Hypnagogia
A couple of months ago, I joined the What Magic is This? Podcast with good friend and indirect mentor of all things occult, Douglas Batchelor. Hypnagogia is a liminal state, which means it exists “neither here, nor there”, and happens right before slipping into sleep. Most people have auditory, olfactory, or visual hallucinations, and while it is not typically supposed to hold a plot line, sometimes it can! That’s when the good stuff happens.
Across time, writers, artists, mystics, and inventors used this hypnagogic state to become inspired, to problem solve, and to divine!
Dreaming is my favorite thing, ever. I lucid dream fairly regularly, and this hypnagogic state is one of my favorite liminal states to be in. It takes some practice, but you can enter this deeply relaxing state, and do magic here! We talk more about it in this episode.

“There is a state that occurs right before one falls asleep that is perhaps one of the oddest and trippiest experiences one can have without the use of drugs. This is called Hypnagogia and it occurs every time we fall asleep. Our perceptions become very strange and we can experience many different sensations; sometimes amazing and sometimes terrifying. And yet this state has been utilized by inventors, artists, mystics and prophets to great effect. Joining WMiT? on this episode is friend of the show and fellow onieronaut, The Mad Sorceress Samantha Giacalone!”
