Just finished the first part of season 3 of The Witcher and I've got to say, the editing for this season was... not good. It felt kind of like a school project.

ngl i wanna write a post about how ciri’s styling in s2 (the seeds of which were set in s1) robs the relationship between she and geralt of some of its messy, undignified initial charge, with a spoiled and terrific kid lashing out at an emotionally dysfunctional but ultimately deeply loya/kind witcher. their vivid imperfections fit together just right but just.........barely exist in the show.
i understand why they style ciri older given how much they have her moving on her own in s1, but her hilariously drawn on brows in s2 premiere & general s2 'pretty 20yo fantasy princess' styling largely makes their plot in s2, to be frankly, exceedingly hollow and generic imho
picking a much younger actress to play yennefer was already a no from me but now they've also decided that yennefer herself is YOUNGER than geralt on the show and not by a small amount. oh and let's not forget how she's constantly sexualized because why the hell not!
it was already a yikes for me when i realized the actress is only FIVE (5!) years older than ciri's actress (i mean, she's supposed to play her MOTHER, folks!) but making decisions that completely go against everything in the books is legitimately so strange to me
It astounds me how awful are models of main heroines in The Witcher 3. Like, it's the game with a marvelous Tomira and a girl whose fiance got eaten by wild dogs that has a big crooked nose and a plump body, and on the other hand it's oversexualized Yennefer and Ciri that look like plastic anorexic barbie dolls that fight on high heels. It's crazy and disgusting. At least Geralt looks normal so I don't have to watch constantly how a ferocious warrior runs like a dainty little girl in a dress
I feel like I need to keep repeating this, but I really did genuinely enjoy the Witcher show.
But the more I think about it, the less I like TV!Geralt.
Geralt in the books and the games was very gruff and dour, but underneath he had a well of kindness and compassion. Esp wrt to kids, women, and every kind of lesser mistreated person -- human or non-human.
I didn’t really... get that vibe from show Geralt. He was just sort of a jerk, lol.

I’m in a weird place with the Witcher right now. The golden glow of the series is wearing off and I’m seeing the one glaring issue I have with it more strongly- That Jaskier is queer coded without being confirmed queer, and that Geralt treats him like shit. Like it’s not actually funny to have Jaskier’s supposed friend treat him so roughly when he’s actually dying, to have so little care that he’s dragging him around by his collar when he’s choking rather than just carrying him. Or if he does carry him, it’s not the way you carry a friend. You carry a friend either bridal style if you have the strength, which is most comfortable for them, or you give them a piggy back. Throwing Jaskier over his shoulder isn’t going to help the breathing situation. I like Jaskier, a lot, actually. I get the sense that he’s quite different in the books, more of a straightforward womaniser which isn’t as... entertaining tbh.
But I tried the first chapter and... the writing is really bad. Maybe it’s the translation but it’s so very amateurish. Very ‘teenage boy writes his first super cool OC.’ Not to say people can’t enjoy them! I just can’t get into that sort of writing style. So I’m stuck. I hope the Netflix series addresses this, I hope Geralt’s time with Ciri softens him up enough that he actually treats Jaskier well.
Because shipping aside at the moment it just reads like big strong manly Geralt can’t treat the foppish queer character with anything remotely like warmth, because that would mean he approves. And we can’t have that.

When I talk about Witcher 3’s diversity issue I’m not even talking about it’s main cast I’m talking about how every single background character is white
And since I apparently have to write this now to avoid being yelled at, I don’t think the game is bad!
The male character designs are awesome in the Witcher 3--craggy, burly, tattooed, chinless, rock-jawed, jowly, scarred, barrel-chested. Meanwhile, every significant female character in the Witcher basically looks like a Barbie doll.
