I love watching birds and picking up on little behaviours. These tūturiwhatu at Tāwharanui were having baths in a stream coming down on to the beach, and once they were done they would scoot off a little way and then do a quick jump/flutter to shake the rest of the water off. After watching a few do the same thing, I could anticipate what this one would do, and capture the moment! Pāpango / New Zealand Scaups are pretty good looking ducks. I’ve always thought they look like rubber duckies going through a goth phase... The waters around Sulphur Point in Rotorua are white, milky from all the geothermal activity. Auckland Island flightless teal are a species that will really benefit from the eradication of pigs, cats and mice from the main Auckland island (Maukahuka) the only one in Aotearoa’s subantarctic region that still has introduced mammals. The teal are endemic to the islands and are commonly seen on Enderby, which is pest free and a haven for all of the endemic species in the group.
