ which part of it sounded like a song that could fit against just anyone. Just for you, he wants to say. I wrote this because of you .
The words, though, wonât come. If Priscilla doesnât understand the depths of the lyrics, thatâs okay. She likes the melody and says he has a handsome voice. She holds him and kisses him and says heâs going to be such a famous bard with ballads like thatâ but she doesnât claim the song for her own. She doesnât understand what it means.
Itâs okay, Jaskier thinks. He knows, and thatâs enough.
<><><> <><><> <><><>
Valdoâs the first person to receive a song after breaking Jaskierâs heart. Itâs a song written in rage and heartacheâ hurt and frustration that he still misses the man who cast him aside. Valdo had been his best friend throughout the final years of their studies, talking each day between classes and wondering whether either will truly achieve their dreams of becoming a master bard.
Even after Valdo sends Jaskier awayâ claiming him to be a distraction from Valdoâs goals, a silly boy who canât truly expect someone to want him foreverâ Jaskier still wishes for him. After spending so much time with Valdo, the absence hurtsâ even if, in the end, their time was only filled with insults and petty disputes.
In the void that follows Valdoâs breakup, Jaskier fills the space with music.
Itâs about Valdoâ of course, itâs about Valdo. Itâs unlike any song heâs written before, caught in that space between love and hate. Every other song had been a confession, a secret; this oneâs a story, and Jaskier writes to find the ending.
When he pens the last chord, he doesnât know if he likes the ending heâs written. Itâs not simply a story of love and lossâ itâs something more. Something so stupidly hopeful. Something that no longer sounds like I love you but, rather, I still love you.
Gods, heâs fucked.
But loneliness weaves pretty lyrics into each verse, and he wonders if Valdo would remember that time he called Jaskier his dandelion wish come trueâ Jaskier doesnât like to steal metaphors, but he likes to think he has a sense of ownership over that one, anyway. And, as he looks at the chorus and the hook, he wonders if Valdo would smile when Jaskier sings in that higher pitch he always liked, those notes Valdo could never reach quite as well.
Or, maybe, heâd just be envious and call Jaskier a narcissistic show-off. He tended to say that a lot towards the end.
Still, as hopeful as heâs always been, Jaskier carries his lute to Valdoâs favorite study spaceâ a corner of the courtyard protected by twisted trees and flowering bushes. He spies him easily, the way he always does.
And he spots the other boy seated halfway in his lap, too. He spots the way Valdo smiles at him, fawns over himâ the way his lips press to the outer curl of his ear, and how he laughs when he makes this stranger blush.
Valdoâs mouth slips over soft lyrics Jaskier only recognizes because, once, Valdo sang them to him. They werenât words Valdo had written but, at the time, it had felt like he and Jaskier matchedâ like, maybe, their special songs for special people meant the same things.
Now, though, this stupid thought shatters, and Jaskier turns away.
Back in his room, he tosses his song for Valdo in the fireâ never mind how he already has each note and chord memorized.
<><><> <><><> <><><>
When Jaskier meets Essi Daven at his first real bardic competition, he canât help but think of homeâ of the younger sisters left behind, their smiles and brilliant eyes. His heart warms and his thoughts stray towards her more often than they should. Itâs not that he falls in love with her, though; he simply grows to love her just as he would any friend. And, if he takes her under his wing with an older brother grin, he chooses not to be embarrassed.
Essie doesnât begrudge his doting. If anything, she leans into itâ teasing him fondly while coming to him for advice, holding his hands and kissing his cheek but never with the intention of anything more. Jaskier offers everything she needs, even if his advice often comes down to the two of them getting far too drunk far too often. Itâs fun. Itâs nice. Besides, Jaskier manages to remain responsible with Essi around. Sheâs youngerâ though some would make the argument that sheâs wiser and more mature to make up for itâ and she has so much good to offer the world.
When he writes his song for Essi, he panics. He tosses the papers into a drawer and paces his room, wondering if heâs fallen in love with his unofficial little sister. In the morning, though, nursing a hangover, he sighs and rereads what heâs written. It doesnât feel like a love confessionâ not like it did for Priscilla or Valdo. It simply feels like an expression of something she certainly already knows.
Although the song seems a bit overly sentimentalâ and extravagantly unsubtle, gods, he refers to her as âlittle eyeâ a half dozen times in one verseâ he canât bring himself to hide it again. He smiles as he refines the lyrics and notes. He pulls his messy thoughts into cleaner sounds, composing a song Essi deserves.
And, when Essi visits as she so often does, Jaskier barely has her through the door before revealing his masterpiece, grinning wildly as he suggests they perform it together at the next competition. She laughs and calls him a madman, clinging to the papers with her constant air of amusement; she allows Jaskier to teach her her part, allows him to sing softly about the little blue gem of an eye peeking out from a knowing face.
