there was definitely a lot of trial and error for this one, a got rid of a lot of ideas that i had because i felt like none of them were working until i started working on this. today is my 5th army anniversary, and for five years, at different stages of my life, this song has meant so much to me. i held it close to my heart when i entered and graduated high school, when i left my home and everything i knew and last summer when i was feeling like i had gotten stuck in a place in my life from which i would never be able to get out of.  i feel like it got a new meaning every time that i needed it, so i want to thank this song and the boys for being with me for 1/4 of my life already, for helping through all that life has thrown at me since 2017.

I finally finished making this plushy whale for myself! The fabric is stretchy and velvet nappy so it was very difficult and frustrating for me; sewing with stretchy stuff and velvety stuff in 3 dimensional shapes are three areas that I am not great at. (I’m great at quilting! Solid woven cotton nonstretchy fabrics that are FLAT.) He turned out very wonky, and I haven’t entirely forgiven him yet, so we’re spending a little time apart. I hope I’ll end up loving him eventually, after all the work I did.

He’s my whalien, named after the BTS song Whalien 52 about the one (real) whale in the Pacific Ocean that sings at 52hz, a sound frequency that no other whale uses or can hear. They use the whale that feels like an alien as a metaphor for loneliness in that song, but now in BTS lore, the whale has come to represent something happier like the understanding and love they share with their fandom - we’re not lonely whales anymore.
