F: Care to share a favorite hurt/comfort fic?
I apologise - I was stuck on this, not reading much pairing-fic, so my brain started going meta about the way fanfic is such a vector for processing issues of pain and healing. It’s genuinely wonderful - so I guess you can add that to my answers about “favourite tropes”. HTDC really quickly became a story about this stuff - there’s a note I made, early on - “fix->change->grow->heal” - and you can especially see it playing out in the chapters with those title words. Though I’m not immune to standard hurt/comfort tropes, either.
While I was thinking, though, I thought of a less pretentious answer - @mongoose-bite writes the best short-form smut I’ve ever read, including some wonderful h/c stories, like this Skyrim one. The level of plot in them varies, but what’s always there is 100% character, and a genuine authorial love and respect for everyone involved. It’s filthy smut, and it’s *so fucking pure, you guys*

Am I the only one who get the fucking fear, every time I read a post that starts “I hate it in stories when...” just in case it’s a thing you yourself have done??Because I doubt it, and I don’t wanna do that to people. Aside from the genuinely damaging ones, all tropes can be used well, if the writing is good. Take the linked fic above - it’s got “trapped in an ice-storm, have to naked-snuggle to survive!” How much trope could a trope-fic trope, if a trope-fic could--- and it’s FANTASTIC. Fight me.

Thanks, I wasn’t sure if it’d work. (still not, tbh) Because I have no illusions that I could do justice to a decently cryptic and godlike Sermon-era Vehk. But then, he’s not that person, he’s cut off from the Heart and old and tired, and can’t go among his people as he used to. But maybe he has enough energy to remember an earlier self, to serve a purpose, it might be amusing… only to remember why he fucking hates remembering that person.
I saw that Iriel's birthsign is the Tower. When he's invisible, does that make him the SECRET TOWER?!?! Haha, lore jokes! (PS love the story a lot!) (PPS was he dangerously close to zero-summing?)
Haaaah. Trying to remember where I talk much about Ire’s birthsign, actually, I don’t think it’s even in the text at all? And while I like the idea that astrology is Serious Business in TES due to cosmology being magical physics, I’ve not done anything with birthsign-powers, I’m ignoring that. But I think in Summerset, having your horoscope calculated and regularly checked is at least as important as medical checkups. Probably more.

PPS: Heh. Again, zero-summing isn’t mentioned in HTDC. While some writers do it really well, I think my story’d just get bogged down, if I filled it with explicit TES metaphysical godknowswhat, not to mention I’d have people telling me I was Getting It Wrong.
That said, I may have muttered about Iriel and zero-summing elsewhere. Mainly to fend off any theories that his condition might involve CHIM. Because every discussion of TES lore will eventually involve CHIM, sigh. Anyway, no. He reads a lot of Vehk, but he’s just a twentysomething fuckup who cast chameleon too much. (Whereas Vekh was, um… ok, never mind, moving on.) But, yeah, no. At most, Ire has a milisecond-long flash of borrowed-divine creative inspiration. Even to call what he almost does zero-summing is to cast it too heavily in Lore Terms, it’s far less specific than that. Just closer to to that than to CHIM, I guess.
tl;dr: Any hard-lore theories projected onto silly gay elf fic are done in your own time, and entirely at your own risk. The Management takes no responsibility (but enjoys watching, and wondering what else people will notice and/or invent!)