If Essi catches on, she doesnât mention it. Jaskier doesnât expect her toâ itâs not a confession, he knows. Itâs nothing more than a song for a friend.
As Essi lifts her own instrument and joins in, though, Jaskier stumbles over a note. He thinks of all the songs heâs written for all the people he loves. And, though he loves sharing his songs with them, he realizes: heâs never heard them sing it back.
For a moment, when Essi watches him and sings, Jaskier can pretend he finally feels seen.
<><><> <><><> <><><>
At first, Jaskier writes songs about Geralt of Rivia as the White Wolf. He writes about the legend heâs witnessing, the mythology theyâre creating.
But, somehow, without realizing it, years passâ he looks over his collection of Witcher songs and realizes he stopped writing about the White Wolf a long time ago.
No. Instead, half his songs are about Geralt just as Geraltâ hidden in poetry and pretty words. Hidden in love confessions and ballads.
Itâs more than what he wrote for Essi, more than what he wrote for Valdo or Priscilla combined. In an inn room while Geraltâs out hunting wyverns, Jaskier tugs at his hair and tries not to scream about the fact that he has based practically his entire fame upon songs about how much he loves Geralt.
He knew he was enamored. He knew there was something like lust or a crush when he approached Geralt. But, as the years went by, he thought it was admiration. Adoration. The kind of appreciation one has for a hero. Notâ Not this .
His chest pangs as he looks over his songbooks, his journals and notes. His breath catches and he doesnât dare try to count how many times heâs said he loves Geralt, or how many ways heâs said it. Sung it. Written it. Whatever.
All that matters is that the lyrics before him are about Geraltâ the songs that made him famous are about Geralt. Itâs as obvious as if heâd stood in a tavern and screamed it.
So, a crueler part of his mind whispers, has Geralt figured it out, too? He hasnât said anything, hasnât done anythingâ and Jaskierâs flirted, heâs teased and heâs tried to figure out what the witcher thinks of him, to no avail. Does Geralt know? Does Geralt even care?
Jaskier thinks of meaningless comments that mean more nowâ things like fillingless pie or the supposed insincerity of Jaskierâs songs. Maybe Geralt can sense whatâs there; maybe he just doesnât believe it.
Fine. Thatâs⊠fine. Not the first time, anyway.
Jaskierâs hands shake as he collects his songs back into his pack, breathing deeply to calm himself down. So, heâs in love with Geralt. He can handle that.
So long as heâs allowed to keep writing songs about it. Even if Geralt doesnât understand. No one ever does.
Itâs just inspiration, Jaskier will say if someone asks about the silver-haired hero of all his songs. Itâs just creative license and fiction. It doesnât mean anything.
If Geralt says nothing about it, it doesnât need to mean anything, at all.
<><><> <><><> <><><>
The fucking witchâ
The witch and her violet eyes and her hidden smile, her teases and her insults and the way she looks at Jaskier like she just canât figure him out. The witch and the way she clung to him when they met again after the mountain, the way she nearly fell apart against him.
The way she saved his life for no better reason than she knew he was in danger.
There was a song about her already out thereâ her and a kiss Jaskier knows nothing about, personally. But that was a song for Geralt, really, if one was to study the lyrics and the motivation. It wasnât a song for Yennefer.
And, as Jaskierâs healing fingers tap against his legs in a prison cell, he works to rectify that wrong.
Jaskier hums his way around tunes that feel like they could fit against Yenneferâs skin, something slow and dangerous and beautiful. He doesnât bring any words to the melody, yet; the guards have their eye out for the vanished mage, and heâd rather not go through another interrogation so quickly after the last one.
Besides, Yenneferâs always been a bit keener than Geralt. If Jaskier writes a song about her, he has no doubt sheâll pick apart the words and approach him with her weapon-like gaze.
Something about that thought excites him a tad more than it should, but Jaskier would still prefer to avoid any and all situations of possible rejection. Heâs had enough of that to last him several lifetimes.
Still, this song came into his head as they ran from those thugs together, several strings of metaphors and symbols; it slammed against his chest with a rib-crushing rhythm when he saw Yennefer disappear in the whore house, gasping as he realized the void sheâd be leaving behind.
So, here he isâ humming a new song and trying to figure out if itâs because heâs fallen in love with Yennefer. He picks through the lyrics his mind chooses, separating them between vague interest and anything that could be more than a simple crush.
With each word, he grows more terrified of just how easily he can see himself following after Yenneferâ desperate, lovestruck, a fool. What the fuck is he supposed to do with that? She loves Geraltâ and, despite everything, Jaskier knows Geralt must still love her.
