part 6
kathy and webster floated to the surface together, as they did once every few days, to suck useless atmospheric oxygen into their useless whale lungs, enjoying the feeling of cool air flooding their blowholes, smelling the strange land-based life across the sea. Â they didn't typically stay surfaced long--kathy preferred the depths, and webster preferred a vantage point below kathy. Â this day was like no other in that respect, and kathy and webster, independently yet simultaneously, once again dove below the waves to resume their favored activities. Â kathy, as usual, kept her focus on the surface, awaiting sunrise, which regularly preceded sunset by several hours, kathy's favorite time of day. Â the night sky held no particular fascination in kathy, but something was different today. Â while kathy found moonlight unsatisfactory, in terms of its adequacy for setting the skin of her whale brethren aglow in a pleasing way, there was something marvelously pretty in the sky. Â long, white, bright, and burning brighter by the second. Â for the first time in her life, kathy marveled at something beyond the waves, indeed, from beyond her own galaxy, as this was a comet that had traveled many miles and was now crossing her planet's path in the most breathtakingly beautiful way.
webster took no notice of the comet, but he did take notice of a change in kathy, the whale with whom he had shared his entire life and whose identity was, thus far, inextricably wrapped up with his own. Â something was different in kathy. Â the shiny surface of her whale eyes was reflecting the burning light of the comet as it raced through the night sky, but for webster it was not beautiful. Â why was kathy, and, in turn, webster, suddenly different? Â webster hadn't done anything different. Â the world hadn't changed. Â why had webster? Â he had accepted his role in life as gazing upon his own visage and understanding himself, but now he realized he didn't understand himself at all. Â for the first time in his life, webster experienced a crisis of faith.Â
