What Is The Best Kind Of Softwood?
Choosing a provider of lumber for wood turning projects requires knowing the difference between softwoods vs. hardwoods. Softwoods are easier to work with, and the cost is usually cheaper than hardwoods. There are many different types of softwoods available. This article provides information on how to choose softwood lumber for your project.
Eastern White Pine
Eastern White Pine comes in a wide range of shades of pale straw color. It is used extensively for cabinetry, flooring, and gunstocks. Eastern White Pine has a very straight grain, and it may be straightened with cross-grain right to the core. It is light in color but may have some darker knots or splinters.
Heart Pine
Heart Pine is an old-growth type of soft wood harvested primarily from the Pacific Northwest. The heart pine is also called Pinus sylvestris. It is a straight, dark grain and has a very straighter shape than most other soft woods. It is typically more expensive than other types of softwoods. It makes good unfinished floorboard material and is excellent for use in floors.
About Softwood Lumber
Lumber used for exterior trim, interior cabinet work, shelving, door and window trim, and moldings usually has been sawed, crosscut, or carved. The wood has been sanded and finished to make it smooth before it is turned into flooring, shelving, and other applications. This means the wood is very dense. It will hold up well against moisture and termites and has a uniform look with no visible knots. Knots may be minute, but it is still possible to see them even when the flooring is painted over.
There are many suppliers of this type of soft wood flooring that will cut the wood to your specific measurements and then install it for you. It is important to buy enough board to finish the project. You do not want to buy more board than you need to finish the project, as this defeats the purpose of buying the wood flooring in the first place. Some manufacturers of this type of wood flooring will ship the boards in sheets, so you do not have to purchase all your materials at one time. Bamboo hardwood flooring panels come in similar but more compact sizes than pine boards.
A lot of manufacturers use a variety of different names for their white pine lumber. They may call it Australian hardwood, Spanish pine, or even British pine. All these names are appropriate, but they all mean the same thing. If you are not sure what type of lumber is used, ask the Tropical Forest Products how the boards are measured. That will help you narrow your search and get the right kind of lumber for your project.
