Noccalula Falls Gadsden Alabama. An absolutely beautiful park in the middle of this gorgeous little town with a super cool namesake legend. The story goes that because of white settlers moving into the region, the two native tribes of cherokee and creek were forced onto the same land that caused warring on both sides. To create Peace the Cherokee chief promised his daughter Noccalula to the son of the creek chief. However Noccalula was already in love with a Cherokee brave and decided she would rather die than marry another. She threw herself from the top of the falls that used to be named “Black creek falls”. It was named for her afterward. Harpers Ferry was absolutely beautiful. For a town that’s basically been washed away by floods numerous times, changed hands 6 times during the civil war, seen slave rebellions, and then was basically forgotten about... it’s safe to say this historical and gorgeous town is a survivor. I’ve never really had a chance to walk around and nerd out at all the sites and sounds before so I was stoked to be able to learn some of the history here. Got to visit the Brushy Mountain Historical State Penitentiary today... and got a tour from a former inmate Wayne Davidson, who told us all kinds of gruesome stories from his time here. Then we got a private tour from a former Guard Teddy Basler; who walked us through the halls of his former Work place. D-Block the Maximum security block of the penitentiary. Teddy claims he is the only person with a full set of keys to the entire prison and his prized skeleton key that unlocks any cell he wants.
