“It’s more about when you come back from being out somewhere; in a minicab or a night bus, or with someone, or walking home across London late at night, dreamlike, and you’ve still got the music kind of echoing in you, in your bloodstream, but with real life trying to get in the way. I want it to be like a little sanctuary. It’s like that 24-hour stand selling tea on a rainy night, glowing in the dark. It’s pretty simple.”

Streetlands - Burial (2022, Hyperdub) having emerged from the dubstep, UK garage and grime scenes, William Bevan had advanced himself into a soundscape maverick. He's managed to push the boundaries as a critically acclaimed artist, while keeping a low-profile. As a follow up to Antidawn earlier this year, an ominous atmosphere, which has been likened to the mood-shifting of a video game soundtrack, Streetlands digs deeper, (no pun intended) into paying homage to the greats, if you are listening carefully. The high pitch vocal on the title track seems to hint at something a bit more modern, however, it stands out strikingly as a bright gaslight or streetlamp on a dark street.
Burial emits a mesh of both urban and field recordings, stacked up against an overlay of surface noise ambience. Sometimes iced with vocals, and subtle rhythms, which may or may not fully materialize, but just enough to find the beat. He utilizes the entire spectrum of sound, to suggest an environment to be dipped into and wrap yourself in.
Furthermore, Burial is recreating the analog experience through the traditional art of sampling, the complete opposite direction of what a lot of the EDM producers do with their EDM stock filters, such as enhancing bass digitally on dance tracks for cheaper, less state-of-the-art sound systems. (EDM can be distastefully produced as it stomps all over history and squashes all of the various genres together into an automatic fast food audio sandwich, an insult to the history and culture) This process in EDM tracks is often achieved through the use of lackluster digital software, which diminishes the natural production process. The comparison of these two polar opposites reinforces the musicianship Streetlands is trying to convey, the flux of the electronic music experience, which is really the experience of sound altogether.
