enid was fourteen when the world ended. her parents danced around the possibility of making a run for a public ‘safe zone’, at first, but her father eventually came to the conclusion that the idea of such a place was a pipe dream. both he & her mom agreed that they were better off on their own. so instead, they bounced from place to place, hoping to find somewhere to hunker down for the long haul & essentially planned on ‘waiting it out’, unaware that things weren’t going to get any better. 

her parents were swarmed by a group of walkers on the side of the road (two months into the apocalypse) while trying to get their car to start. she spends the next eight months totally alone, in complete silence, forced to absorb this loss in absolute solitude. she learns to survive on her own, becoming quite an adept scavenger for food & shelter (though this was increasingly difficult in the winter months). she has her fifteenth birthday during this time.

eventually, she stumbles upon alexandria, & is taken in by the people who reside there. to put it lightly, she was in shock at this point. it takes enid three weeks to speak a single word to anyone after her arrival in alexandria. this isn’t hard to believe, when considering what trauma she’s undergone at such a young age, how long she spent alone, & so on.

at some point during the eight months she spends at alexandria before we meet her in season 5, she turns sixteen.

by the time we reach season 8, she’s already turned seventeen. she’s also moved from alexandria to hilltop.

it’s at this age, pre season 9 (at the beginning of the 18 month time jump) that she decides she wants to really contribute to the community. she trains under siddiq (turning eighteen mid 18 month time jump), & becomes hilltop’s doctor (officially) when rick decides it’s time to send siddiq home in one of the first few episodes of season 9 (directly post 18 month time jump).

and I’m like oh shit do I have to explain the Gender Thing. Do I have to start getting out my school ID card...
