A snow day means soup day! This is a vintage recipe Iāve been trying to write about on the blog for the past month but the words just arenāt coming together. Itās a vintage recipe from Dean & Deluca, the famous NYC grocery store thatās been a part of the city since the 1970s but as of the past couple of years has struggled to survive. š
In its heyday, Dean & Deluca was the best grocery shopping experience in Manhattan. And the prettiest. Known for their super high-quality artisanal products sourced from around the globe it was where all foodie lovers went. Their aesthetic, a mix between farmhouse, industrial and minimalist was created decades before those interior styles ever became trendy and heralded a store modeled after European markets and accented with art gallery inspired lighting. š It didnāt matter what you were buying at Dean & Deluca.... mushrooms, a box of macaroni, a quart of milk... everything looked like art. Alas, such beauty did come with a price. If you didnāt want to fork over an entire paycheck on just two bags of groceries, a nice compromise was a treat from their cafe style fresh food counter located in-store. šŗ There, on a cold winter day tucked in between bouquets of winter branches and blooming amaryllis, you could sit for hours with coffee, sandwiches, baked goods or a cup of soup like this one - Pasta E Fagooli - made from all the products they offered in store. š
Unlike shopping at Dean & Deluca this is not an expensive soup to make at home, yet it retains all the qualities that Dean & Deluca stood for. Quality ingredients, comforting food and a hint of elevated flourish - in this case, the use of a cheese rind for extra depth . š§ Prople say that when Joel Dean, one of the three original founders, passed away in 2004, that the heart went out of the grocery and the brand struggled to keep the original intentions of the store going. Understandably, you canāt easily replicate someoneās lifelong vigor and passion. Luckily though, we can easily replicate this soup which does help keep memories of the D&D spirit alive.
