I decided I’d start this journal here because I’ve been feeling a little bit out of place lately. I’ve been going to school, then to work, and going home, like usual. It’s the same routine every day, but I never noticed just how mundane that routine is until now. I think most people are like me; content to follow the norm. We don’t seem to really understand why we do the things we do, we just do it because it’s normal; it’s what everyone else does. I’ve been wondering to myself whether or not I’m really happy with my life right now. I have friends, I get along with people, and I avoid trouble. There’s a police officer around my neighbourhood who always warns me to be careful of those weird kids with the coloured mohawks and spiked boots who hang out at the park. He’s really nice. Payday is also nice because then I can go and buy a bunch of clothes, music, and stuff. Something seems off about all of this though and I finally realize what it is. I’m stuck in a system. I’m a pawn in someone’s selfish plot to earn a whole lot of money.
I became kind of obsessed with this idea and I’ve been doing a lot of thinking on the way the government and the media subtly push us into a corner and force us to make decisions that’ll earn them profit. That’s capitalism for you. Everything has to be about money, doesn’t it? Being in the midst of the technological age, it’s easier for large companies to lure their customers into their stores than ever. TV always has the same generic, but attractive characters and wardrobes that viewers just HAVE to have. Anything and everything is being advertised. I can’t sleep without thinking of something I want to buy the next day and let me tell you, I’m sick of it. I thought I had more control over my decisions, but it turns out I don’t, and I NEED to change that. I can’t succumb to the pressures of the norm. I can’t be like everyone else. I need to stand out and help others realize that we shouldn’t be so content with feeding the capitalist system and throwing our money at the 1%. I’ve decided that I want to go against all of this. It’s kind of funny. I guess those weird kids at the park aren’t so bad after all.