Songs about those two are better for business, anyway. No one cares to hear about the heartbroken bard on the outside.
<><><> <><><> <><><>
So was Jaskier supposed to meet a fiery young princess with a witcher as a family and not write a song about her? Itâs as obvious as it had been when heâd wandered up to Geralt of Rivia in a tavern in Posada.
And, in the same way, he watches as his song shifts from being about her to being for her. A series of lyrics that sound like a father to a daughter, a promise to protect her even if he canât always stick around.
Of all his confessions, this one strikes him the hardest. Heâs not Ciriâs fatherâ adopted or otherwise. At best, he plays the role of the uncle who hangs around her true parents far too often. To pretend otherwise would be selfish, and he canât do that to the family Yennefer and Geralt are creating for her. What does he expect, anyway? To play a tune about how precious he thinks Ciri is, and hope theyâll welcome him into their perfect trio with open arms?
He knows how that ends, and so he tucks the songâs true meaning beneath his tongue, pretending he sings of inspiration and nothing more. He pairs it with his catalog of witchers and sorceressesâ never anything that could reveal his heart.
Still, he writes about the princess and the strength of her soul. He writes about his hopes for her futureâ more than prophecy and heroics, but happiness and love.
He writes about everything she isâ and everything more she will be.
<><><> <><><> <><><>
Kaer Morhen and the wolf witchers are everything Jaskier could have ever imagined and more. When Geralt finally gets around to introducing Jaskier to everyone, Jaskier can barely contain his glee.
Of course, the witchers seem less excited to meet him. If anything, they go out of their way to ignore him. He doesnât blame them, exactly; heâs a strange human in this mysterious witcher keep, and theyâre still recovering from Voleth Meirâs attack. They hardly have time to fake any joy or welcome for him.
And, bit by bit, they start to open up.
It starts with Eskel, the first to answer Jaskierâs questions when they bubble over at dinner or breakfast. Lambert and Coen ignore him with rolled eyes, but Eskel offers soft responses with a smile that brightens his shy face. Vesemir, then, joins in to correct whatever Eskel might get wrongâ small details about monster habits or potion ingredients.
Itâs not until Eskel tells his story of a rather fascinating encounter with a succubus that Lambert finally breaks.
âAlright, then,â he snaps, falling into the bench across from them. âIf weâre telling stories, let me give you something actually worth hearing.â
From there, the rest simply follow along.
It almost hurts, the sudden urge to write about every story they share; Jaskierâs hands have yet to fully heal, and his luteâs lost somewhere on Oxenfurtâs docks. Itâs for the best, he knowsâ he canât go popularizing details about these witchersâ private lives just as theyâre beginning to trust him. Besides, thereâs only one real muse for him.
Still, songs appearâ and, maybe, he shouldnât be so surprised when, one day, he looks down at an idea for a song that practically calls these witchers his family.
They are, though, he realizes. He trusts them and adores them and he loves them. And, even if they may be a bit awkward at showing it, he knows they feel the same for him.
He never wrote a song like this for his birth familyâ there were small snippets of melody that spoke of moments where they made him feel safe enough to say such silly sentimental things, but never anything so certain. Is this what family feels like? Is this what it means to be wanted in return? When he looks at his witchers, his chest warms with the understanding that heâs supposed to be here.
And, so, maybe heâs supposed to write a song about how wonderful that feels. Maybe, like fate, the bard was brought to the keep to immortalize this sensation forever.
Itâs terrifying, though, when Lambert claps him on the back and leans over to ask who the new songâs for.
âNo one,â Jaskier squeaks, just as embarrassed as he was when his mother asked the same thing all those years ago. âDonât worry about it. It doesnât mean a thing.â
<><><> <><><> <><><>
As predicted, no lack of lute was going to keep Jaskier from performingâ even if itâs just for a group of grumpy witchers in a freezing keep. Jaskier makes a habit of jumping to his feet after dinner every few evenings, keeping time with his spoons as he dances through the tables and collects the few smiles theyâre each willing to grant him.
âItâs okay to enjoy yourself. I wonât tell,â he teases, and he laughs when Lambert and Coen protest the idea of ever enjoying his singing.
âBard,â Lambert calls one evening. His crossed arms and overdramatic scowl give away the embarrassment he has over Jaskierâs latest melody about the Red Wolf. Even the way he calls Jaskier bard carries a gentler tone beneath the gruffness. Nearly all witchers, it seems, have a difficult time admitting if they like someone. âIs there a specific reason you write so many damn songs for so many damn people?â
Jaskier pauses, the world slipping beneath his feet for a moment as he considers a question heâs never really been asked before. Despite the fame his songs have received, few people dare to ask about more than the validity of the White Wolfâs adventures. Itâs nothing he hasnât already thought of, thoughâ the answerâs the same as the one about âwhoâs this one for?â No one. Nothing. It doesnât mean a thing.
