         ❝   nezuko’s  refusal  to  consume  human  flesh  —  and  ability  to  survive  without  it  —  is  unheard  of.  i  wouldn’t  have  believed  a  demon  like  her  could  exist,  had  i  not  witnessed  her  protect  tanjiro  with  my  own  eyes.  she’s  proven  herself  to  be  resilient  and  incredibly  strong - willed,  much  like  her  brother  —  she  was  able  to  resist  shinazugawa’s  attempts  to  goad  her  into  attacking  him,  and  has  even  gone  on  to  conquer  the  sun,  a  demon’s  greatest  weakness.   ❞   giyuu  pauses,  a  shuddering  breath  escaping  his  lips.  he’d  scarcely  dared  to  hope  at  the  time  that  the  kamado  siblings  might  prove  to  be  the  catalyst  of  change  humanity  has  been  waiting  for,  but  by  now,  it  seems  an  undeniable  fact.  as  if  the  invisible  cogs  of  fate  have  finally  been  put  into  motion,  they  stand  closer  to  the  eradication  of  demon’s  than  they  ever  have  before.  he  closes  his  eyes,  willing  away  such  fanciful  thoughts.  until  their  victory  is  within  their  grasp,  there’s  little  use  in  pondering  on  the  what - ifs.

          drawing  in  a  deep,  steadying  breath,  giyuu  reopens  his  eyes  and  continues  calmly,   ❝   despite  what  she’s  suffered  and  how  lonely  she  must  be,  she’s  .  .  .  kind.   ❞   she  reminds  him,  distantly,  of  his  own  sister,  giyuu  realises.  gentle,  patient,  full  of  love.  no  matter  what  life  threw  her  way,  tsutako  always  put  others  first  and  smiled  through  her  pain,  right  up  until  the  day  she  died.  he  wishes  he  had  even  an  ounce  of  her  strength,  that  he  could  offer  kindness  to  others  as  readily  as  she  once  had,  as  nezuko  now  does.

          giyuu  quickly  shuts  the  lid  on  the  wave  of  warm,  painful  memories  that  threaten  to  spill  out  of  the  strictly  maintained  box  he’s  kept  them  in  for  so  many  years,  lips  pressing  into  a  thin,  sorrowful  line.  while  his  words  are  gentle,  with  a  firm  air  of  finality  he  says,   ❝   i  hope  i  live  long  enough  to  see  her  become  human  again.   ❞

                ❝ you know, it’s a huge relief being able to see you in the sunlight again, nezuko. ❞

    The golden adorned slayer sat quietly in the darkened room. The other’s had fallen asleep easily, but he couldn’t get himself to rest his eyes, despite being exhausted. Sparing a glance at his snoozing companions, heavy thoughts began weighing down on him before he slouched forward in his designated futon. 

    Feelings of insecurity and doubt taunted him, reminding him of instances that made him shrink in discomfort, and provoking negativities concerning any notion of a future he might grasp at. Tired eyes fixed on his hands, twirling a blue-eyed grass bloom gently. A sigh escaped him. He was so lost to his own cognition, that he didn’t notice when the girl approached him. Only when she cupped his face delicately did he blink up at her. It took him several moments, but he finally registered her presence, the edge of his lip twitched and his features warmed gently.

    The words that escaped her... He was certain she wasn’t speaking of the flower in his hand.. Her gaze was fixed on his own. He.. was the flower..? She thought he was good?? It suddenly occurred to him that she was trying to comfort him, and that he was noticeably moping. That being said, he felt a tear roll down his cheek, and his expression abruptly scrunched up, betraying him and reeking of his overwhelming despondence.

