Here are some of the mistakes that people commit when it comes to layering:

Too Many Layers!

Okay, 4 layers to protect yourself from the cold is good, but not if you don’t really need it. Unfortunately, many people make this mistake.  Sure, it’s freezing cold when you arrive at the trailhead, but as soon as you feel that your body can produce heat, you might just be wearing too many layers for your own good. You will likely soak your base layers with sweat!  This places you at higher risk of hypothermia.

So, remove layers as soon as you start feeling hot. Don’t just sweat it out!  By the time you take off the top layers, it might be too late.

Wear Clothing Made of Cotton

Cotton is quite comfortable next to the skin in ideal conditions.  Cotton, however, absorbs moisture.  They also tend to dries up slowly. Make sure to avoid wearing cotton outdoors in winter. Layer up with synthetic clothing or wear merino wool for base layers. These materials can keep you warm and dry. These things are definitely worth the money.

No Face and Neck Gaiters

When hiking or doing some outdoor activity in winter, you need to wear a base layer, a mid layer and an outer shell.  You also need to wear a hat and a pair of gloves. But that is not all.  You also need to wear face and neck gaiters to protect your neck and face. This will keep your face warm against the cold biting wind. These are inexpensive, but they make such a huge difference to your level of comfort.

Wearing Big Heavy Thick Jackets

People think that a large heavy thick jacket is enough to keep them warm.  That can definitely work for a short outdoor activity like commuting or watching an outdoor game.  But if you are planning to wear a bulky jacket for a winter hike or snowshoeing, you will likely freeze to death or overheat when conditions start to change. Right layering is always your best bet.

Non-Waterproof Boots or Footwear

We’ve written about this before. You need to keep your feet and toes warm.  This means using waterproof footwear. You need to keep your core warm, and this means keeping your feet dry and cozy. Make sure to use waterproof boots and use boot gaiter as well.

Wear one wool sock instead of using several cotton socks. Merino wool tends to pull moisture away from your skin.  Cotton tends a while to dry up. One wool sock can do the trick. It can definitely keep you warm.
