I was forwarded this podcast on bigfoot and similar supernatural stories; this episode covers the bizarre story of the "Witch-Diggers," a family by the name of Bishler who were seized by a compulsion to dig, at war with witches in the earth in 1892. They were haunted by long armed women in white, monkeys with human faces, and bigfeet. The surviving members of the family were eventually institutionalized, though in one final gothic flourish, one of the sons became an ax-wielding, high-jumping, hair-covered wildman. I used this story in Whom Gods Would Destroy (Part I, p. 295-296), and found a connection these researchers didn't - the Bishlers were living right next to an alleged mound of giant bones in Jenning County.
