Aún sigo pensando si alguna vez Insomnium ha defraudado con sus trabajos discográficos. Hmmmm… No. La verdad que no.

I was wondering if Insomnium had ever let us down with any of their albums. The truth is...they haven’t.

Con una carrera que comenzó en el año 1997, los finlandeses han trabajado duro para dejar su propia huella en la historia de la música y asimismo, crear su marca registrada. Ya con 7 álbumes de estudio bajo la manga, la banda originada en Joensuu, ha tocado el máximo esplendor y se ubica en las primeras posiciones como una de las bandas más importantes, no solo de Finlandia sino también del género death metal melódico (aunque todos sabemos que parte de sus raíces provienen del doom metal).

Their career started in the year 1997, and since then this finnish band has worked hard to leave their mark in music history, and create their own trademark. With 7 studio albums, the band from Joensuu has reached its highest splendor and it is groupes among the most important bands, not only in Finland, but also in the Melodic Death Metal genre (though we all know their roots come from Doom Metal)

Podemos decir que Insomnium se ha adaptado a las exigencias del mercado de la música sin mañas y siempre, pero siempre, respetando su sonido tan original que los representa y los hace únicos. Su antepenúltimo trabajo fue «Shadows Of The Dying Sun» (2014) el cual ha llegado a importantes puestos en los charts mundiales (especialmente en Finlandia, donde consiguió llegar al puesto Nº2); así que, si han pensado que este último disco ha sido una bestialidad, con el nuevo trabajo se van a volver completamente locos (y enamorados).

We can say that Insomnium has adapted to the demands of the music market with no trouble, and they have always stayed faithful to their own original sound, which represents them and makes them unique. Their antepenultimate work, “Shadows Of The Dying Sun” (2014), has reached important positions in the world music charts (specially in  Finland, where it reached number 2); so, if you think this last album was phenomenal, you will fall madly in love with their new production.

Como ya se habrán dado cuenta, Insomnium se ha convertido en una de las bandas especiales que más admiro, formando parte de mi cultura musical (especialmente en el heavy metal), y es por eso que estuve esperando por este lanzamiento desde el primer día que lo anunciaron. «Winter’s Gate» es lo que uno llama, literalmente, una obra maestra. Sí, y sin exagerar, porque realmente lo es.

As you may have already noticed, Insomnium has become one of the heavy metal bands I admire the most, and that is why I’ve been waiting for this release since the first day it was anounced. “Winter’s Gate” can undoubtedly be considered a Masterpiece. Yes, without overstating it, because it really is!

Para comenzar, «Winter’s Gate» es un single con una sola canción de 40 minutos de duración que resume y revive una pequeña historia escrita, ni más ni menos, que por el bajista y cantante de la banda. Fue creada en el año 2007 por Niilo Sevänen, quien además de ser un músico con todas las letras, es un destacable escritor que actualmente participa en la organización de eventos culturales relacionados con la historia y literatura de su país natal, y ha ganado premios de literatura en Finlandia en los años 2007 y 2008.

To begin with, “Winter’s Gate” is a single, with a 40-minute long song, which summarizes and revive a little story written by no other than the bass player and singer of the band. It was conceived in the year 2017 by Niilo Sevänen, who besides being an exceptional musician, is an outstanding writer that currently takes part in various cultural events related to the history and literature of his country of origin. He won literary prizes in 2007 and 2008.

En resumidas cuentas la historia habla sobre un grupo de vikingos que viajan hacia una isla, que para ellos era ficticia, pero que en realidad existía al oeste de Irlanda. La aventura que viven te atrapa en cada capítulo. El final es algo totalmente inesperado.

In short, the story is about a group of vikings who travel towards an island, which they thought didn’t exist, but actually existed near the western part of Ireland. The adventure they experience gets us hooked in every chapter. The ending is completely unexpected.

Volviendo al álbum...

Lo que más admiro de este nuevo disco es el riesgo que corrieron al romper con todas las estructuras normales de composición y salir a jugar con todo de una buena vez.

Pues, ¡lo lograron! En el álbum no solo escuchamos ese perfecto death metal melódico, sino también sonidos black y progresivos que resuenan y contrastan entre sí, en la atmósfera doom. ¡Belleza!

Going back to the album…

What I admire the most about this album is the fact that they took such a risk by changing the normal structures of composition, giving it all at once.

Well, they’ve made it! In this album we not only listen to that perfect melodic Death Metal, but also to black and progressive sounds, which resound and contrast with each other, in a doom atmosphere. Sheer Beauty!

Como dijimos, «Winter’s Gate» es una sola canción de 40 minutos de duración, pero cada atmósfera está bien definida, por lo que podemos decir que se divide en 7 partes.

He escuchado el disco mientras leía la historia como para encontrarme más dentro de su concepto y poder vivir la aventura a través de varios sentidos. De todas formas, y si así lo deseas, puedes optar solo por escuchar la canción, ya que su instrumentación te adentra en la historia de tal forma que no necesitas leerla antes para saber de qué se trata.

As we said, “Winter’s Gate” is a 40-minute long song, but each atmosphere is well-defined, and thus we can say it is divided into 7 parts.

I’ve listened to the album as I read the story, in order to dive into its concept and be able to live the adventure through many senses. Anyway, if you want to, you can choose to only listen to the song, because its instrumentation takes you into the story, with no need to read it beforehand to know what it is about.

Los primeros 15 minutos son muy extremos. Ahí escuchamos a Insomnium como debe y suena desde siempre. Markus Vanhalla, guitarrista, es en mi opinión, un factor importante e imprescindible para darle vida a esta historia. Es más, creo que nunca antes lo había escuchado tan glorioso. Sus riffs son magníficos y épicos. Único, como pocos, Markus se encarga de dar el presente con su estilo tan original mediante melodías y solos que muy rara vez hemos escuchado anteriormente en Insomnium (lo cual es increíble). Los ambientes más melódicos y acústicos son realmente hermosos. Niilo aporta voces limpias muy lindas y melancólicas.