Butâ
Beneath the surface of performance, he wants to tell them the truth. He wants to tell them everything, the songs heâs hidden and the reason why he canât let anyone hear. He may not have been ready before, but he wants to be ready now. The time heâs spent here and the warmth they bring to himâ shouldnât he let them know? Even if they canât understandâ even if no one ever does? Isnât it worth saying?
The confession, though, sticks in his throat and he doesnât know how to say it without breaking.
âItâs how he shows he cares,â Geralt blurts outâ thoughtless, casual. Like he hasnât rocked through Jaskierâs very core with those few words.
Jaskier stills, staring at Geralt from across the room. He sits by Yennefer beside the fire, the two previously discussing Ciriâs trainingâ Jaskier hadnât known either of them had been listening. Geralt glances back at him, a strangely tender look upon his face; he watches Jaskier like heâs just realized what heâs said, and the nerves are settling against his skin. Heâd almost look apologetic, if not for the way he smiles reassuringly.
Jaskier blinks. Geraltâs words pierce through his mind once moreâ Itâs how he shows he cares.
No one, ever, has been able to say it so simply. No one has ever seen or known or understood. But, Geraltâ Geralt says it like itâs easy. Like itâs obvious. Like itâs something heâs known all along.
Jaskierâs heart swells, so suddenly and so fully heâs not certain heâll be able to speak. âHow did youâ?â
âItâs obvious, isnât it?â Yennefer asks. âYouâre the one who always says your writing comes from the heart.â
âItâs what youâve done ever since we met. Iâve watched you write dozens of songs for the people you care about,â Geralt adds. âNot all of your songs are like that, but most of them are. I didnât notice, at first, but it starts to get hard to miss when the Path becomes nothing more than you, me, Roach, and your music. Itâsâ Hmm. Itâsââ
Ciri turns next, eyes as brilliant as ever when they fix on Jaskier.
âIâve never met anyone who loves as many people as deeply as you do,â she gushes without hesitation. âItâs beautiful .â
Geralt nods, and Jaskier looks back into endless gold eyes.
âYou put all of yourself into your music, Jaskier,â he says. âAnd, sometimes, it sounds likeâ it feels like youâre sayingââ
âI love you,â Jaskier says, his head spinning and his palms sweating as all eyes turn back towards him. âI love you all so much.â
Geralt and Yennefer share a look; Ciri grins at the two of them like sheâs won some unspoken bet.
At last, Yennefer raises an eyebrow towards him and moves over on the couch sheâs sprawled across.
âThen get over here, bard,â she says. âYouâve been saying it for years. Let us say it, too.â
And, gods, was it always going to be this simple?
Jaskier sets aside his lute and all but runs to join them, jumping half out of his skin with Yennefer drapes an arm across his shouldersâ when Ciri leans against his leg, seated on the floor, or when Geralt brushes Jaskierâs ankle with his foot, shyer than Jaskierâs ever seen him.
When the three smile at him, Jaskier realizes heâs never felt quite so content in his entire life. If he had known it could be like this, he would have never hesitated to share his songs with those he loves mostâ those who, somehow, love him in return. A thousand new songs spring through his mind, though he fails to imagine when heâll ever have time to write them; he fears he doesnât have the strength to pull himself away from this one spot between a witch and a witcher and their magical daughter at his feet.
âAnd you just now tell me,â he jests as the other witchers leave the room, offering them the space they need to figure their feelings out. âWeâve wasted so much time not saying what we mean.â
âWeâve all been saying it,â Ciri argues, pinching his calf teasingly. âBut no one wanted to admit they heard it. Youâre all terribly insecure, the lot of you.â
Well, Jaskier canât deny that. But thereâs more to it than any of them can fully see, he knowsâ histories and backgrounds that, maybe, one day, theyâll all share and learn.
For now, he settles among the three and revels in the feeling of coming home.
In the following days, they all share many intimate and vulnerable conversationsâ gods know they needed the space to explain their own love languages and experiences with being misunderstood in those areasâ and Jaskier could cry at each word he gives and receives. As he learns more about these people he loves, he canât help but feel another song blooming within his chest.
Heâll write them all the best song. A song about a witcher and a witch, a princess and her powers. And, maybe, this time, thereâll be a bard involved in the lyrics, too.
âYou were almost killed.â Kiss. âBecause of me.â Kiss. âAgain.â Kiss. He took the bardâs skin gently between his teeth, right above the long line of muscle in his neck.
âYes, well,â Dandelion replied, voice rising an octave, âI wasnât. I know youâll always protect me, often to your own detriment.â
