‘ you need rest. ’

     ❝ & i promise you, i do intend to retire before the sun rises. ❞

     HER INTENTION HAD been to go to bed hours ago, in fact, but she’d felt far too restless. after far too long of staring out into the darkness, she finally admitted to herself that sleep wasn’t going to come easily that night, & she slipped out to sit underneath the stars.

     SHE WASN’T THE least bit surprised when link came outside to join her only a few minutes later.

     ❝ i suspect it’s all the resting i did after the–––– after we returned. ❞

     THE FIRST FEW days after leaving the castle were a bit of a blur. exhausted, she had slept almost through several days all at once before she could manage to stay awake for short periods of time, & even then it took a few more days before she could stay awake from morning to evening.

     ❝ i should think there would be some side effects to sleeping day in & day out in such a way. but, without knowing anyone else in the same situation, it’s impossible to say for sure. ❞

     &, SOMEHOW, ZELDA found that she was okay with that. though she attempted to avoid outliers, in this case she was alright with being one.

     HER HAND PATTED the ground beside her, & she sent a gentle smile in his direction.

      ❝ you are more than welcome to join me. the sky is exceptionally clear, & it’s easy to see the stars. ❞

     THEN, SHE WAS reminded of the late hour, & drew her hand back to lace with the other in a soft hold.

the smile he gives wild is sad,   and wholly understanding   ‒   what he wouldn’t give to see a certain woman’s smile again.   twilight recalls the days spent bounding through overgrown grass in a ruined kingdom,   following wild in his four-legged form as the younger hero sought to free his princess from her century-long battle.   this trial,   with the nine of them,   will be no different in that wild will be greeted with her sunny smile once again when it’s all over.   twilight will make sure of it.

he places a strong hand on wild’s shoulder,   feeling the uneven,   scarred skin beneath the fabric of his tunic.   he knows he’s adopted a bit of a big brotherly role in the group   ‒   no doubt because he’s so used to being the big brother back in ordon   ‒   and this gesture,   he thinks with amusement,   serves proves that point.   he doesn’t mind.   wild has been like a little brother to him for a good while,   anyway.

      “ Well-- ”       A wave of his wing,  subtle  indication for the knight to have a seat by the dying embers of the flame he’d been cooking with. Revali may not be entirely pleased to be in Link’s presence, let alone  accompanying  him back to Castle Town, but it seems his opinion on the matter is rendered moot by the Rito Chieftain’s request.

                                  However, he was not about to starve along the journey. 

         Revali had taken the time to collect some salmon from the river, seasoning them with some goron spice gifted to him. Roasted over the fire to perfection, he’d taken the liberty of doing up some fresh vegetables he’d plucked along their journey as well.

‘ why are you bleeding? ’

     THE FRANTIC TAPPING on the screen of the slate suddenly stopped, & zelda’s gaze rose, watching link for a moment as the words sunk in. bleeding? where? she followed his eyes, her hand reaching up to press against her cheek. instantly, she could feel the soreness that had seemed to evade her a moment ago, her her fingers had spots of red against her skin.

     ❝ oh! ❞

     IT WAS CLEAR that she was surprised, & she set the slate aside entirely to reach for her pack, searching for the medical equipment she brought along. as minor as it seemed, it needed to be taken care of, it was a lesson that she had learned well as they travelled.

     ❝ while you were setting up camp, i took the opportunity to fill up the compendium a bit more. ❞

     THERE WERE STILL several things missing from the list, most of which they would have to do more travelling to find. the insects were particularly difficult, darting away when you finally made it close enough to get a clear picture, so when zelda had stumbled upon a rugged rhino beetle, she had taken the chance.

    ❝ admittedly, i was a bit too energetic, & slipped, falling down that hill that i was perched on. ❞

     ALREADY ANTICIPATING HIS concern, she rose both hands, continuing quickly.

     ❝ it wasn’t a big hill! i’m fine. i didn’t even notice i was hurt until you pointed it out. ❞

     SHIFTING FORWARD ON her knees, she grabbed the slate again, forgetting her injury entirely as she quickly switched to the compendium to show off her handiwork.

and so my muses decided to pick him up high like simba because my god that is one tiny hero. pocket-sized hero. smol hero. ready to stab

‘ you’re allowed to be angry . you’re allowed to feel whatever it is that you feel . ’ 

     THOUGH SHE HAD long changed out of her prayer dress, her fingers & toes still felt numb, though they had long warmed from the cold of the spring. this was a different sort of chill, one that had nothing to do with the temperature of her surroundings, & more to do with the gloom that settled in her heart after each failed visit to the springs throughout hyrule. a biting chill much worse than the springs.

     HER APPETITE HAD long vanished, despite how hungry she had been upon first entering the spring. the meal that link had prepared smelled delicious, but even it was not enough to reignite her lost hunger. still, it was a useful distraction, something to focus on while she felt like the world was too heavy on her shoulders to lift her head.

     SILENCE HAD SETTLED in like a blanket over them, & so his voice startled her, as evident by a small jump of surprise. her head finally rose, meeting his gaze from across their small campfire.

     ❝ whatever it is that i feel. ❞

     THE SENTIMENT WAS a kind one, though she was having trouble separating her feelings. was she truly angry? if she was then who was it directed towards? the goddess? her father? herself? was it simply a crushing disappointment? was it an acceptance, an understanding that this was just the way things would be? she didn’t have a proper answer.

      ❝ i’m afraid that even i’m not entirely sure what it is i feel at the moment. ❞

      & YET, IT felt like a weight had been lifted. as if just getting permission to feel–––– whatever this dark & gloomy feeling might be–––– was enough to ease the burden of her dormant power. & that was a relief, even if it was only for the moment.

     ❝ no matter what it is i might be feeling, my present company is of the utmost help. ❞

     HER FIRST SMILE since she had stepped into the spring finally spread across her face, her posture straightening as her mood began to improve. her voice quieted, her gaze softening.

    ❝ thank you, link. ❞

     WITH THAT, HER mood was temporarily appeased, the cold defused by the warmth of his presence. for a few moments, she would allow herself not to think of her resting birthright.

im probably gonna go all over the place but lets go.

1. twil and wild’s first meeting though. like honestly? I would love to see that interaction. just wild messing around with the slate. and then?? suddenly??? a wild twilight appears? GOD. honestly though. i have my own headcanon about the sheikah slate and how it summons twilight. but honestly? i would also like to mess around with it too? like what are your thoughts about it? does wild summon him? or do you have other theories about it? honestly there are so many ways to bounce this around but still. I can imagine wild just being like ‘oh shit oh shit oh shit.’ and twilight is just a big ‘UUUUUGGGGHHHH.....’ but still. I’m sure that first interaction/meeting is definitely a crazy one for sure. and you know what? imagine the interactions after that too?? like. im not sure how you would take it. but i know twi would have mixed feelings with wild at first.
