#wind damage

Me and my banana are out surveying the wind damage from this afternoon.

Overall, the yard didn't get too messed up. Aside from Hass avocado getting knocked down and banged up, most other damage was light. I started by returning all the pots I moved back to their original positions and putting the umbrellas back.

Hass had two small branches that broke off, which is better than I was expecting.

They did take out half a palm frond and bent up part of a octopus agave. Which is fine. Everyone involved will recover with a bit a trimming this week.

Strike It Rich rose did suffer quite a bit. The wind toppled them bit didn't pull them out is the ground, which is good. I was able to prop them up with a brick (my tried and true method lol) and in a few days I'm going to trim them down pretty short so that they aren't as top heavy until the roots dig back in. I didn't want to stress them out too much today because between the wind and today's ridiculously high temps, nothing is happy.

I gave all the plants a very heavy watering. High winds dry soil and plants out, so I needed to water today regardless. And because of the extreme heat (we're in the upper nineties today despite it only being March), I also filled the ollas under the trees and in the veggie patches.

Ollas are a great way to help reduce the frequency of watering in dry conditions. They're terracotta jars or pots with lids that are buried up to their necks and filled with water. The water slowly seeps out into the soil benefiting the roots over time. I added them in last year and they've definitely helped a bit.

Lost a window on my porch, so now we’re scrambling to find someone to fix it or replace the porch (frame got shifted during the storm as well.

I had no power for a full day, one sibling was out for 2, and mom was out for about 5.

I know I’m lucky in regards to the damage - no trees fell on mine or my family’s houses or cars, but still …
