#witch title

Okay so people who identify as a certain type of witch like ‘green witch’, ‘tech witch’, ‘storm witch’, ‘hedge witch’ etc. are all just witches. These extra labels are to help other people identify/understand a person’s interests and/or focus of study.

I’ll give you an example: I’m a witch, but because I specialise in weather magic, I call myself a weather witch. I do however use other types of magic in my practice. I use herbs, bones, stones and blood. I use sigils, runes and circuit boards. I use string, candles, woods and metals. These are only a few of the materials/subjects my practice covers, so technically (if I wanted to), I could identify as any of these types. 

Your ‘witch type’ lets other people know whether you are tied to a particular faith and what your focus of study is. It’s a bit like how at university you pick a major and a minor. These are the areas your degree is focused on - the same applies to witchcraft titles. 

So to answer your question of how you find out - Ask yourself ‘what fields in witchcraft interest me?’. Then you just start learning as much as you can about that topic until you can practice aspects of that topic with confidence. There is no obligation to take on a label. You only need to take on a label if you’re comfortable with it. If it doesn’t feel right then don’t use one. You can simply identify as a witch.
