The School for Good and Evil
Can something be queer and yet homophobic? I don't know much about the author of this series, Soman Chainani, but I feel that in the first book Agatha was really into Sophie. At least she really liked pretty Sophie. When reading the book you think that Agatha was very into Sophie, but it turns out she was only jealous. By the time Agatha admits she wants to be beautiful she thinks she has blonde hair when leaving the Groom Room.
As for Sophie she clearly has the idea only princesses and princes can be together. She clearly wants to be a princess and have everything taken care for her by a sidekick or a prince. One of her favorite parts in the stories she reads is when a witch dies.
It really seems that if this book was made later, Agatha and Sophie would be in a queer relationship. Then book two comes out saying that it was a bad thing when Sophie and Agatha realized they didn't need boys to achieve their happy ending.
And to add even more BS after book 3 it's revealed that Agatha and Sophie are sisters which really fucks up any type of relationship they were building. We barely have any female friendships that are highlighted because in the first book it was all about Sophie and Agatha. Sure, Kiko was there with Agatha but Kiko and Agatha's relationship don't pass the Bechdal test.
Meanwhile, Sophie's bunkmates like Hester and Dot absolutely hate Sophie even when she's doing well. That's actually a plot point with Sophie's transformation into a witch in the first book and they lock her up.
The story is written in such a strange way that I feel that it's stuck in the past. Despite the fact Sophie becomes a leader of the school in several books and is very independent they give her a boy to be her love interest in book six.
