@wingsofbadass I don't even know where to begin! I'm not gonna pretend I'm like deeply intellectual abt it bc most of my thoughts on the matter are 'WOW I love Jane fairfax' and not much more but!
she is the perfect foil for Emma and austen addresses this explicitly. Jane Fairfax is, in all intents and purposes, the stereotypical Austen heroine: she is well-mannered but has a mind of her own; ill of fortune and fate. Emma was written to be so exactly apart from all other Austen heroines that I don't think it's any coincidence that Jane Fairfax is named after Austen herself: I think it's a joke, a self-acknowledgment of Austen's predilection of protagonist. We only ever see Jane through Emma's eyes and Emma thinks of her as simpering and frustrating: an accomplished woman. Emma is envious of her, but I don't think it's any reach to say that Jane is envious of Emma too, for Emma has everything Jane wants: social and financial security, openly adored by all. Jane is tossed around in the novel by her companions and relies so much upon the wellbeing of others that she has very little agency of her own, yet we know from her intellect that she is conscious of this and from our understanding of other Austen heroines we can recognise the inner turmoil that might have been explored had it been a different novel, and she states plainly when she is afraid she is destined to become a governess how difficult it is for her to exist within her narrative.
If Emma had been written from Jane's POV, I think it would be painful: more similar to Persuasion than any other work, because she is spurned, ridiculed and reduced (sometimes unconsciously) by those she trusts most. Her story isn't a comfortable one and I absolutely loathe Frank Churchill (Emma x Jane Fairfax retelling WHEN) (also sidebar but I once read an essay that argued that Frank Churchill killed his aunt and I've never been able to stop thinking abt it since) but because it is Emma's story, at the end it is resolved with the two of them reconciling their differences and ostensibly becoming friends.
Anyway I find her fascinating. Her every moment in the novel tugs at my heart strings and I have genuinely cried when I think about her because I love Jane Fairfax so much. I don't really have a concrete conclusion but I do think it's incredibly cool that Austen arguably included her as a way to analyse the way we perceive Austen's traditional heroines and given that, we have a better understanding of how Jane Fairfax probably perceives the world around her.
But yeah. Basically, I ❤️ Jane Fairfax
edit: I have never watched an adaptation of Emma that satisfies me when it comes to Jane Fairfax. The 1996 movie with Olivia Williams is too quiet, too composed at all times. The 2009 miniseries (which is my fav Emma but) makes her kind of silly. The 2020 version reduces her entirely to her relationship with Frank/Knightley and does not explore her relationship with Emma enough. Again it makes her seem like a lady who is a fool in love and in the novel I never, ever get that impression. Yes, she loves the most annoying man. But she is consistently aware of the consequences of this and handles it like a CHAMPION. poor Jane. She deserved so much more.

Hey, we seem to have a similar taste in books! Do you have any recs for romance with poc? I'd love you forever!
These are the ones I can remember right now. ▪ Losing the Field by Abbi Glines (moc). ▪ Honor (moc) & Dignity (woc) by Jay Crownover. ▪ Kick Push duet by Jay McLean (woc) (disability) (tw: suicide attempt). She’s releasing a new duet, Heartache, and based on the edits I saw, the main girl looks poc. ▪ The Problem with Forever by Jennifer L. Armentrout (moc). ▪ Touch of Fondness by Joy Penny (woc) (disability). ▪ Nothing Personal by Karina Halle (woc). ▪ Most Likely to Score by Lauren Blakely (woc). ▪ Scandalous by L.J.Shen (moc). Her next released Broken Knight will have a woc mc. ▪ Wait for It by Mariana Zapata (woc). I think she has another book with a woc mc. ▪ In the Dark by Monica Murphy (woc). ▪ Lillac Town series by M. Hollis (f/f, woc). ▪ Hideaway by Penelope Douglas (moc). ▪ Drunk Dial by Penelope Ward (woc). ▪ Arranged by R.K. Lilley (moc). ▪ The Impossible Vastness of Us by Samantha Young (moc). ▪ Overnight Sensation by Sarina Bowen (moc). Don’t get fooled by the whitewashed cover. Jason is described with brown skin from the first book and on. ▪ The Shameless Hour by Sarina Bowen (moc). ▪ Bennett Mafia by Tijan (moc). ▪ P.S. I Hate You by Winter Renshaw (moc). Kennedy Ryan has a lot of books with poc main characters. Elle Kennedy’s The Play will have a woc mc. if you want the fantasy books, just tell me and I’ll add them. @matthewdeclermont has some great book recs. you should go thought her tag /book recs.
