Wine Genius, I have a silly question that may be presumptuous. Many years ago I had a red wine from Oregon (pinot maybe?) and, I swear, the aftertaste was similar to cocaine. Or, when one rubs cocaine on one's gums. Is this a kind of wine thing? Is there a name for this taste which is not "cocaine aftertaste"? It was super smooth, too.

Ah this is an awesome and interesting question that I’m not entirely sure how to answer because god knows I don’t know what cocaine on the gums tastes like *snicker*
But no. Um. I’m trying to consider what kind of flaw that would be. It IS a flaw. I think I know what you mean. Almost metallic? Tinny even? Medicinal?
It MAY have been an over production of Brett (or Brettanomyces) which is a wild strain of yeast. While it is often common, and welcome, in many wines (in moderation) it can and does sometimes get out of control. In balance it produces a distinct aroma and palate distinguished by bacon-fat, barnyard, tar and leather (most often seen in Burgundian and Rhone wines which, in fact, are unique for these notes) however if it infects a vineyard and reproduces out of control you can tend to find aromas (and therefore notes on the palate) of bandaids, socks, creosote and burnt organics.
That’s what it sounds like to me, or at least that’s my best guess, especially given that it was an Oregonian Pinot Noir which tend to be produced in a much more Burgundian style than their Californian counterparts and therefore much more likely to have initially had Brett introduced intentionally (or at the very least not freakishly eradicated) only to have it accidentally get out of control.
Which would likely also explain why the wine was still cohesive and balanced and rather good, despite this flaw.