    The remark, little as it may seem, MEANT THE WORLD TO HIM. It was genuine, and the sound radiating from her entity seemed sad, but loving.. Concerned. Leaning into her touch, he dropped the delicate bloom and raised a hand to cover that belonging to her. Despite finding himself unable to vocalize it, his eyes sparkled with gratitude. She.. They.. Cared for him in tender ways he’s never experienced. Ways he’s always desperately longed for. And it helped ease away the pain and anxiety he felt.. The uncertainties that branded his thoughts and painted reality in a disturbing light. He loved them so much. They were his family.

          when  tanjiro  next  awakens,  aching  and  disorientated,  his  limbs  heavy  with  pain  and  bone - deep  exhaustion,  inosuke,  the  butterfly  estate  girls  and  gotou  are  nowhere  to  be  seen.  his  mind  still  groggy  with  sleep,  tanjiro  glances  blearily  about  the  small,  darkened  room  he’s  likely  been  occupying  since  he  was  rendered  comatose  for  two  whole  months  in  the  wake  of  the  gruelling  battle  against  the  upper  moon  six  demons.  it’s  neat.  sparsely  furnished.  at  least  half  the  size  of  his  old  family  home.  with  idle  curiosity,  his  gaze  is  eventually  drawn  to  the  makeshift  shutters  that  have  been  constructed  over  the  sole  window  in  the  room,  the  wooden  panels  to  block  out  the  even  the  harshest  rays  of  sunlight  .  .  .

          a  sudden,  gut - wrenching  realisation  dawns  on  him.  a  burst  of  adrenaline  surges  through  his  veins,  chasing  away  the  lethargy  fogging  his  mind  as  he  bolts  upright  in  bed,  uncaring  of  the  sharp  flare  of  pain  that  lances  through  his  side  with  his  erratic  movements.  white  spots  dance  in  his  vision  as  he  reaches  out  with  weak  and  trembling  fingers,  his  voice  no  louder  than  a  painful  rasp  when  he  struggles  to  voice  his  sister’s  name,   ❝   nez  —  !   ❞

          his  throat  constricts,  cutting  him  off  mid - sentence.  tanjiro  doubles  over,  coughing  and  retching  against  stiff  bed  sheets  pooled  around  his  thighs,  tears  gathering  at  the  corners  of  his  eyes.  amidst  his  coughing  fit,  he  vaguely  registers  a  dull  thump  from  somewhere  across  the  room,  followed  by  the  scuffle  of  socked  feet.  a  clawed  hand  appears  in  his  blurry  line  of  vision,  accompanied  with  a  soft,  familiar  hum.

        ❝   nezuko  .  .  .   ❞   tanjiro  croaks  as  his  coughs  finally  subside.  he  raises  his  head  to  look  at  her,  a  sob  of  relief  clogging  the  back  of  his  throat  as  nezuko  draws  closer,  bright,  concerned  eyes  blinking  back  at  him.  slender  brows  pinch  into  a  frown  as  ever - gentle  hands  reach  up  to  cup  his  battered  face,  muffled  huffs  of  worry  escaping  from  behind  her  bamboo  muzzle.

          guilt,  ugly  and  dark,  blossoms  behind  his  ribs.  has  she  worried  over  him  every  day,  waiting  for  him  to  wake  up?  has  she  been  lonely?  surely,  zenitsu  and  inosuke  would  have  spent  time  with  her,  but  that  does  little  to  ease  the  black  stain  on  his  conscience  .  .  .

          tanjiro  smiles  weakly  as  nezuko  steps  closer  and  gently  guides  their  foreheads  together,  clawed  hands  stroking  his  bruised  cheekbones.  in  an  effort  to  assuage  her  concern,  tanjiro  lifts  a  bandaged  hand  from  the  knot  of  sheets  beneath  him,  running  his  fingers  over  her  ebony  hair  in  soothing,  repetitive  motions.   ❝   i’m  sorry  i  made  you  worry,  nezuko,   ❞   he  whispers  softly,  his  eyes  falling  shut  as  a  wave  of  exhaustion  washes  over  him.   ❝   i’m  okay  —  your  nii - chan’s  okay  .  .  .   ❞

“Nezukoooo!”

    A voice some might be as bold as to call delusional, drowned by infatuation and melody rang from outside the door. The blonde, who was usually spellbound by panic, eagerly announced his presence following an afternoon of materialistic debauchery before swinging the entrance open to greet the girl, basket in hand carrying concealed items. Of course, he wasn’t typically a materialistic person, but this wasn’t for himself, after all ( actually.. in a way, it kind of was.. ) Skipping inside he held out the basket for the girl to take, a stifled t i t t e r escaping him as he did so.

“I thought I’d pick you up a couple of things from the market!! After all, you look soooo boooored all the time!”

