Apparently they don't anymore :(

Do you know if there is there a reason for this? Are they hard to keep? Aren't they allowed to be moved from their original country? Considering the fact they are not kept anymore I think they couldn't be successfully bred in captivity and zoos usually strive not to take animals out of wild populations anymore, I guess these seals were replaced by other aquatic mammals, or birds.

(I just saw Zoos in Japan keep them, but distance of original habitat is not the main concern for a Zoo afaik.)

Interesting question! I don’t actually know the answer (and was unaware there were any Baikal seals in human care until I received this ask 😅), but I imagine you’re probably on the right track. Unnecessarily collecting animals from the wild is generally frowned upon these days, and for good reason. If a species doesn’t reproduce well in zoos, it’s difficult to maintain a population, and considering the Baikal seal’s IUCN Red List status is stable at “least concern,” people probably aren’t jumping to establish a captive breeding pool.

Do you use a special lamp for your GloFish? I thought they were fluorescent and glow like a coral or are they actually just normal bright in your pics? In Germany they only sell those abominationable plastic plants from GloFish so I have Zero Experience and I am just curious. (I would like to find out if they have parents who carry the gene for the gloproteine, or if they go through the hassle and insert it into all fishembryos?)

Hey there! I don’t use a special light, I have LED lights and they just look like that in normal light and under the LEDs. However, here’s a few pics of them under just the Blue LEDs, you can see they fluoresce (although it’s hard to take a picture of them like that)

The gene for these colors and fluorescence is in them, so any offspring they have will automatically have these colors and fluorescence. They were initially bred in laboratories, with the gene being tied to other, “invisible” genes so they can see what genes got passed to what offspring. Now they’re bred for the aquarium hobby. There’s only one catch - they are Trademarked, I believe? The thing is, no one is legally allowed to breed them, and especially to sell them, without a license from the GloFish people.

What a good baby ovo Just a stupid question out of curiosity, aren't those bars kinda uncomfortable to lie on? Or is it barebones because of her poopey episode? My dog had this patch of rough thick skin on his elbow cause he loved smashing himself on the floor tiles, so these bars might look uncomfy by human stamdards only? I never had a kennel so that's really just curiosity.

Hi!  Yes, super hormonal burbs have been a problem around here, too.  -_-  There are a few things you can try:

Make sure your bird gets 12-14 hours of darkness a day.  This will imitate the longer nights of winter, when most birds know instinctively that it is NOT a good time to start a family.  Your bird doesn’t have to be asleep the whole time, just in a covered cage or dark room.

Rearrange the contents of the cage on a weekly basis--you don’t have to swap everything out, but move it around.  This will let your bird know that the environment is not stable enough to raise a family at this time.  

Limit exposure to warm, moist foods that might mimic regurgitation, and limit access to any small, dark spaces that might resemble a good place to nest.  This might mean that you have to hang toys in the bottom corners of the cage to discourage nesting behavior (I have to do this for Beatrix every spring -_- ).

Limit access to mirrors, especially on toys inside the cage!  Your bird might mistake the bird in the mirror for a mate.

Try feeding your bird hemp seed (available at most health food stores).  Hemp seed can be kind of pricey, but you can just mix a little bit in with your bird’s normal food.  This worked pretty well with Horatio.

Discourage your bird from trying to flirt or mate with your fingers--you can just remove him or even put him on a little time out when he does this, especially if he tries to rub his butt on your hand, Horatio-style.  -_-

Bratwurst erasure. Auf Englisch ist es deutlich besser aber ich fand die Deutsche Übersetzung immer unterhaltsam.
