Northwestern University's efforts to make windows safer for birds (including Painted Bunting) circulating in newspapers across the U.S. today. We’re proud to have assisted. The work will benefit Painted Bunting, one of the species found by Chicago Bird Collision Monitors as a window collisions victim, and dozens of other birds. At the Museum, almost all the windows have a 3 inch frame with netting over it to prevent the birds from hitting the window. The one exception is the front door. Unfortunately this female American Redstart saw the reflection of a forest in the glass door and crashed into it. Luckily, after a few minutes she recovered and was able to fly off. We added a few more things to the door to break up the reflection. There are currently decals, informational signs, and old CDs. It has been estimated that collisions kill a billion birds a year. There are many ways to prevent these collisions.
