I don't know if you know this, but I love roller derby. A lot. I will always be a huge fan and advocate of Women's Flat Track Roller Derby whether I ever become a certified skater or not. That being said, about a year ago I attempted to skate and certify with a roller derby team. I lasted about 8 months before giving up. If I would have stuck with it, I probably would have certified within a few months but I let myself be beaten. I was overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by silly drama, by the intense practice schedule, working a full time job, feeling unfulfilled in life, but most of all because derby forced me to deal with myself. I have never been an athlete. I always felt like I couldn't be because I was too fat or too slow or just didn't have the natural talent it would take to be any good. I've since realized that all of this is nonsense and that deep down I'd made up my mind that there was no way I could  succeed. All the days spent crying over how slow and awful I was and thinking that my teammates were silently judging me for it were a direct result of unresolved body issues that I didn't even realize I had. At that time, I thought I was okay with myself. I thought I was happy with my body and who I am. That couldn't have been entirely true because I still felt like I had something to prove. I mistook my teammates yells of encouragement to keep going and keep pushing as expressions of disappointment or frustration. My biggest challenge during those first 8 months was getting past my own mental block.
