Hi! I've recently been considering getting a newt: I fell in love with them during my herp classes in college but only recently have been in a stable enough place to really consider one. I see you've got yours in a 20 (long if you updated as planned?). Is that the minimum size you'd recommend? I've had some people tell me a 5g is suitable but that seems overly small. Also, do you have some species suggestions for a beginner? Thanks!
That really depends on the species of newt and how many you have! I would consider this as a general rule: If it's 3" and under, it can fit in a 10gal. If it's 4" and over, it demands a 20gal or larger! So if we're talking firebellies a 10gal is the smallest I'd do for 2-3 newts.
Also, my firebelly will be in a 20long eventually, but is not at this exact moment!

How do you keep Violet so clean?? I've had my Tyrande for a few weeks and she just gets so dirty so fast!
I honestly don't know! She stays cleaner than Horatio, lol--it seems like Horatio's tail feathers are always filthy. I do give the budgies a spray bath in their cage every week or two, and Violet really seems to enjoy it, but I don't know if she bathes on her own in the water dish when I'm not home (I've never seen her), or if she's just meticulous about her appearance.

I have only had male budgies before until my work got in a little white hen (identical to Violet!) who was so well behaved for a pet shop bird that I had to have her. She's young so I wasn't positive she was a hen...until she started destroying everything in the cave and giving my boy a lot of gruff. (:
We had the same issue with Violet! I was about 75% sure she was a hen when we saw her in the budgie bin, but it wasn't until we were transporting her home and I stuck a finger in the travel case and she bit me hard enough to break the skin that I was like, "OKAY YES PRETTY SURE THAT'S A HEN WE'VE GOT THERE." I love budgie hens. They're such cute little handfuls. :D
