Grace didn’t know how long he’d been asleep. Maybe three hours? He could still feel Rocky’s xenonite ball against him as Mary spoke up again. He must’ve fallen asleep watching the Eridian sleep. 

“Anomaly detected. Evasive maneuvers recommended.” 

He sat up, eyes straining as they adjusted to the brightness of the now lit sleeping quarters. Strange. He’d never heard the computer speak that warning before. 

“Anomaly detected. Evasive maneuvers recommended.” It repeated. 

“Mary, what-” He groaned, rubbing his eyes behind his crooked glasses. 

That’s when the alarm started blaring. The same, loud, red alarm signal that rang out when the taumoeba leaked. Rocky wasn’t budging, so Grace pried himself from the comforting warmth of the xenonite, alarm bells now ringing in his mind. The computer words echoed in his head, processing just what it meant. 

“Anomaly detected. Evasive maneuvers recommended.” 

“Yes, yes Mary, I hear you.” He said, pushing himself off the cot, trying his best to get the ladder so he could reach the cockpit. What the hell was Mary on about?

The alarm kept blaring, Mary repeating the same words over and over. Anomaly detected. Evasive maneuvers recommended.

By the time he pulled himself up to the cockpit, Mary had started rattling off the distance to whatever this “anomaly” was. The ship was getting dangerously close to something Grace couldn’t even place yet and he tried not to panic as he felt the ship sway. He frantically threw himself onto the pilot seat, not bothering with a seatbelt as he turned the engines on manual. 

“Okay Mary you’re gonna have to be more specific here, what the heck am I looking at?” “Unidentified anomaly approximately 380,000 kilometers away.” 

Okay great. He was now an Earth to Moon distance away from the thing which meant if it had any type of gravity bigger than them, with the speed the ship was going at, they’d get sucked into its orbit quicker than he could say “dideoxyribonucleotide.” Now obviously this was the worst case scenario, but Grace had developed a sort of panic-first assess-later state of mind. 

“Unidentified anomaly approximately 350,000 kilo- Engine cutoff.” 

He cut the engines as quickly as he could, Mary coming to a quick stop as he swivelled the seat to face the Petrovascope. 

“Where am I looking Mary?” He mumbled to himself. He and Rocky were a year into their two year trip to Erid, and they’d never encountered any issues. They were just passing by the Mizar and Alcor system when Mary freaked out. Nothing should be out of the ordinary, and yet... 

Grace located Mizar, the biggest star in the binaural system. Nothing out of the ordinary. Sunspots, solar flares, solar winds. All normal. Anyways, Mizar was too far away to be the anomaly Mary was warning against. Alcor was even further so he didn’t even bother turning the scope to it. With a huff, he turned himself around. Nothing. Just space. No nearby planets or stars close enough to be the anomaly. Weird. He turned slightly, scanning the expanse of emptiness. 

“What the-”
