I'm going to dig around for other interviews to see if there's a direct connection, but I'll point out my observation here: In Sweden, this form of applied fractal geometry is traditionally done using straw to make ornaments and wallhangings for the home. The craft is known as himmeli.

Across the road from my phrag patch, the water table is only held back from the road by a very slight rise. It is a beautiful spot at 8am. (Focus is wonky but) a phrag stem is very straw like. I broke off some sprouts to see how they hold up, they dried incredibly quickly.