The first 15 minutes are very extreme. In that part we listen to Insomnium as it has always sounded. Markus Vanhalla, guitar player, is (in my opinion) an important and determining factor to give life to the story. What is more, I think he has never sounded this glorious before; his riffs are magnificent, and epic. Unique, as only few can do it, Markus displays an original style through melodies and solos we have rarely listened to in previous Insomnium works, which is amazing. The most melodic and acoustic atmospheres are really beautiful. Niilo contributes clear, pleasant and melancholic vocals.

Cuando la puerta del invierno realmente se abre, es cuando la cosa se pone áspera. No solo en el libro sino en el disco también. Te vas a dar cuenta cuando este evento ocurre porque es muy notoria la transformación atmosférica que se produce en la canción: el sonido va ascendiendo desde la calma total de unas guitarras acústicas y voces limpias (punto aparte para estas divinas voces limpias de Sevänen que me han dejado enamorada. ¡ESA VOZ!) hasta llegar a un punto muy pesado y peligroso.

When the winter’s door really opens, things get ugly, not only in the book, but also in the album. You will notice when this happens, because there is a very notorious transformation in the atmosphere of the song: the sounds goes in crescendo, from the complete calm of some acoustic guitars and clear vocals (it is worth mentioning how divine Sevänen’s vocals are, I love that voice!) until getting to a very heavy and dangerous point.

Still I bear the flowers of pain, of solitude

En esos minutos realmente me sentí en el lugar de Asbjörn caminando contra viento y nieve. Creo que la atmósfera densa, pesada y melancólica que han creado, te hace sentir que estás totalmente perdido en el medio de una tormenta de invierno, caminando sin rumbo y sin saber qué hay detrás, adelante o a tus costados: el peligro en su máxima expresión.

In those minutes I really felt I was in Asbjörn’s place, walking against wind and snow. I think the dense, heavy and melancholic atmosphere they’ve created makes you feel that you are completely lost, in the middle of a winter storm, wandering without knowing what’s around you: danger at its finest.

Void of direction... void of hope... I call her name... in the whiteout...

Voy a remarcar los guturales de Niilo, ya que hacía mucho que no escuchaba growls de esa talla: duelen como si te estuvieran cortando, o duelen de tanta desolación y miedo. ¡Wow, tiene talento para hacerte sentir parte de la historia! La atmósfera doom es impecable.

I want to highlight Niilo’s guttural sounds, because it has been a long time since I last listened to such good growls: they hurt as if you were being cut, or maybe because they reflect so much fear and devastation. Wow, they are talented enough so as to make you feel that you are a part of the story! The doom atmosphere is flawless.

- Cada tanto llamaba su nombre, pero fue en vano. Solo se escuchaba el rugido del viento respondiendo. Una o dos veces, pensé que escuchaba voces en la ráfaga de nieve, pero debí haberlo imaginado. Luego, pensé que vi algo. (ASBJÖRN) -

Every now and then, I called out her name, but it was useless. Only the roar of the wind answered me. A time or two, I thought I heard voices in the flurry snow, but I must have imagined it. (Asbjörn)

Los últimos seis minutos son épicos. El ascendente y escalofriante riff lo marca todo: el invierno ha vuelto. Tal y como se vive en las últimas páginas de la historia, todo llega a su fin. Tenemos todos los componentes de Insomnium en su máximo nivel e interpretación.

The last six minutes are epic. The rising and chilling riff marks it all: Winter is back. As it is told in the last pages of the story, everything comes to an end. We see all the elements of Insomnium at its highest level and at its finest interpretation.

Adoro que los pasajes de un personaje a otro también se encuentren en la versión instrumental de la historia. Aún más cuando Síne se hace presente desde los últimos tres minutos del disco. Quebrantadora melodía entre un piano y una guitarra acústica, y muy por detrás Sevänen relatando: “Sing a quiet song to me. Sing of Spring and sing of sea.”

I love the fact that the changes from one character to the other are also found in the instrumental version of the story. Even more when Sine makes its appearance for the last three minutes of the song. An utterly moving melody with a piano and an acoustic guitar, and far in the background  Sevänen narrates: “Sing a quiet song to me. Sing of Spring and sing of sea.”

- Fue bueno en la oscuridad. Fue seguro en la oscuridad. Estaba caminando por un pasadizo sosteniendo a Neasa en mis manos. Neasa me cantaba una tranquila canción sobre la primavera. El “ojo triste” estaba gateando por detrás nuestro. El era muy alto para nuestros pasillos . (SÍNE) -

- It was good in the dark. It was safe in the dark. I was walking along a passageway and holding Neasa in my hands. Neasa sang a quiet song about the spring to me. The sad-eyed one was crawling behind us. He was too tall for us halls. (SÍNE) -

Ya no hay más excusas para decir que Insomnium no se ha superado, porque en verdad lo han hecho. Y debo decir que «Winter’s Gate» es ahora, uno de esos trabajos que uno debe escuchar sí o sí en la historia del heavy metal. De ahora en más, quedará entre los must have junto con «The Black Album» (Metallica), «Black Sabbath» (Black Sabbath), «Screaming for Vengeance» (Judas Priest), y muchos más.

El disco del año ha llegado.

There are no more excuses to say Insomnium have not outdone themselves, because they truly have. And I must say “Winter’s Gate” is now one of their best works, it is an album which should be included among the must have, together with “The Black Album” (Metallica), “Black Sabbath” (Black Sabbath), “Screaming for Vengeance” (Judas Priest), and many others.

The album of the year has come.