    He all but sang, before his expression changed, darkening fast enough to induce whiplash, stating the perceived injustice with a scowl.

“It’s CRUELTY!! An unforgivable, relentless, cutthroat, and blatant attack on your rights!! You shouldn’t just be stuck in purgatory with nothing to do all day!! Nobody, especially you, should have to suffer a fate so torturous—!!”

    And just like that, his flowery lighthearted energy resumed once more, practically visible as it radiated off him, decorated with flowers and a few gentle sparkles as a less restrained giggle bounced from his vocals.

          the  stammered  attempt  at  what  he  assumes  to  be  his  name  is  met  with  an  impassive  blink  as  he  gazes  at  the  young  oni  seated  before  him,  freed  from  the  bamboo  muzzle  he  once  crafted  to  aid  her  in  keeping  any  demonic  urges  in  check.  the  kamado  siblings  have  changed  so  much  since  he  first  discovered  them  on  that  mountain  several  years  ago,  their  shared  existences  an  irrefutable  catalyst  for  change  that  started  as  mere  ripples  upon  the  water’s  surface.  only  now  they  leave  waves  in  their  wake,  powerful  enough  to  shake  the  very  foundation  of  all  that  they  know,  oni  and  slayers  alike.  powerful  enough  to  stir  the  water  at  the  feet  of  kibutsuji  muzan  himself.

          he  can  scarcely  comprehend  his  own  quiet  relief  that  these  siblings  have  yet  to  fall  victim  to  the  cruel  fate  he  and  so  many  others  before  them  have  succumbed  to.  like  the  sun,  they  rose  hand  in  hand,  bringing  with  them  an  end  to  the  long  and  dark  night.

         ❝   .  .  .   ❞

          giyuu  reaches  out  across  the  distance  between  them,  a  sudden  flare  of  uncertainty  cutting  his  would - be  movements  short  and  leaving  his  palm  to  hover  awkwardly  above  her  small  head.   he  stares  at  his  own  hand  in  mild  confusion,  the  space  between  his  brows  puckering  with  a  frown  as  he  slowly  lowers  it  to  rest  atop  nezuko’s  dark  crown  of  hair.

         ❝   .  .  .  giyuu  is  fine  .  .  .   ❞   he  murmurs  softly  after  a  moment  of  hesitancy,  gently  moving  his  hand  back  and  forth  in  a  stiff  imitation  of  her  brother.  it’s  an  action  he’s  witnessed  tanjiro  offer  to  those  closest  to  him  on  multiple  occasions,  but  with  such  limited  experience  in  the  art  of  affection,  giyuu  has  no  true  understanding  of  how  it’s  supposed  to  work.  but  he  remembers  —  even  now,  despite  the  dull,  lingering  pain  that  comes  hand  in  hand  with  his  thoughts  of  her,  despite  the  years  that  have  passed  and  the  thick  layer  of  ice  that  has  formed  a  wall  around  his  heart  —  how  comforting  it  felt  when  tsutako  used  to  stroke  the  top  of  his  head  in  the  moments  before  he  drifted  off  to  sleep.

          giyuu  inhales  quietly  and,  for  the  first  time  in  years,  he  lets  the  turbulent  river  of  emotion  raging  behind  the  walls  of  his  heart  run  its  dreadful  course.

          They’d just been out in the Butterfly estate’s garden, picking and selecting flowers generously to make a colorful arrangement.. A smile plastered itself on normally tense features as the two chatted vaguely, Zenitsu sharing a new flower name here and there whenever they came across a new one.. And suddenly, a brilliant shade of pink erupted across his features at the words that left Nezuko.. Of course, in no way did he expect the comment, however he was nonetheless flattered ( as well as taken completely off guard with an ungraceful sputter ). 

“ H-Huh?? ”

          A hand, formerly holding a bloom raised to cover a red tinted cheek. His companion didn’t talk frequently, so to receive a compliment simply felt extra special, and he couldn’t help the plethora of giggles that escaped him immediately after. 

“ Ehh?? Nezuko?? You think so??  Well.. That’s funny because I think smiles look even better on you——!! ”

          Smooth.. Super smooth.. He nailed it..
