somewhere in the end we're all insane | amber & gray
Amber was stuck in the last week of term questioning whether or not she was going to make it to the school ball. It sounded exciting, and something so normal in terms of the highschool experience. She wanted to experience it. But wanting didn’t always override anxiety. Amber had come to question whether she should just tell Viv to go alone. Even if she couldn’t make herself attend, at least Viv could have some fun there, right? Viv could dance with Scorpius, or maybe even Kali, though Amber was envious simply at the idea of it.
A more distracting question came to mind as Amber turned the corner on her way to the Gryffindor Tower. Why was there a thestral inside the castle? Seriously, why the fuck??? The poor thing was probably hungry, cut off from the forest where they were regularly given raw meat by Hagrid. Having been introduced to the creature in her fifth year, before dropping Care of Magical Creatures, Amber had some familiarity with thestrals. She kind of liked them, more than most of the creatures they were shown. Perhaps it was simply because they matched her dark aesthetic, but they weren’t all that bad.
The corridor was currently empty, but for her and the lone thestral. Amber reached out a careful hand, slowly approaching the creature so as not to spook it. The thestral sniffed her hand, before she was able to gently pet the bridge of its’ nose. “There we go,” she cooed. “I’m not so scary, am I?” Unlike humans, Amber felt zero anxiety talking to animals. She added a second hand, scratching under the thestral’s chin. “How did you get all the way up here?” she asked it, as if she would get an answer.
