I feel like I need to give the progression of emotions I felt/thoughts I had about the glass coffin trap during my Saw IV and V watch last Saturday lmao
“Omg Hoffman and Strahm! Those are the gay middle aged men let’s gooooo”
“Wait, Hoffman’s been kidnapped and is a part of this Saw trap? But he and Strahm barely have interacted? And I know he gets involved in that coffin trap later? I guess he must survive this one”
I kinda knew/had the thought that Hoffman killed someone before so my guess was he killed a perp who got away or something
(And I mean…… that did get revealed to basically have happened in canon just NOT in the way I expected and also I didn’t even know Hoffman was an apprentice at this point)
But anyways, this murder would get revealed later, hence causing friction between him and Strahm down the line. Like I thought Strahm would find out about it during the Jigsaw investigation somehow but not be able to do anything about it legally because corrupt police department cover up, evidence destruction, etc. and then the two of them would be forced to keep working together to catch Jigsaw as tension built
Then the whole coffin trap would basically be “Hoffman, you enacted vigilante justice, now that’s gonna happen to you” or some shit. Idk what exactly Strahm would be being tested on in this scenario my brain hadn’t thought that far ahead lol all I knew was that the expected outcome from Jigsaw/his apprentice in this case was that self preservation would win and Strahm would lock himself in the box leaving Hoffman to die
BUT as much as Strahm may kinda hate the guy, he’s someone who’s not gonna kill another dude. So at first he would fight Hoffman and you’d think “oh shit yeah he’s gonna leave Hoffman to die!!” But he’s actually fighting him into submission to put him in the coffin and save him. And it’d be tragic as Hoffman tries to slam on the box and open it to let Strahm in there instead
(I had seen a couple of vague posts from you that were like “they both could have fit in the coffin” so without knowing anything about the movies at that point I was like “omg they both could have fit in the coffin DDD:” thinking it was meant to be a tragic “we can only pick one of us to save” situation lmaooo)
ANYWAYS when at the end of Saw IV it’s revealed that HOFFMAN was the apprentice I was like “ooooohhhhhh fuck” (loved that twist) and then my next thought was “how tf is the coffin thing gonna happen then?”
It became more and more apparent as I watched V that every assumption I had about the coffin scene was EXTREMELY off base
HOWEVER my dumbass still thought that Strahm shoving Hoffman in the coffin was gonna be an act of knowing sacrifice
My thinking ended up shifting to be that Jill would put Hoffman and Strahm in the coffin trap together and this would be a part of John’s final test to Hoffman as mentioned on the tape in IV. Like that’s what he left behind for her to do etc etc. It was a test meant to make Hoffman know what it felt like to take a life in the name of survival rather than to derive pleasure from it or because John told him to. This way he would finally understand and appreciate John’s methods. But then Strahm would give one last big “fuck you” to Jigsaw and refuse to play his game and save this apprentice who he objectively should wanted to kill in this moment
As the ending drew near I had absolutely no idea what was gonna happen until I realized that fucking Hoffman set all of that shit up, put himself in the trap knowing that Strahm would do exactly what he did, and got to be a cocky son of a bitch about it
Cue me losing my mind, much to the amusement of my friend
Anyways that was the emotional journey I was on for those movies lol this got kinda long but your tag on that post made me feel the need to share so that you can at least get a hint of what was going through my mind
thank you SO much for sharing this with me omg. omg???
I'm ENTHRALLED by the version you'd come up with, I can see the progression and it's! such a very saw plot to take! "a test meant to make Hoffman know what it felt like to take a life in the name of survival rather than to derive pleasure from it or because John told him to. This way he would finally understand and appreciate John’s methods." godDAMN i would have LOVED to see that happen!! it would have been such a good story beat! and Strahm's last actions being to sacrifice himself for this guy he's been hunting as a last fuck you to Jigsaw?? AHH
(I've said before but I only watched the films after memorising the wikipedia pages/numerous fanfics so I pretty much knew all the plot beats going on, so I LOVE seeing fresh reactions to these films! I missed out! if I'd known I was going to enjoy this franchise half as much-!)
