“Turner on Varnishing Day” by William Parrott, 1840. Turner was notorious for making a spectacle of himself on varnishing days at the Royal Academy. Varnishing day is a day before an exhibition opening intended for artists to make little touch ups or add varnish to their paintings. Instead, Turner would show up with a blank canvas and would then paint an entire painting on the spot. This work is part of the amazing Thomas Cole exhibition at the Met #williamparrott #turner #jmwturner #varnishingday #royalacademy #metropolitanmuseumofart #oilpainting #thomascole (at Metropolitan Museum of Art)
