Within most societies are conflicting views about how members should behave towards those we don't see eye to eye with. Personally, where I am, I'm very open to being friends with people of all walks of life. I think we all have a lot to learn and we can be very positive influences on each other. I'm secure enough in my own faith and critical thinking that I don't believe I'm going to be seduced or brainwashed by some bright sounding but ultimately false concept, and I love hearing other people's ideas and discussing them. Often, one of us somehow modifies our previous belief, in light of a new explanation that seems more sensible. I love this growing process.
That doesn't mean that everyone is interested in exposing themselves to controversial company the way I am - and I don't think that makes me superior. Everyone has their own reasons and their own strengths and weaknesses and I have no way to know what is most healthy for them. For example, I'm not very emotional about looking at pictures. I could see a graphic photograph of a grisly crime scene and, most likely, not think about it for more than half a minute and completely forget it ever existed within days. For some people, the same photo would really upset them. Fair enough. Why then, shouldn't they be encouraged to protect themselves from that emotional distress? I think this same concept extends to many different aspects of life - and it certainly extends to Tumblr. I follow a VERY diverse crowd of people. People who have polar-opposite viewpoints from me and each other - Christians, atheists, nihilists, existentialists, extreme left-wing people, extreme right-wing people, people who are very pro LGBTQ rights and people who are very against them, people who enjoy and use drugs and people who would be aghast at the idea, you name it, and I've probably befriended or followed someone of the description at some point in my life - and if I haven't, chances are I would if given the opportunity.
