Not surprisingly, White Christian Nationalists need a “usable past,” a history that comports with their understanding of America as a divinely ordained nation that was from the beginning rooted in the Christian faith.

For all his bluster about the Bible, Ken Ham doesn't really quote it that much.

The Trump Administration issued an executive order entitled “Ending Radical Indoctrination in K-12 Schooling,” which has as its goal to end “federal funding or support for illegal and discriminatory treatment and indoctrination in K-12 schools, including based on gender ideology and discriminatory equity ideology.” As regards the teaching of U.S. history, the 1776 Project – established by the Trump administration in November 2020 and terminated by the Biden administration the following January – is reinstated, its goal being to produce a “patriotic education” that presents “an accurate, honest, unifying, inspiring, and ennobling” treatment of American history that makes clear how “the United States has admirably grown closer to its noble principles,” and that promotes “the concept of America’s greatness and history is proper.” Such an approach to America’s past will end the day when students “feel guilt, anguish, or other forms of psychological distress because of . . . actions committed in the past by other members of the same race, color, sex, or national origin, in which the individual played no part.”   In other words, with Trump’s  federal mandate fragile white males can finally feel good about themselves again!

The “conversion formula” insists, of course, that God devised his plan of salvation because he loves and wants us to be with him forever. It also assures us that God continues to love us even after we reject his plan of salvation. But if we happen to die before we’ve changed our minds, then he sends us to a hell of constant, unbearable pain. This translates as: God shows us his eternal and unconditional love by rejecting us if we reject him – by sentencing us to unspeakable agony and declaring that he has no further interest in us.

It is because of these concrete recommendations and my honesty (“personal candor”) in reporting what has worked, and has not worked, in my own efforts to orchestrate respectful conversations that Richard Mouw, in his Foreword to this book, suggests that it will treat the reader to “the practical character that is often missing in studies of civil discourse.”
