St John Sessions 2014

In 2013, one of the best London music series we discovered was the St John Sessions, an organisation created to promote and host the finest contemporary music. Held in the St John Church in Hackney, it’s acoustics and voluminous space helps create a special experience for both performer and viewer.

Recently, we came across the St. John Session’s 2014 programme of events (there’s 10 of them planned) and we have to say we’re quite excited! Next month, the church is playing host to Ryuichi Sakamoto & Taylor Deupree, Roly Porter, Gareth Dickson, and in June, purveyors of good music will get to experience the hyperdub delights of Laurel Halo.

But the event we are most looking forward to is happening on the 20th March where the church of St John opens its doors to William Basinski. If you’re not already familiar with Basinski, he’s a multi-talented avant-garde composer (like most of the St John roster of acts) who is based in the USA.

He is widely known for his four-volume album The Disintegration Loops which were pieced together from rapidly decaying twenty-year-old tapes of his earlier music (play the video above). Since the’70s, Basinksi has been pushing the boundaries of ambient music, building upon the music directions originally defined by visionaries such as Brian Eno, John Cage, and Steve Reich. In his upcoming performance, we’re very curious to see his latest explorations in sound.

Incidentally, fellow music veterans Rhys Chatham and Charlemagne Palestine will also share the evening with Basinski.We have to admit that we are always looking for different styles of music than what one is normally accustomed to hearing, and these acts along with promise to provide just that.
