there are few things more frustrating than witnessing insufferable succession discourse born from people consuming media through the lens of “i will/you should like the character that is morally best and dislike the one that’s morally worst.” because not only is watching succession like that one of the least enjoyable experiences you could possibly subject yourself to, but it also results in some terribly shallow discussion of the characters. obviously.
under a serious analysis of roman, someone said that they liked him “until the dick pic thing” and that it was their “final straw.” which was insane to me (beyond the obvious angle of like, ‘i can excuse endorsing a fascist but i draw the line at dick pics’ ‘you can excuse endorsing a fascist??’). of course it’s understandable for your view of a character to shift for the worst, HOWEVER to me the nature of succession is that you should never refuse to ever sympathize with any given character again after a reprehensible action– that is to say, nothing should ever be your “final straw”– because what makes them such masterfully complex characters, and therefore fun to analyze, is their ability to do indefensible things one moment and be sympathetic in the next.
i suppose what i’m trying and failing to articulate here is that of course you can dislike a character because they’re immoral, sure. but that immorality shouldn’t prevent you from giving them the time of day to consider deeply. especially on a show like succession where the balance of your sympathy and condemnation of those character is precisely why they should be given the time of day to analyze. like that’s just not fun. anyways this post is nothing i’m just rambling
cross my heart

What is my perfect crime? I break into NBC at midnight. Do I go for the safe? No, I go for Glenn Howerton. He’s priceless. As I'm taking him down, a woman catches me. She tells me to stop. It's her father's business. She's Stephen Burke’s daughter. I say no. We make love all night. In the morning, the cops come and I escape in one of their uniforms. I tell her to meet me in Mexico, but I go to Canada. I don't trust her. Besides, I like the cold. Thirty years later, I get a postcard. I have a son and he's the chief of police. This is where the story gets interesting. I tell Stephen Burke’s daughter to meet me in Paris by the Trocadero. She's been waiting for me all these years. She's never taken another lover. I don't care. I don't show up. I go to Rob McElhenney’s basement. That's where I stashed Glenn.
i saw a few posts that mentioned the ishvalan campaign being kind of skimped over in brotherhood so i checked it out and god DAMN that was. just. where was it? i hate brotherhood
