WFOT's Position Statement on Human Rights
I had the opportunity to read WFOTās position statement on Human rights. I was actually amazed that the occupational therapist had such a big position on human rights in relation to human occupation and participation. The article was mainly about the fact that people have the right to participate in different types of occupations.
Occupation is such a complex term. I often get asked by others to help them āchoose what they want to study in the futureā but no, an occupation is defined as āeveryday activitiesā that people do. This ranges from getting up in the mornings, to eating breakfast ,going to work and then getting back into bed at the end of the day. Itās pretty much everything in-between and including when you wake up in the mornings and go to bed in the evenings. āit includes the things people need to do, want to do and are expected to doā it is everything in one word and therefore can be so disabling when not fulfilled.
Occupational therapistā¦ what is even left after you remove the word āoccupationā from it? OTās have the responsibility to help support all different types of participation and to help people that experience such limitations that prevent them from participating in occupations. This is what we as OTās strive for in our practice each and every day. Itās from helping the child with no co- ordination to feed himself to teaching the woman with no legs, dress herself. I canāt imagine another profession that can be as rewarding at the end of the day.
Here in South Africa, we have such high rates of poverty and diseases. This is very alarming to an OT, as the article states that these are the people whose rights to occupations are threatened, so thatās pretty much most of South Africa. I feel that most of South Africa sees occupations as an opportunity to those who are in poverty and fighting diseases and not a Human Right, so as the article rightly says, the OT is here to make this right known to others. We have to limit the impact of these āinjustices that are experienced by these individualsā
My definition of Occupation includes āhelping a person get their life backā after all, what is life without activities and occupations? It is the basis of life and OTās help you put your dancing shoes on and allows you to dance the night away.Ā
World Federation of Occupational Therapists
The World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT) is the official representative of occupational therapists around the world. They promote international cooperation among OT associations and occupational therapists. They also advance the practice and standards of OT. In 2006 the WFOT published a paper regarding their position on human rights in relation to human occupation and participation. According to WFOT, "occupations refer to everyday activities that people do as individuals, families and with communities to occupy time and bring meaning and purpose to life. Occupations include things people need to, want to and are expected to do". Seven rights / principles were established regarding humans and their occupations in this paper. This included the right to participate in a range of occupations and be supported in it, as well as the right to choose the occupation for yourself. Numerous factors can inhibit or abuse this such as economic, social or physical barriers, including poverty, disease and man-made disaster. The OTs job is therefore to support the person experiencing the limitations and to facilitate them in being able to engage in the occupation of their choice. By working together with other members of a multidisciplinary team as well as the patient/ client and members involved, the OT will be able to overcome barriers and limitations to function in occupations. It is the OTs responsibility to identify the injustices and limit their impact experienced by the individual, as well as raising awareness and working in collaboration with individuals, organisations, societies and communities to promote participation of meaningful occupation. Cultural beliefs play a major role in deciding on an occupation for most individuals, therefore it is also the OTs role to consider and address the issue of cultural sensitivity. This article was informative and is a good read for any OT or OT student as it highlights the importance of occupational therapy and the roles OTs play in a client's life.
