to most people, derek machado just a name - he's a footnote in niklaus mikaelson's checkered history, if nothing else. to klaus, derek would've been an unintended variable.
to maia and ethan machado, he's their estranged uncle.
to their mother, sheriff cora machado, he's an estranged younger brother.
(to tripp cooke, he must have been a murderer. ditto for tripp's wife, kriss.)
to me, he's my sire, and a deeply, deeply haunted man. because i don't know what i would have done if a mikaelson and a salvatore sauntered up, up and into the place i made my home and then proceeded to rip it all to pieces for the sake of what basically amounts to a science experiment.
and don't get me wrong, i love a good experiment, and if things hadn't gone the way they'd gone, i wouldn't be here right now.
but when we met, in the cemetery of maple hollows, he'd been in so much pain. the kind of pain you wouldn't want to wish on anyone. not even on your worst enemy.
it was like i was watching something i had no business watching. it was private. it was personal. or at least, it was supposed to be.
and i know this is going to sound silly, coming from someone who literally wants to know all the things and wants to see all the things to glean knowledge from said things, but some things truly aren't meant for certain eyes.
even before i got turned, i felt like he was giving me a sneak preview of the one part of vampirism that i will never be comfortable with: the part where i lose the people i love. to the hands of time. to violence. to... whatever or whomever takes them out of the world.
much like my sire, i'm going to look like this forever. but unlike my sire, i didn't get turned during the worst day of my life.
that part came afterwards.
